The grottoes form an impressive ensemble and the largest of the 100 000 or so buddhas, at 17 meters high, is amazing. Yet, I would rather recommend visiting the grottoes in Datong,

The grottoes were very scenic with the rivers, bridges and surrounding mountains. The giant buddha statues were very elegant and commanding. The view from the opposite side was breathtaking.

We visited the grottoes on a self-made tour including Shaolin Temple in the morning and Longmen in the afternoon. Unfortunately there was no official direct transprtation between the two sites, so we had to hire a taxi. The drivers are extremely dishonest there. We bargained for a price, but in the end they asked for another. We went very close to a fight because of a number of these incidents and in the end we had to settle for a 200 RMB ride which we shared with another couple (so the price was 50 RMB each, still extremely unfair).

There are tons of people visiting the grottoes every day, try to avoid weekends and national holidays. Most of the carvings and statutes are well preserved, although there are some damages. Nice visit overall. Don't miss the ticket office on the right side or you'll have to walk a long way back from the site entrance. The fee is 120 RMB (a bit too high).

For going back to Luoyang city centre, take bus 81.

Walking around there is almost like hiking, so wear good shoes. The grottoes were really nice and it is all very impressive.
