“The best of both worlds”

This place does a great job at merging Western and Chinese elements. You get the gorgeous setting on the Yulong river, just far enough from Yangshuo town so as to avoid its night-time bustle and all the neon lights. You get staff that have been recruited from nearby villages, and some of the furniture as well as the delicious food is also locally sourced.

On the other hand, you get your creature comforts and the feel that the English-speaking staff really want to be helpful and make things easy – whether you need help getting a driver, suggestions for a bike ride or just an idea of what a realistic price for a bamboo float is. Quite a difference from the „I don't get paid to smile at you“ approach at most Chinese-run restaurants and hotels.

That's not to say there aren't some lost-in-translation moments as Chinese and Western elements meet and mix. But even with dialogues like „Can I check out at 12.15 rather than 12?“ - „I think 12 is better“ or That One Waitress Who Never Smiles, Yangshuo Mountain Retreat is still hands-down the nicest place I have stayed in all my time in China.

I didn't book a balcony room, but just sitting on the bed next to the big window overlooking the river was a treat you don't get tired of. Even in November, temperatures are so mild you can sleep with the window open and enjoy the sound of the river as you drift off.

They rent mountain bikes which are in very good condition, and the quiet that surrounds this hotel is an added bonus. The tvs in the room don't have any channels, they are just screens in case you want to watch a DVD. But really, with the scenery outside being what it is, you'll find yourself out and about all the time anyway.

Room Tip: If you don't want to splurge on a balcony room, 303 has a large window with a beautiful view.

We stayed 5 days in this wonderful place and loved every minute. We had a family room at the top of the main building which was roomy and comfortable with stunning views of the karsts and river, plus a double room in the new building- also comfortable, immaculate and great views. Lovely clean bathrooms and great showers too.
The restaurant was open all day for really good tasty food. It is so cosy with a log fire on cold days. We had to force ourselves to go out in the evenings! During warm weather you can sit on the terrace right by the river and admire the amazing scenery.
The staff were all so helpful and friendly. They spoke great English and were full of information about places to go, cycling routes etc. They arranged taxis and tours very efficiently.
The hotel rents bikes, in good condition, to explore the stunning countryside, peaceful fresh air, just amazing.
I really think that the beautiful views coupled with close proximity to bamboo rafting and Yangshuo make this the very best location to stay.

I asked our travel agent to send us somewhere beautiful and tranquil for a few days rest during our recent sight seeing trip in China. She arranged for us to spend 4 days at Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. It was perfectly located between river and mountains and if you wanted you could spend the entire time swimming, bamboo rafting on the river, cycling around the country side or just kicking back in the beautiful gardens. I would describe this place as rustic, but with all of the necessities provided. The retreat has a first rate restaurant offering a good variety of foods. Breakfast was particularly good, with juice squeezed to order.

Room Tip: Go for a second floor room in the main building overlooking the river

We stayed for two nights at the mountain retreat, rounding off our two week tour in China. What a dream - the perfect way to end our trip and recharge our batteries before heading to Hong Kong.

The staff are friendly, speak good english and are very helpful.

On walking into our room, I was speechless - we had floor to ceiling windows showing the beautiful view of the river and mountains. Absolutely incredible. We spent hours sat out on the balcony, reading and napping in one of the most peaceful places we've had the pleasure of staying in.

The restaurant serves tasty food - we only sampled the chinese which was very good (the toffee banana with vanilla ice cream was a particular highlight!), but they also have a large western selection. Breakfast was a choice from a few set meals, all including more food than one person could ever eat.

We left the mountain retreat feeling fully rested and ready to head on. I throroughly recommend staying here, rather than on the main strip which is full of bars and restaurants. You really feel like you are away from it all and I truly have not stayed anywhere so peaceful.

The hotel is a little way out of town but this is no great hassle as the town itself is a tourist rat race and it is always a pleasure to escape the crowds and site by the river watching the tourist boats drift past. Taxis are easy to get, all know the location (but carry the address in Chinese) and it is only 30 to 40 RMB each way depending on your bargaining ability.

Staff at the hotel are delightful with excellent English and can arrange day trips, bike hire etc. We got them to arrange a pick up at Guilin Airport, as we didn't want to waste time in Guilin or catch the hyped up tourist boat down the main river, which would have been a long and boring trip. Food and surprising drink at the hotel is very good, with affordable wine of reasonable quality (imported).

The hotel will also organise tickets for the sound and light show with transport, which is well worth doing (go for low to medium price seats) as the place is total chaos before the show which is amazingly popular with local tourists.

A drift down the river and a caving trip are also great fun, but the Dragon Cave with its gaudy lighting was a bit tiresome - better to go for a more adventurous cave if you can handle it.

Yangshuo itself is crowded and touristy, but a lot of fun.

Room Tip: Most rooms have decent views, but some have large balconies which are nice especially upstairs.

We booked in here for 2 nights to explore the local area and it has to be the highlight of our trip. The staff were so friendly and helpful, organising trips, taking us on excursions and booking train tickets for us. Breakfast is included in the room rate and was local noodles, which were delicious, mantou (steamed bread) with condensed milk and of course congee. Coffee is a little expensive, as it tends to be in China at 25rmb, whereas a big bottle of beer will set you back 10rmb.

The rooms are quite basic, but comfortable enough and have free wifi. Beds are Chinese style, so rather firm, but not at all uncomfortable. The room had a terrace which looked out over farm land and the beautiful mountains. The only strange thing for me was that the loo was only separated from the sleeping area by a trellis, so be prepared for little privacy! However, the size of the room was more than adequate so it didn't feel as if you we're actually going in the same room as you were sleeping.

The location is great, only a five minute bike ride from views of Moon Hill and across the road from Gold Cave and its mud bath. The road that runs past is busy, but the rooms are at the back of the complex, so noise is not an issue. Bicycles are also available to hire and one of the guys took us to an ancient village, which was great! Most members of staff can speak English and will entertain attempts of speaking Chinese with good humour.

Cannot rate this place enough and would definitely return. If you are heading this way, you really should check this place out for a fantastic experience. Oh, there is also a BBQ evening, which gives you a chance to relax and have a drink with the lovely people there. Awesome place!

Room Tip: Rooms starting with A look over the farmland and beautiful mountains

My husband, elderly mother and I have just returned from the Yangshou Mountain Retreat Hotel. The setting by the Yulong River is absolutely stunning and so peaceful.
However Yangshou town and West Street are only 5/10 mins drive from the resort.
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and all seemed to speak very good English.
The food was good and although the bedrooms were clean and with good air conditioning our only complaint was they were a little dark.
We would definitely return and stay a little longer next time!!!
