“Great Hotel in the thick of all the action.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2011

Ai Yuan Hotel is the correct name. We stayed for 2 nights, only 100 metres from the bus station but we didn't know and caught a taxi costing 8 yuan. Booking in was easy as we had arranged through Agoda. We had a room overlooking West Street. It was spacious and clean with plenty of storage space. The bathroom was also large and clean - no problems here. We were given breakfast vouchers in the Chinese restaurant in the foyer - more on that later. Our initial concern was laundry as we had been travelling for 6 days and were running low. After a roundabout walk we finally located the Speed Queen Laundry Service just a short distance from the hotel. For directions, turn right at hotel exit, left at first street, cross over bridge and about 100 metres further on your left. We found 2 other laundries after this but Speed Queen suited us fine.
The hotel is in West Street where everybody seems to congregate. There are heaps of shops and stalls to peruse but little of interest to us. Many nightclubs and dodgy looking hotels pepper West Street and the surrounding streets contain heaps of cheap eating houses.
Night in West Street is a different story - far more activities and the sounds from the nightclubs is deafening, even in the street outside. Here's the plus for the Ai Yuan - it's at the quiet end of West Street and the windows have double glazing and little if any of the noise penetrates, so a good night's sleep is assured.
We used our complimentary breakfast vouchers on the first morning - a great mistake. First came the cold fried eggs, a cold patty of some sort and other things we were certainly not used to eating. Finally some noodles which were very enjoyable. We felt like a couple of clowns with the staff all watching us pick at the food, so escaped to the safety of a street cafe the following day instead.
The Ai Yuan is a great hotel, secure and a short walk to everything - why would you stop anywhere else?

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking West Street.

We found this hotel on the Ctrip website where a standard twin bed room was listed at 250rmb a night. We booked this hotel by 'phone from Harbin and paid 260 including breakfast. We were worried about getting to Yangshuo, which is over 90 kilometres from Guilin airport but the hotel arranged for us to be collected for 280rmb.

On arrival we found the hotel to be spotless, it seemed as if it had just been refurbished, the staff on reception spoke passable English and were very, very helpful. Our room (on the third floor) was clean, comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was very Chinese, very tasty and plenty of it! Do not expect to get a Western style breakfast.

The only problems we experienced were one, a lack of hot water in the evenings until 7pm and two, no Internet access in the room. This was apparently due to a system failure and could not be fixed until after the Spring Festival because the technicians were all on holiday. We were alowed to use the pay as you go computers in reception without being charged.

This hotel is in a really great position in West Street which is the main street leading from the town centre to the river and the Wharf where all the tourist boats dock. It is about a 10 minute walk down West Street to the river. We did not eat in the hotel as they did not provide for evening meals but there is no shortage of reasonable restuarants in the vicinty. In fact you are spoilt for choice.

We came to Yangshuo to go walking along the river's Li and Yulong. The walks are easily accessible and very enjoyable even if you are sometimes beseiged with locals trying to get you to use their raft or buy their goods. We thought about hiring a bicycle but that would have restricted us to using the larger paths and less able to cross over the river. The Li Jiang walk is well documented on the Internet and easy to follow. It gets a bit boring towards the end because the rural and woodland paths are being replaced by concrete roads and it becomes a road walk into Xing Ping from where you can reasily catch a bus back to Yangshuo.

The Yulong river walk is very different.. The footpaths are less defined and you are passing through farming country all the way. From Baisha to Yangshuo is a good days walk for most people as it takes about 6 hours. It is possible to do it in two stages, Baisha to Juixian and then Juixian to Yangshuo, the only problem being the relatively long walk from Juixian to the main road to catch a bus back to Yangshuo. I found this website to be very helpful in planning the walks. http://chinabackpacker.info/trek/t4.html

Footnote:
When we were in Yangshuo there was an evening show called Impressions which was acted out on the River with a cast of hundreds. If you get the chance don't miss it.

We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights.
We have made a reservation for the PARADESA delux room for 650RMB.
On the way we heard a good reviews from a family that stayed at Ai UAN suit (room 325). We contacted Linda who gave us a price of 680 RMB.
When we got there a friends of us took a simple room for 180 RMB (the initial price Linda gave them weas 280 RMB).
We decided to stay at the delux room for the first nights (380 RMB) and then moved to the suit.
After telling Linda we'r going to move to the Paradesa we got a price of 500RMB for the suit and moved to room 325.
The room is just on the west street (no noise as they have double window). The room is very big and has a computer with free internet, Plasma TV, good aircondition.
The only problem was we didin't alwayd have very hot water. it seems that after we asked they turned on the heater and everything was OK. Don't hink is shpuld be much od a problem if you remind them from time to time....
Stay at this hotel if you'r looking for a centrally located hotel with larger rooms than the paradesa and better price.
After we went to see the Paradesa room i would say that AI-YUAN is better.
Attached are all the pictures.
Don't forget - as everywhere in China, the price you'r going to get from Linda is always the first price.
They have lot's of rooms, so don't hesitate to get without a reservation ! You'll get a much better price that way.
The TAXI can get just to the ebtrance of the hotel and it's located just opposit to PARADESA on the very begining of west street.
The price of room doesnt include breakfest (althpugh they serve one) but you'll get a cheap one (30RMB PP) in one of the many restaurants near the hotel.
the hotel arranged us a TAXi from guilin airport for 280 RMB which is the regular price. Just book in advance because to catch a TAXI from the aiport will cost you more.

Good hotel in a very central location.
Rooms comfortable, clean and large. Nothing flashy but they do the job.
Located on West Street - the main street, but it's about 20 second walk from the top of the very busy section. Most hotels are located within this very busy section which makes them noisy, this is not which is a huge benefit.
About 5 min walk from the docks if you are arriving by a Cruise boat on the River Li (which most are!!).
Staff don't speak great english so make sure you speak clearly and slowly.
Safe deposit boxes are available behind reception.
Good hotel in a great location - I definitely recommend it.

Tips - batter very hard with the market traders. Hire a bike and a guide from the hire place directly opposite the hotel to see the best of the countryside - it's worth it and cost 190 Yuan for the day (about £12).

I'm a long time expat living in Shanghai have stayed at a lot of differenet local hotels in my China travels. Ai Yuan, is undoubtedly the worst hotel experience I have ever had here....

I found this hotel in the Frommers Guide, which gave it a "value" rating. Unfortunately, my family and I found out the hard way what Ai Yuan's management does to offer a (so-so) value (~$30 on standard rooms).

Even though we visiting during a low tourist season, we were surprised to find not a single guest in sight when we arrived. My suspicions should have been really raised when we were asked to fork over a deposit of CNY1500 (~$200) for two balcony rooms which were supposed to cost only US$75 each. However, the clerk seemed honest enough and I paid with the assurance that this was just routine and all the extra money would be refunded to me at checkout time.

We got a first taste of Aiyuan's real service mentality when we got to our rooms. After a long and sweaty ride to Yangshuo, we were looking forward to a nice shower. We felt quite squarely duped when when we turned the tap and found out there was no hot water. Despite complaining politely, the staff on duty adamantely refused to turn the hot water, saying we would have to wait until night time since there were not enough guests to support the cost of heating the water. Deposit had been paid so too late to get a refund...of course.

The rest of the stay was OK enough. TV didn't work right, and the bed was too hard, but the view from the balcony was nice and the beauty of Yangshuo mostly made up for the creature comforts that were lacking at the hotel.

Despite a so-so sleep, the next morning we were in high spirits. Weather was nice, and we had a great river tour lined up on the local Yulong river to capture the beautiful sights of the region. Unfortunately, our tour ran a little over time, and we could not get back until 1pm. Apparently, that was the cue for Aiyuan's calculating staff to spring into action.

At the checkout desk, were were confronted by the manager and a security guard. We were told with a straight face that we would have to fork out a 50% extra fee for over staying the checkout time (apparently 12pm was written in the illegible small print somewhere). We were aghast at the complete lack of service mentality, especially since there was not another single guest in the hotel! In the ensuing argument we realized that Aiyuan's manger was not about reason, but meerly trying to exploit an unsuspecting tourist for a quick buck using whatever means at her disposal. She even threatened to call in more security guards and bar us from leaving unless we paid the balance of what she was demanding, but luckly we escaped, unscathed, before that, forfiting our deposit.

As a small consolation, I did get the name of the manager (Ms. Yang) and reported her to the local tourist bureau, although I can only hope they will take some action to weed out this type of borderline criminal operation. But until that day, my adivce is this: Don't be the next unsuspecting tourist from fall into the Aiyuan's trap. Stay away from Aiyuan....

This hotel was booked for us as part of a package tour of Guilin and Yangshuo. It is on the plaza at West Street.

After running the gauntlet down West Street between the pier and hotel, we met the warm and welcoming staff of the Ai Yuan hotel. The lobby looks a bit austere, but the large sized room had new furniture and some of the nicest decorations in the rooms. The floors are not carpeted. The bathroom was comfortable for two people to use at once.

There is a water dispenser in the room and tea bags are provided. Since we were apparently the only western guests, we were not invited to join the breakfast buffet but instead were served an adequate American breakfast.

It appears the hotel is frequented by tour groups.
