We had a great two days touring Yangshuo with Jing (Feng’s sister) on the first day and then with Feng on our second day.
Both were incredibly friendly, and showed us unspoiled parts of the Yangshuo area by bike (fantastic), boat, raft and on foot.
Our tour started with cycling around the Moon Hill area through remote agricultural villages, beautiful karst mountains and paddy fields. We learnt a lot about how many people live in rural china, and explored areas that we wouldn’t have found without a guide. Jing was absolutely brilliant with the children, and always had a ready smile for all. We hiked up Moon Hill (500 steps) to enjoy the view from the top, and visited a limestone cave and cycled everywhere. Wonderful.
On day 2, Feng picked us up by car, and we drove to the river at Yangti and got on a motorboat to Xingping which is the most spectacular part of the Li river. In Xingping Feng showed us the old town which is very pretty. Afterwards we drove to Fuli where we say traditional fans being made, and on to the market which was a real eye opener. My son had wanted to get some Chinese playing cards which we had seen the locals playing around West Street Yangshuo. We asked Feng and in the market we bought these for 3 RMB. On west street we have been offered them first for 160RMB, then as we walked away for ‘only’ 60RMB. The market was astonishing to western eyes, seeing the local farmers bringing meager produce to sell, and herbal medicines to apparently cure almost any ailment. Fascinating. Afterwards we took a bamboo raft down the Yulong river which was a lot of fun.
I would strongly recommend getting a guide if you are going to Yangshuo. You will do more, experience things and enjoy your time much more with a guide.
Feng’s English is good, slightly better than Jing, but we had a brilliant time with both of them.

Feng took us to the Longsheng rice terraces, down the Li river, biking (get a mountain bike not a lady's bike), down the Yulong river, and arranged a wonderful cooking class. Feng took us to her home where we had the privilege of meeting her father and she was very attentive to detail and to all our needs. For instance, I have to stay on a gluten free diet and she was very helpful at explaining this and making sure that I would be fine. She kept an eye on the watch and on all the arrangements so that we could relax. Oh, were I to do it over, I would lengthen the river rides, particularly down the Yulong, and skip the light show and the cave. Finally, don't be surprised or upset that guides get informal commissions on arrangements/tips. You are visiting China.

In May my wife and i were fortunate enough to have Feng as our guide for three days ,around Yangshuo area. Feng was knowledgable and helpful. We were picked up and returned to Guilin Airport and spent 3 days with Feng showing us all the Attractions of the area, either be it by boat, raft , car or bike . Feng knows what tourists want and all her recommendations were highlights of our China Trip. Feng was a delight to be with , and made us feel so welcome in her Country. We could not recommend her more highly.

My husband and I spent 4 days with Feng as our guide and I can honestly say that thanks to her we had the best experience.
When I planned our trip I emailed quite a few local guides and to be honest was not sure if I should contact one directly or use a travel agency so that if anything goes wrong I will have an address to contact.
Feng somehow earned my trust and my instincts about her proved to be right.
She responded to my emails fast, presenting an original itinerary, assuring that all is OK; answering every question I had and built the best itinerary according to our whishes and schedule.
Her English is very good and, more important with Chinese guides, it was clear!
She is very reliable, warm, funny, energetic, clever and has fantastic knowledge of the area and Chinese history (Feng studied History at Guilin's university).
She grew up in a farmer family with six children and was the one chosen by them to go to University, a huge effort for poor farmers and meaning they all worked for years to pay for it.
Her driver met us at Guilin airport (new spacious and clean KIA) and drove us to the Moondance hotel in a small village outside Yangshuo (which turned out to be Feng's village).
Feng met us there and drove with us to the Lightshow, making sure we have the best seats-She practically took us inside to our seats, showed us where the way out is and met us outside at the end of the show.
Next morning Feng came to the hotel and took us on a bicycle trip through little paths in the fields around explaining about the farmers' life, local customs and ancient and modern china.
She seemed to know everyone we met during the trip, greeting each one with a smile, chatting and translating. Later she led us to a point where we took a bamboo boat for a raft down a beautiful section of the Yulong River and 2 hours later she waited at the end point with our bicycles.
We had lunch at Feng's family house, it was very interesting to see how they live and her sister cooked a delicious meal over open fire (no gas, no running water !)
We continued cycling to the cave and Moon Hill and went back to the hotel for an afternoon break.
In the evening Feng met us at the hotel again and took us to Yangshuo for the Cormorant fishing. She arranged for us to go on a private fishing tour with a fisherman that had 6 Cormorants – an intresting experience if you can respect this ancient clever fishing method and ignore the way the Cormorants are treated (!). After the fishing tour Feng took us to a fantastic Chinese restaurant in West Street (Cloud 9) and of course the dining experience with someone who knows the local dishes was quite different.
Also, when shopping at West Street, Feng made sure we receive good quality and helped us bargain a fair price.
Next morning we checked out of the hotel and Feng took us to XingPing for a raft down a different section of the Li River (a very wide section that was used for transferring goods from Hong Kong) and for a visit in XingPing and the local market (very recommended, we were the only tourists there and like ancient days, the farmers come to the market to trade, have a haircut, purchase tools, meet friends etc).
Later we had a 3 hours drive to Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Terraced Rice Fields. Again Feng proved to be invaluable- the original plan was to dine in Pingan at Longji but since we were hungry Feng stopped on the way in the middle of nowhere at a restaurant that was part of a farmer's house.30 minutes later we had the most delicious and fresh meal – the vegetables were collected from the garden while we ordered, the chicken bones were used for a delicate soup and other parts were steer fried with vegetables and peanuts… it was so good that we asked Feng to stop there the next day on our way back !
We spent the night up in Pingan village (it was suggested by Feng- not to be missed!) and at 5:30 am she was there to climb with us to a spot where we watched an unforgettable sunrise.
After breakfast, we had a beautiful hike around the terraces and the village and retreated just in time as the day tours crowds came up to the village.
Feng and the driver took us to Guilin airport for our flight to Beijing, again she made sure we pass check in before saying goodbye.
Amazing experience in Yangshuo and China thanks to Feng! Highly recommended!
Feng now has her new website http://www.yangshuoguide.com/, her email is feng@yangshuoguide.com

We had Feng for a guide for a few days in Yangshuo. We were picked up and taken out to the rice terraces for the night which was spectacular. It's obvious that she knows the majority of the local people in the area as well as in town. She took us up to the two viewing points in village and took us to a great place to eat near our hotel. She organized some other activities for us, 2 bamboo rides, the impression light show, took us to the local Xiping market, some kayaking on the Li River, and the Silver Cave. We got more out of out our experience in Yangshuo with her than we would have ever gotten done on our own. It was the only part of our whole trip that we got a guide. She even got us a scooter rental and brought it to our hotel. Not only a great experience but very affordable as well.
