Yangshuo Moon Resort
Ranked #32 of 475 Hotels in Yangshuo County
Reviewed December 14, 2009

If you go to moon resort expecting a western hotel, then you will be disappointed. If you go searching for an honest, human and personal experience, then you will be as pleased as we were. Wei Wei and her family provide guests with an exceptional level of care and humanity and is able to organize all of your activities for every budget. She shares all that she has...fruits, water, etc....and above all, leaves you with a piece of herself.

Despite being denied an education because of her gender, she taught herself English (her English is superb) and Mandarin and opened up her own little hotel. The food was amazing! The food comes in fresh from the gardens or local markets and is cooked with so much care by Wei Wei and her family. I particularly miss the yogurt with honey (honey milled from her father-in-law's bee farm) and the pomelos she peeled for me from her garden.

Travelers should beware, there is no heat, and it can get quite cold in the winter. But we bundled up and were fast asleep.

I would NOT recommend staying in the city center. Staying out at Moon helps you feel integrated into the Chinese countryside, while having a friendly guide to come home to and share your stories. If you want to make it out to the bars, then you can always catch the minibus for 2.5RMB to anywhere.

Again, if you're coming here expecting a holiday inn or mandarin oriental, then go stay in the city center above a loud bar. LOL. You can find one by waiting in front of the KFC. Otherwise, enjoy the generosity and hospitality provided by Wei Wei and the beautiful scenery abound.

Very cold when we went here and that made it a bleak place indeed. Heating was inadequate so it was quite miserable. Wei Wei was extremely helpful so I'd rate the service highly. Judging by the other reviews it must be a great place when it's warm, but not when it is cold. The location must seem better in good weather, too.

For us this was the first time we felt the reviews on Tripadvisor had let us down, as they didn't seem representative of this hotel at all. The hotel photos are also very cleverly done... The hotel itself is not that bad but it's also not as good as the other reviews make it out to be. We spoke to other guests who could also not explain the rave reviews. Of our two view rooms (150 rmb) one looked out the front on mountains with the highway in front (inclusive of traffic noise) and the large neighbouring house. The other room looked on a mountain wall a couple of yards away and the hotel's separate kitchen building. The rooms themselves were sparesly furnished with dead mosquitos stuck to the wall but otherwise ok. We never met this Weiwei everybody mentions, in fact nobody ever intoduced themselves or took special care of us. They booked whichever tour we wanted but every hotel does that, as it's profitable for them. Food - prices ok, beerfish excellent, breakfast avarage with the old man serving the yogurt with his finger and long fingernail in the bowl, every morning. They should really invest in a serving tray. Moonhill village is unfortunately not a pretty village and for the cheap room rates you need to add 40 rmb every time you take a taxi into town. I agree that it is better to stay outside of town but there are nicer options.

We lucked out. Wei Wei and her family were wonderful hosts. For a simple, no frills guest house, this is the place to be. Just a few minutes from crazy, bustling Yangshou, Moon Resort is an oasis of tranquility. Staying during one of the busiest (and lucrative for the tourist industry) holiday weeks, the rates here were incredibly reasonable. The food, both Chinese and Western, was excellent. Wei Wei's advice about the area was faultless. If you have to visit just one place in China, this is it - you will experience the country's most breath-taking scenery, go off the beaten track and bike or hike through rural communities were you will be warmly welcomed. Moon resort is a great base for visits to Guilin and the Longji rice terraces

We stayed for a week. Wei wei and her family were amazingly welcoming. Wei wei organised everything we needed. Wei wei and her husband cooked us amazing breakfasts before we set off each day. She booked climbing, kayaking & cooking lessons for us at a great price. The commute to town is ok by bike but when too hot just get a cab (cheap!) To get home we would get a motorbike taxi or taxi can from beside the train station. We enjoyed Yangshuo so so much.... staying at Moon Hill was great because the town centre is quite busy (especially in the evening). In the evening at Moon Hill we would return from a days activity and perhaps a few sunset beers in town. We would play ping pong and order the best fish dish we have ever ever tasted. Wei wei's husbands Beer fish is so so so so so so amazing,, the chilli used in this province of China is just unbelievable and in this beer fish awwwww (my mouth is watering right now just thinking about it). We enjoyed relaxing with a few beers after dinner and checking emails etc. We were lucky enough to see a few nice evening storms when we were there. The rooms were big and comfortable and at sunset you can watch all the hot air ballon rides..... we miss it!

Moon resort is great 10 out of 10!

The previous two reviews have described the Moon Resort perfectly. No it definitely isn't a resort, what it is is an extremely well run, friendly, small hotel in a small village away from the touristy Yangshuo. Simple in it's facilities, five star in it's character and service.
If you are after a western style hotel with all the trimmings then this isn't for you. But if you have come to China to experience China then this hotel could be just what you are after. After spending time in Beijing, Xian and Hong Kong staying here was like a breathe of fresh air and despite seeing the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors etc my wife tells people this was the highlight of our trip. Where else are you invited to eat with the family that owns the hotel and be treated like a relative rather than just another tourist.
We had three days here and did most of the things others have mentioned. Do what we did and read the reviews others have written, they are accurate and detailed, and make up your own mind. And if you decide to give it a go you can be sure Wei Wei, Derek and their family will give you an experience to remember.

Many other reviewers are saying similar things, so I'll keep this short:

Moon Hill Resort is a family-run guest house in Moon Hill Village, a few kilometers from Yangshuo. We spent 5 nights there, and would happily use it as a base for exploration again. If you're looking for a 4+ star mega resort or posh boutique hotel, this is NOT for you. If you're looking for a genuine, friendly, 'off the beaten path' place you'll never forget, you can do no better. We encountered families and solo travelers who enjoyed it as much as we did.

Pros:
- Serene, scenic location away from the touristy zoo of Yangshuo
- WeiWei and her entire family do everything they can for their guests
- Food was great; we came back for almost every meal
- Room was spacious and clean, with western toilet and wet room-style shower
- Phenomenal value for money

Cons:
- Bring good bug spray! Meals are outside on the nice patio; given the climate mosquitos and other no-see-ums abound. Our spray was low quality, and we got eaten alive.
- There are no guest rooms on the ground floor and no elevator; if stairs are a problem email WeiWei about it before booking

Tips:
- Rent a bike from WeiWei and go get lost in the rice paddies
- WeiWei's local guides are excellent and affordable if you'd rather have someone lead the way
- Consider going to one of the *local* markets on its market day; we saw virtually no toursits and had a great time (we used one of WeiWei's guides and went by bike)
- It's a friendly place; we shared our food with other guests to try more dishes
- The bridge on the way to Yangshuo is a gorgeous setting for sunset photos
