“Good value hotel, excellent riverside location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2009

We stayed in the Riverview Hotel for a few days in May. We found the hotel just by walking around and checking different places - this one looked the best. It is located in a superb position, just minutes from the action yet far enough away from West Street that you don't have to to contend with the noisy night clubs. In addition, it is located right on the river with great views of the surrounding karst from some balconies.

The room was of average size, bright, very clean and well maintained, AC, TV (Chinese) and bathroom with enclosed shower with great hot water! Unfortunately, no mini-fridge. Our 3rd storey room had a nice balcony with great river/karst views. The only thing we disliked about the room was that there was a lot of hallway noise - people talking, doors slamming, etc. - at times, but it wasn't too bad and we still managed to get good sleeps.

Downstairs the restaurant was very affordable, not a rip-off like some hotels, with a good variety of western cuisine. The breakfasts were great here. A big bonus was the 2 free internet computers in the lobby. Bike rentals just outside the door.

Staff were semi-attentive and generally friendly. Occasionally they had to be woken up or pried away from the free internet computers when we needed something.

Overall, the place was a great value riverside hotel for only 180RMB, and it would be the first place we'd go to if we went back. We would definitely recommend it to other travellers.

The River View Grand Hotel is situated on the banks of the River Li in Yangshuo, China and we stayed ten nights.

As ever, feel free to contact us directly for further questions or check out our Blog (www.ktelontour.blogspot.com) for more on the accommodation, including pictures and what we’ve done in the area or just to relieve the boredom in the office…maybe.

ARRIVAL/TRANSFER:

We travelled from Guilin and preferred to take a cruise down the river which gave us two options. With an English speaking guide it will cost you RMB 495 per person, but the exact same cruise, only with a Chinese commentary is half price, at RMB 245 per head.

The ticket includes a coach transfer from your hotel to the harbour (about an hour) where the guide explains all the interesting stuff along the way, but is no help to you if you've gone for the cheaper option (as we did) and can't speak Chinese. The local tour was still fun thouigh and there is no guide on the boat, so you just interact with Chinese folk who were all ever so friendly and kind.

The cruise itself takes a couple of hours, includes lunch (plus an optional a la carte menu is also available) and you will see some amazing scenery as you meander slowly along the dirty, but vibrant working river. The hills and peaks are also very impressive if you get decent weather. Quite honestly it’s not as good as we had hoped for as the facilities are limited on board and it’s all a bit hit and miss and hotch potch.

However, instead of the cruise, you can catch the bus, as we did on the return leg. It takes less than a couple of hours and costs a trifling RMB 15 a person, one way. A BIG saving and worth it as you can see the scenery on the River Li by taking a local boat trip for much cheaper.

The buses leave almost every 15 minutes (the bus station is only a short walk from West Street) to Guilin and you just jump on the first in the queue. Departure time is not entirely exact as you wait until the bus fills or trawl for passengers along the main road, but once full it took us only an hour and a half and we even had a HDD film to watch. All for £1.50.

There are approximately RMB (Renimbi) or CNY (Yuan) 10 to the English pound. The Chinese currency is called either.

SURROUNDING AREA:

You're right near to the river, the mountains are clearly visible nearby and a short stroll away you have all the shops, bars, banks and restaurants of the main tourist drag on West Street.

Plenty of accommodation available if you prefer to turn up on spec and want to haggle a price on the night which is a good option as you can see before you accept and also decide on where you want to be.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

Liked the hotel from the outside and its location from the harbour, down by the river banks. Although the website images are clearly out of date and perhaps “enhanced”, it looked fine. Checking in was simple- just hand over your passport and pay up front (usual practice in China but there is no deposit required here) for your stay.

Our first room was not what we had requested; it had a mini bath and shower combination and we wanted a walk in, separate shower as shown on the website. And it wasn’t the cleanest of bathrooms either. Although the receptionist came across as grumpy, she did eventually give us another (slightly smaller) room with a good, cubical shower which was also far cleaner so we were happy.

THE ROOM(S):

Large and airy, with decent beds and comfortable duvets and two pillows each.

Plug in ADSL internet connection (request cable on checking in), cable TV with over 50 channels but all in Chinese except CCTV 9 which is the English speaking news channel also offering sports updates and the odd, interesting documentary, which were all on China and rather good.

Sturdy desk for the computer, plenty of storage space but most of it was a bit musty and looked as if it was rarely used. Air con kept us both warm (colder weather as we arrived) and then cooled us down as the temperature steadily rose over the week.

Bedside cabinets, both sides had reading lamps and the curtains kept the early morning light at bay quite comfortably.

Lots of hot water most of the time and if not, you let it run and it will warm up soon enough. There were two power points in the bathroom and ample space for your toiletries.

We had chosen the next room up from basic as it offered a balcony and supposedly a view of the river. It would have, if the trees weren’t so tall, but it was pleasant nonetheless.

No fridge but a kettle is provided.

UPS:

- Space
- Plenty of TV channels but all in local dialect
- Great internet connection and useful desk for the laptop (slightly low to get legs under comfortably but it worked OK)
- Good air con
- Loads of room for storage
- Comfortable beds and duvets
- Good toilet and water pressure for the sink
- Excellent location, everything is close to hand
- 2 x free computers in the Reception area- if you can get staff off them

DOWNS:

- No fridge
- No safe
- Poor quality towels; a bit threadbare
- Noisy on the street when the markets set up early in the morning
- Dated décor and feel
- Reception staff a bit glum and moody
- Could be cleaner

BREAKFAST:

Not included.

COMMENTS:

It sounds a lot grander on the website but it’s really a bit tired and worn out. The room wasn’t dirty but it looked shabby and the first bathroom was grimy- tile sealant had become discoloured and looked probably worse than it actually was.

That said, everything worked well and we had all we needed, particularly a quite brilliant and fault free internet connection, which has to be a first. No complaints there.

Beds were good, the lights were fine (bathroom was well illuminated for shaving/make up) and it was totally secure with solid doors and locks.

We were just around the corner from the action and all the shops, bars and restaurants, so the location was ideal. We paid less than £18 per night which really is good value, but it could have been even cheaper if you forgo the “river view” option.

Although we experienced mostly indifference from the reception staff who seemed more interested in playing on the computers than in saying hello/good bye, they were helpful if we asked for direct assistance and were entirely adequate.

FINAL IMPRESSIONS:

More than average, comfortable but not top of the range. Good price for solid accommodation and it has all facilities one could wish for the longer stay.

As a final comment, I’d suggest Yangshuo is certainly worth a visit if you like mountains and lakes and associated sports such as climbing, rafting, cycling or even painting or photography, but I’d only suggest a long weekend if it’s break from the city that you want.

Ten days was too long for us in the end and half that would have been sufficient, but we have time on our side and so it was hardly a chore trying new places to eat and drink.

Missed our flight and went back to Yangshou. Our local guide introduced us to River View Hotel. Compared to the initial hotel we stayed in Yangshou, River View Hotel was a gem!!!

We only paid RMB175 / nite . It was so cheap! What we got in return was a really spacious room, toilet and balcony. The view from the balcony was fantastic. We were facing the Li River. Furhter, the location was great. West Street was just across the street (merely 5 min of walk) . Unlike hotels in West street itself where it gets pretty busy n noisy, although River View Hotel is closed, but its really peaceful n quiet .

We really enjoyed our stay there.

  • Liked — The room and balcony was spacious!
  • Disliked — The heater is not hot enough

This place was OK but not somewhere I would go back to. Fine if you are just using it as a base and don't plan to spend much time here other than sleeping. We stayed in a double deluxe river view. 'Deluxe' is definitely a step too far and we couldn't see the river for the trees but in fairness it was pretty cheap.

I would like to echo pretty much everything the previous reviewer said, ursula13. Great location, room size decent, nice balcony facing river (w trees in the way), bathroom a bit grimey and dark.

Bring your own slippers and toiletries, the ones here are quite bad.

But the room itself wasn't TOO bad. Got a triple room for 230 RMB which I think is a steal. Booked a taxi from Airport for pickup for 250 RMB 1 hr 45 mins, yikes. Taxi driver picked us up, but she though I was a white american guy so it was a little hard to find the driver when I arrived since I'm chinese, she wasn't looking for me.

Location was excellent right next the end of West Street and quiet at night. I myself though West St was too touristy and preferred the smaller streets leading to West St. Room had heat and A/C unit too which is good. TV had many chinese channels, none english. CCTV9 sometimes has english programming.

Booked impression show tix at hotel, 188 RMB incl the bus shuttle. I don't think you can even get these tickets at the show, everyone was part of some group. Show was something else, very different. I'd recommend it, don't waste your extra money on the better seats unless. It's only 1 hr anyway.

Rented bikes at the hotel, 10 RMB and 20 RMB for mountain bikes. Get the mountain bikes...biking around Yangshuo is quite fantastic and not too hilly. Beware a washed out bridge over the dragon river, they make you pay to cross on a raft. Chinese scams. This is by the giggling smile hostel. Explains why the road leading to the 'missing' bridge was so nice and smooth.

Also, took a bus from the bus station to XingPing on a bamboo raft ride to Yandi, amazing scenery, must do. Neg 150 RMB for 1 boat, 3 ppl, 2 hr ride. Probably better than Yandi to Xingping, cuz that way you're with the current and goes a bit fast.

Booked taxi to Guilin for 200 RMB at hotel too. All in all, they were able to fulfill all our requests and needs within what I thought to be a reasonable price. Didn't feel gyped at all and was sufficient for 2 nights. Btw, they have fast free internet terminals.

The location of the River View Hotel was fantastic. Right on the River, great views, near the outdoor markets, and a close walk to West Street. We had a deluxe twin room with a view. I found the staff somewhat helpful, but not overly eager to go out of their way for us though. When we booked the hotel with Xie at the hotel ([-]), I also requested that he reserve seats for us for the Illusions show. I highly recommend doing this, it was the highlight of our trip. We got the 238RMB seats and this included transportation. It was great. You should also take a bamboo raft down the Li River starting from Yangdi and ending in Xinping (or if you feel like it, all the way down to Yangshuo). It was raining so we hired a private covered boat and went up the river from Yangshuo to Xinping (I do not recommend doing this). Also rent bikes and check out Moon Hill.

The lighting in the hotel room was not so great, but hopefully you won't be in the room much anyways. We were because it was raining for most of our stay. There are no English channels on the TV at all. The only real downfall to the hotel were the bathrooms. They smelled a little funny and the lighting was really terrible. I would not stay at this hotel again just because of the bathrooms. If you don't care about the cleanliness of bathrooms, then this is probably the best hotel you can find. Be sure to check out the coffee shop next door, they have a great breakfast!

We just came back from a 2 night stay at this hotel. Booked the family room which we thought was quite spacious. Had some initial problem with a leaky pipe which then turned into a burst pipe but that was quickly fixed. Ordered dinner one night which we thought was good value for money. Good location in terms of markets and West Street. A little noisy in the mornings though but hey, you won't then need a wake up call!

Our only complaint is we didn't find the staff particularly helpful. The staff were all young and only one of them, a female staff, was able to speak a decent amount of English. There was a young, male staff who was always around but everytime we tried asking him something, he simply mumbled 'no English' and then ignored us. There was no attempt to try and find out what we wanted which we thought was very unhelpful of him.
