We stayed here in July/August after spending nearly 3 weeks travelling in China. It was the perfect place to relax. We booked 2 rooms for our family of 5; the family room looked out onto the gardens and the river at the front. Beautiful!
The staff – by the reception, restaurant and housekeeping - was very friendly and helpful. Most spoke good English. Service was top-notch. We really enjoyed the food and drinks in the restaurant. You can book excursions through reception (e.g., bamboo rafting that goes past the hotel) or they can provide you with information for self-organised trips (e.g. catching the local bus to Yangdi and taking a motorised raft on the Li River).

Mountain Retreat is set in a peaceful location which means that you have to have some form of transport if you want to go anywhere (taxi, bike, scooter). But this is a small price to pay for the relaxing setting.
Highly recommended.

Dear Howie,
We're grateful for your kind review which is also very helpful for future guests. Our location on the Yulong River is unique and tranquil, which means cars cannot drive in and the hotel can either organize a shuttle or guests can use bikes and electric scooters. By bike, there is a lot to do in nearby villages, such as riding along the Yulong River directly from our parking area and exploring caves, sport climbing, bamboo rafting and hiking. Many guests will go by bike for lunch at Luna on the rooftop of our sister hotel Yangshuo Village Inn, overlooking Moon Hill. The ride is only 20 minutes and follows quiet back roads through amazing village scenery. Luna is known as one of the best restaurants in Yangshuo.
Thank you again for your helpful feedback, especially for your praise of our wonderful people, facilities and food.
Yours faithfully,
Little Fish and Yangshuo Mountain Retreat family

Not sure what to think. Extremely relaxing location and spectacular setting. Quite rustic and rough around the edges. But, the air conditioning cools the little room well. The bed, while feeling like no mattress, slept great. Internet is weak. No English tv, I think. Food is okay, and to order, not the endless wasting buffet in most other hotels. Would actually prefer newer western hotel in that all day you're faced with China's evolving upgrading of basic amenities, i.e. lack of toilets. So just be aware this is an isolated place, and low end finish, but mostly okay.

Dear Friends,
Although we have been a favorite of western travelers for the past 16 years, the reasons are mainly because we don't follow the new western hotel model, and instead offer an authentic China experience that as you mentioned, is exceptionally clean, comfortable and environmentally responsible.
As you were pleasantly surprised, your mattress was not an industrial hotel mattress, but made from traditional raw cotton batting, much like a futon, with a pillow top. Instead of factory made furniture, we make our own from bamboo cut on the property or use traditional designs also made by our local carpenter. Our newest Riverside Luxury Suite is a good example of this. As we do have a lot of Chinese antique furnishings and artwork, it will naturally be rustic, imperfect and decidedly not new or western.
We're glad you appreciated our a la carte breakfast, which as you pointed out, cuts down dramatically on food waste. Our commitment to our founding concept as an eco-lodge means things like television, swimming pools, disposable amenities and buffets are just not what we are about.
We have noted your comment about the WiFi, which if sitting in our gardens or on the balcony overlooking the river, may not be very strong, though we are pleased to be the only hotel in the area to offer free access to Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter via our encrypted network.
While we are a retreat, we are just 15 minutes from the town, and a short bicycle ride from caves, bamboo rafting, hiking trails, other hotels, bustling villages with restaurants and shops. We find that most guests are happy to be isolated from overpriced tourist shops, blaring music, traffic, and fast food. Our commitment to localism means an authentic experience that is different than a global chain hotel. We understand that for some guests, this takes some getting used to, and we thank you for seeing the positive side of what we offer as a local business.
Safe journey,
Little Fish and the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat Family

We arrived early and were treated to a free breakfast while we waited for our room to be made ready, which was good. The room was pleasant, a reasonable size with a terrace overlooking the river. As with many of the rooms in which we stared in China, the bathroom was only partially separated from the rest of the room, the basin in the room and shower & toilet in separate cubicles.

The gardens at the front of the hotel were a nice place to sit and watch the hundreds-upon-hundreds of river rafts float by; the river was very busy!

One could borrow bicycles and ride for some miles around the countryside; we went all the way to the Dragon Bridge and back, getting a little lost in the countryside, but having a lovely time and seeing a little of real rural China. We also cycled to Moon mountain; we got there OK, but got very lost trying to find our way back! It's probably easier to come back via the main road to avoid getting lost. The hotel provides hand-drawn maps, but they're not very good unfortunately.

For a short river raft trip, one could walk to the setting off point in less than 30 minutes, and back from the drop-off point in less than 15.

Though the hotel is a little away from Yangshuo, it is near to plenty of places to eat in the area around the river crossing a short way down-stream.

It was quiet and had a small bar. They served evening meals too.

Dear Madam,
We appreciate your comprehensive review of your stay with us, especially the bicycle trip. We are working to improve our maps this Winter using GPS, which will be easier to find the remote trails and narrow lanes. Thank you for reminding us about this!
Your note about seeing the real rural China is a big part of what the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat is about; providing authentic local experiences while offering western comforts and dining options. Thank you so much for sharing your great experience with us for others to follow.
Warm regards,
Little Fish and the Mountain Retreat Family

Our family visited Yangshuo in Sep 2017. We stayed at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat Hotel. This is a boutique hotel just beside the Yulong River.

The hotel features clean rooms, friendly staff and a high standard of hospitality. High speed wifi comes free. They practice environmental conservation.

Things to do in Yangshuo :

1. Bamboo rafting down the Yulong River. This is a must! You will be greeted by picturesque Karst Mountain landscape and lovely River views along the way. Bamboo rafts are a means of transport in the old days and even today. There are 2 trip options: 30 mins and 60 mins. For the adventurous, you can ask the boatman to let you try rowing the raft - I did, and it was a great experience. Life vests are provided and it's generally safe. Wear shorts and slippers - you will get a little wet when the raft goes down the mini rapids.

2. Impressions - Liu San Jie, the night show by Acclaimed Chinese director, Zhang Yimou. It's an open air show, performed live, by 600 performers - all from the nearby villages. The B1, B2 tickets are fine, no need to splurge on the most expensive seats. The tickets are priced at RMB 230 and 300 but the tour guides will normally levy a service fee as they need to ferry you to the venue and escort you in/out of the cavernous venue, which is set beside the Yu River and Karst hills (as backdrop). There are two shows per night - 8 pm and 9.30 pm, each show lasting 70 mins.

3. Cycling in the countryside. It's the best way to explore the beauty & nature of the rural country side. Single and tandem bikes are available for rental and for families, they offer a Cycling carriage that seats 4-6 pax. Dress lightly in the summer, wear hats and sunnies for protection.

4. For the more avid sporting folk, there are lots of walking / hiking trails in the nearby mountains and rock climbing is also popular here.

Yangshuo is good for 2-3 days, and most people arrive via the Li River cruise from Guilin. There are several ancient towns dotting the Li River - consider visiting these if you have time for a real taste of Chinese lifestyle years back.

From Yangshuo, there are also nearby places to explore further.

We totally enjoyed our stay in Yangshuo and only wish we had booked a longer stay!

The hotel was great. Great view from the room. Service was in top. The food was great and the surroundings was amazing.
The only mistake is, that we didn't stay longer.
There was not allowed any taxis and cars from outside the area inside, but they got a taxi to pick us up and drive us at some very small roads to get there.
They gave us bikes for free, because of the no car thing. So we had a great day on bikes in the countryside.
We also went swimming in the river just outside the hotel.
Food was really good, and I would recommend people trying the catfish
There are small roads that you can bike at and also things to see in the nearby area.
Almost all staff spoke English.

Dear Rasmus,
When we have such experienced travelers such as yourself as part of our community, we know we have to be perfect to meet your expectations. Your praise for everything we do means so much to us, and encourages us to keep doing our very best.
As you mentioned, the local government has been experimenting with restricting car access to the Yulong River Scenic Area, where Mountain Retreat is at the heart. This is a good thing for our overall peace and quiet, but requires us to offer alternatives to the usual taxi ride, so we will continue to improve our transportation options as the government plan evolves. We're glad you liked our complimentary bikes and 'creative' back road drives through the village.
All the best to you and your family wherever your travels take you,
Little Fish and the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat family
