“Great location, poor service”
Reviewed May 1, 2012

The location of the Hotel is absolutely incredible... from the terrace on the 4th floor (building 5), you have an amazing view on the main attraction of Luoyang: the Longmen grottoes. And the Hotel is in walking distance from the grottoes as well as one of the nature parks in the area and a temple.

If you plan to use your stay in Luoyang mainly to examine the ancient site of Longmen grottoes then this Hotel will be hard to beat. However if you want to explore the area and stay for a few days, then this Hotel is remote (it will take you a good half an hour to get to the old town or 45 minutes to the white horse temple - that is if you can get a taxi to come up to the Hotel, due to its proximity to the grottoes, often the road is blocked and you have to get quite far down the road to find a taxi).

When it comes to the rest: the view and proximity to the Longmen grottoes is the only 5 star aspect about this Hotel. The rooms are ok but the bathroom is very small, the rooms look outdated, no safe in the room and the mini-bar was empty (despite a price list, redundant information). On day 1 we entered the breakfast room at 9:15 am (breakfast is served until 9:30) which turned out to be a big mistake: apparently the staff wants to leave at 9:30 instead of stopping service at that time. The buffet was almost empty and the staff was busy cleaning up. Day 2 was much better but we got there at 7:30am.

We were most disappointed though with how little of help the staff was in case of questions relating to anything else than the grottoes: the staff was not able to tell us how to get to Shaolin temple (the other main attraction of the area) or what to do there, to get us a taxi to come to the Hotel, to pick us up from down the hill after a visit to the grottoes despite earlier assurances or to inform us of reasonable prices of taxi rides to town or other attractions.

Luoyang and Shaolin have a lot to offer: the grottoes, shaolin temple, white horse temple, old town, mudan flowers if you come in the right season etc. Just be careful with taxi drivers and ask them to use the meter or agree on a price upfront to avoid unpleasant surprises.

This resort is mainly a government retreat. The property is beautifully maintained, tranquil, peaceful and located 5 minutes from the Longmen Grottos. This was our last spot after 30 days and we were looking forward to a relaxing stay. The rooms were immaculate and nicely appointed, BUT the beds were hard as rocks. We had seen reviews for hard beds, but this was our first experience. We hardly slept our 2 nights there. Although internet was free, it was either very very slow or very very censored at this government retreat.

The other problem for us was eating. You are far from any place to eat and the only restaurant in the asian buffet. One day there was no coffee, the next an old pot sitting coldly on a table. We love asian food, but it was mostly local and without description. We had a diffucult time have a satisfying meal with both our breakfasts and dinners here.

Although the staff was polite, no one really spoke any English. We did a lot of pointing and charades.

Liked: The quiet, natural, resort and close to the Grotto - location

Disliked: The hard bed and limited food choice.

Based on the tripadvisor reviews we booked two nights at this hotel. We were traveling with our three children ages, 6, 8 and 10, and my in-laws (in their 70s).

We had a reservation, and called the day of to confirm. We were told that our three rooms had been reduced to two, but other than that, everything was okay.

We drove up to the hotel and found it blocked by a police car. Big black cars were driving up to the hotel, but our cab was not allowed up. We were told that the hotel was closed. I figured we would have to wait until the VIPs checked in, but as time passed we were repeatedly told that the hotel was closed. I pulled out our reservation and showed it to the officer. Finally, because we refused to leave, someone from the hotel came down. We were sitting on the side of the road. The hotel said that we would have to leave, they would not help us find another hotel and that all the rooms had been given to the government. The woman did let us use her cell phone to call Sino Travel who found us other rooms (but not in a great location and not one with a pool).

We had crying kids, no water was offered (Henan is hot in the summer) and they made us wait by the side of the road for an hour and a half! We were not even allowed into the hotel to get this worked out. The hotel did offer the hotel van to take us to the next hotel, which was good since the cabs charged us three times the going rate to get us from the train station to the hotel, plus a "waiting fee."

I have never not had a reservation honored and I have traveled to more than 40 countries.

The Hotel is more of a resort. You can not book rooms thru the internet as it shows always full. It is better to call them (they speak only chinese) and make a booking in advance as it is accross the river from Longman Grettos. It has the best night view of Longman Grettos from the bar on the 4th floor of this hotel (buildin # 5). The bar is open from 11:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. Longman Grettos are lighted in the evening from about 6:00 p.m. till 10:30 p.m.

The rooms are very nice. The bed is huge (twice the size of a king bed).

There are two chinese restaurants in the hotel/resort complex) with decent chinese food but they have no view.

They also have a recreational centre - Snooker, Table Tennis, Swimming Pool, Message centre.

This hotel turned out to be an excellent choice! We were nervous since there weren't any trip advisor reviews, but there was no need. The hotel was a beautiful complex of buildings at the top of a hill. Location-wise, it's a bit remote, so plan on doing all of your eating up at the hotel unless you want to hop in a taxi cab. For us and for the point we were at in our trip, it was ideal. We had a gorgeous view of the famous Longmen Grottoes. We'd booked a Hot Springs Suite thinking it meant there was a hot spring bath in the room, but that was really just the same of the room. The suite was utterly gorgeous and they even gave us some fruit and flowers as a free gift when we arrived. Everything was spotlessly clean. We had a TV in the living room, bedroom and bathroom--unfortunately, not much English on TV, though, so we didn't watch much (which was just as well, honestly). Since it's the off season, a lot of things were closed so we had only one restaurant option available in the complex--not a big deal. Service was great and the waitstaff were TOO attentive. The translations on the menu were really funny, so the photos came in handy. The staff was really kind, too, because when we were ordering they told us we'd picked a lot of food, so we cut back on an item. It's hard to tell since China portions can be so large. It was nice of them not to try to just make more money off of us. The breakfast was good--we were the only ones in the dining room. It wasn't particularly noteworthy on any counts. The hotel also had a good heat system, which was a nice change for us since traveling in the winter in China is COLD. I would go back to this hotel in an instant. It was soooo relaxing and enjoyable.
