“Great retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2013 via mobile

My family and I spent a couple of nights there to rest, recharge our batteries and enjoy the beautiful yangshuo country side. Our stay was very relaxing we even had a few massages provided by the hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms have a gorgeous view on the mountains, mornings from the balcony are just magic.

We arrived to the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat in the evening, after a day of hiking on the Dragon Back Rice Terraces. This area is a gorgeous part of China! What a treat to check in with a greeting of "would you like your complimentary welcome drink inside or riverside?" We chose to sit by the river as the view was incredible! We were served juice and treats, while we soaked in the amazing view.

Our room was clean and comfortable, great bamboo beds, with a stunning view from the second floor, river-facing balcony. Loved the view from the balcony, especially in the early morning or late evening with the reflections of the mountains and clouds in the stillness of the river! We had the pleasure of staying here two nights. Everything about our stay was pleasant and enjoyable. I really appreciated their commitment to being stewards for the environment. Really a great feeling to this place. Charming and comfortable with stunning scenery from most areas of the retreat.

The breakfasts were delicious, and somehow it was just was so good to order the fresh fruit plate and a fruit shake to cool off from the humidity upon returning from an adventure. My 18 year-old son's favorite was the apple shake! So good!

It was so nice to be off the beaten track, but still not too far from anything we wanted to do. We walked to Moon Hill late one afternoon, such a pretty walk along the road with the karst formations towering beside the road and well worth the effort to climb to top of Moon Hill. We hit it at sunset, truly beautiful scenery.

We arranged the Li River cruise and also the bamboo rafts through YMR. We enjoyed both very much. So nice to have the comparison as the karst scenery is more stunning on the Li River, but the bamboo raft trip was more serene, and we loved seeing the reflections of the mountains in the stillness of the YuLong River. Plus, it was nice to disembark right at the hotel's dock at the end of the bamboo raft trip! We had originally planned to take the Li River Cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, but decided to spend that day at the Dragon Back Rice Terraces instead and then do the two river trips on our first day in Yangshou. I'm so glad we did this. It turns out the day hiking on the rice terraces was my favorite day of our three week trip! The rice terraces were truly amazing, and we didn't miss out on the river trips as YMR arranged for the Li River cruise from the resort. We did that on our first morning in Yangshou and then the two-hour bamboo raft trip in the afternoon. It worked out beautifully.

All in all, this is a region of China I would love to return to, and if so, would definitely stay again at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat.

Room Tip: Stunning views from the second floor river facing rooms.

After the frantic pace of Beijing and Xi'an we headed to Guilin, out itinerary included a night in neighboring Yangshuo. We travelled to Guilin via the River Li. When we were heading towards the retreat the view was getting prettier and prettier. The retreat was a little different to what I was expecting, in that we had been staying at large 41/2 / 5 star hotels. What a beautiful surprise, ok the bathrooms are simple but how long does one spend in the bathroom????if anything the shower head was the best of all the hotels) Then we walked out onto our balcony, the view is the best I have EVER seen ( and I've travelled Europe) this place is heaven, I sat there for a couple of hours just reading and watching the rafting and view, I was so distracted by the ambience that when I went to go rafting it was too late. So my tip....go rafting. It looked like alot of fun. This place was quiet and restful, I would have loved another night. It was very hot and humid but the aircon in the rooms is very effective. Breakfast the next day, yum!

First a bit about us - mid-thirties couple with a love of independent travel and a dash of adventure. We're not fans of the flash chains or looking for five star luxury, we're always on the lookout for charming, interesting and one-off types of accommodation.

Yangshuo Mountain Retreat didn't disappoint us in this regard. A beautiful spot and exceptionally chilled out in the early morning and evening - super relaxing. We had absolutely no complaints about the room - we were in 101B, downstairs in a newly refurbished block. The room was big, well appointed and with a lovely big shower. It was clean and staff were super-helpful. Loved the bamboo furniture...

My only slight whinge about the Retreat was that the food was a bit wonky. Not bad, but not great either. However, they have a cracking selection of Belgian Beers, so there was an upside. The road out front gets a bit busy during the day, so I did feel at first as though the resort wasn't as remote as I'd hoped, but it turned out it was just traffic for the bamboo rafting during the daytime.

We hired scooters and a local guide to explore the area. The local guide made our holiday for us - he really understood the type of experience we were after - off the beaten track and away from the coach tours. Get in touch with Peter (Xu Xiao) Di in advance to book him up for any kind of tailor made tour - xuxiaodi1975@yahoo.com.cn - we can't rave about him enough.

We visited the Tea Cozy for a coffee and whilst we wouldn't have regretted staying there either, you go a long way to beat the experience of hanging out by the river with a cold Duvel in hand. There are things they can do better, but overall a big thumbs up from us.

While the setting and views are indeed lovely, I found the hotel itself disappointing given the website and reviews on here. It's not that it's awful....it's very relaxing...it's just that there are better options from what I can tell. My main complaint is the bathroom....fine but not updated and a little dirty. In addition the staff was somewhat helpful but not particularly friendly.

I had dinner at Tea Cozy and wished I had stayed there instead. Beautifully appointed rooms, amazing food, and simply wonderful staff. When I emailed to say I'd like to come to dinner Richard (one of the owners) called ahead to let Amy (the staffer on duty) know, so she was waiting for me. She was so sweet, spoke excellent English, and refused to take a tip when I tried to offer it at the end of the night. Just left you with a great feeling....whereas at the mountain retreat I felt like I was putting the staff out by asking questions.

If you prefer more luxurious and less B&B I'd suggest the Yangshuo Resort. Not exactly a Four Seasons but closer than not....gorgeous layout, setting and pool.

We're sorry to hear we didn't meet your expectations during your visit. For the past 13 years we have always been a rustic ecolodge, with simple but clean and comfortable accommodation. We do renovate our rooms every winter and maintain our bathrooms especially with care. Yes, there are plenty of newer hotels with fancier facilities and higher prices. It's interesting that you have mentioned the rooms at two nearby hotels without actually having stayed in either of them, so it's difficult to judge the quality of places with just a walk around the grounds or dinner in the restaurant.
Again, we are sorry to have disappointed you in any way.
Safe travels,
Little Fish

Our active family of 5 made this our base of operation from which to rock climb, kayak, mountain bike and take a cooking class. The hotel setting was so beautiful and peaceful that it was a joy to return to at the end of the day, and the early mornings looking out over the river at the misty karst mountains were absolutely ethereal from the River View Superior King Room. It's worth the extra money to get a river view room. Breakfast is served in the dining room or at the tables at the river side. The pleasure of drinking your morning coffee or tea while eating a yummy breakfast can't be overstated.
The tour company for rock climb, kayak and mountain bike (Insight Tours) retrieved us from the lodge so transportation for that wasn't a problem. The cooking school (Yangshuo Cooking School) charged us a fee to transport us to and from, but it was reasonable. Trips into town for dinner or browsing West Street were accomplished with the hotel's free evening shuttle to town and a cab ride back to the hotel. One way cab to town is usually 40 Yuan (between $6-7 USD). We felt that the hotel's remoteness was more of a blessing than a curse.
The wifi in the rooms had a weak signal so we usually had to move closer to the hotel lobby to get a better internet connection. The toilet seat was loose and the door to the bathroom wouldn't stay shut so the room wasn't perfect, but it was clean and comfortable otherwise.

Wow! This place is beautiful, charming, cozy, warm, professional, sophisticated, and laid-back all at once!!!! The staff is tremendous -- so very helpful and warm. The food is delicious -- some of the best we had in China. The rooms are tasteful and charming (with stupendous views if you choose one facing the river). The grounds are gorgeous -- right along the river (we never wanted to leave, but the region is so beautiful we had to see more than just the area around the hotel). Even the other guests were great -- thoughtful, fun, interesting people from all over. In short, the place is just about perfect!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony and a river view -- you will not regret it!
