I just came back from 3 nights at Tea Cozy. A fantastic place. Great and helpful staff (perfect English and very knowledgeable). The hotel itself is very tastefully done up: from the exterior to the rooms to the fireplace downstairs to the outdoor gazebo with glass bottom over a koi pond! (The views are however not the best - good enough but nothing special.. though that is hardly the hotel's fault!)

The staff - especially the very competent and very friendly manager Curry - responded to emails, arranged transfers to and from Guilin airport and went out of their way to make my stay as pleasant as possible - something they did very successfully!

So re the hotel itself I have no complaints.

But theres two small issues: cost and location. The hotel is a 30-50RMB ride out of town (and Yangshuo town is very nice at night so you will want to see it) and there is no way around this. No bus, and too far to cycle. On the one hand I'd say that the hotel is so nice that its worth it (plus you will be close to the western part of Yangshuo) but on the other hand it does add an extra cost to an already pricey bill. Which brings me to cost:

At 480RMB you'd expect a free breakfast! Failing that you'd at least expect to have free use of the bicycles (40RMB per day). This wasnt my first trip to China and having to pay for the bicycles seemed unusual. It seems nothing besides the two bottles of complementary water comes with the room's price tag. At first I was even told that I would have to pay for the map that they give out to guests (10RMB) but they either forgot to charge me or thought better of it. Paying for the map would have been outrageous! But even re the breakfast and the bikes I think RMB480 should cover that.

So i highly recommend this hotel but be aware that it comes with a heavy price tag.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor obviously have the best views.

Dear Gerasto,
Thanks very much for staying at our place and for your good advise. We are planning to start a free shuttle bus service everyday (with set times in the morning and in the afternoon) from March 7th of 2013, from our hotel to the center of Yangshuo town. We are currently working on that service and hopefully it will be more convenient for our guests. For the bicycle rental, we give our guest free use of it if you are booking for 3 or more nights with us, but only through direct booking with us. Sorry if that was not clear in our web page. In our special promotion page, we also mentioned a one way free airport shuttle service if you stay with us for 4 or more nights. For the tourist map, it is a good suggestion that we give them for free along with other information needed. Lastly, for the breakfast, we try to make it as fresh as possible with a variety of options (traditional Chinese and Western). Unfortunately, it's difficult for us to offer breakfast for free but we will try to offer them within a reasonable price range. Thank you for your understanding and we hope to see you again.
Richard and Curry.

We spent 4 days at Yangshuo at Tea Cozy and everything was fantastic. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel because the food was so tasty and good, my favourite the bananan crepe for breakfast and the sizzling meat for dinner, absolutely fantastic!.. Our room was spacious and well equipated with a terrace overlooking the montains. The scenery is really relaxing and invite you to share some nice moments talking to other guests at Tea Cozy after dinner. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed a lot this part of our journey in China. Perfect English speaking staff, quite friendly and easy going, they helped us arranging a lot of activities during our 4 days stay. We suggested what we liked to do (where I highly recomend cooking Sichuan Cuisine and cycling around) and they just planned the most efficient journey including transportation for a reasonable price. The hotel location is outside the city center, which is actually the best is actually better and allows you to enjoy the nature. The city center for shopping and other restaurants is easy reachable by bike or taxi.

This hotel was the best one we have stayed during our 3 weeks trip across China. It was opened only few months ago. Location is perfect - app. 3 km far from Yanghsou (so you will avoid crowds of Chinese tourists and noise of the city while still being close to everything), only few minute walk to Yulong river. Beautifully decorated rooms are big with comfortable beds and spotless clean bathroom.

Staff is very helpful and they can arrange lots of different trips around Yanghshou.

Co-owner of the hotel, Richard, is an excellent cook and he cooks every night in a hotel restaurant. Food we had in hotel restaurant was one of the best we had in China. Kitchen is perfectly clean and menu is quite extensive - lots of Chinese and also international food.

Except for small restaurant on a ground floor, there is also a beautiful roof terrace where you can have your dinner while watching sunset.

I would love to come here again as we have stayed here for 3 nights only which is surely not enough as this area offers lots of interesting places to see and things to do.

What a great place this is !! Would want to keep it a secret, but that would not be fair to the fantastic people, that run this little heaven.
Tastfull, beautiful, placed in a dreamlike landscape.
Perfect english speeking staff, truly enjoying to arrange everything to please their guests.
A large range of activities are available for the guests, including guides and very well arranged transport. There are no worries in this place. You truly feel at home.
One small problem ( that i am sure they will take care of shortly) is that they have a warm water system on the roof, making far too mach noise.
It took away 1 night of my sleep, but they turned it off next night to please me.

Will definitely come back ( if they still would have space, because they surely will be fully booked in future, which they deserve. )
The food is so good, that the people staying up in the terrace in the evening, applauded the cook, when she went home !

It was an honour to have stayed there.

We had read all previous reviews, and had very high expectations. Unlike many hotels that we have stayed at, Tea Cozy did not disappoint. A true gem. One of a kind. No hesitation in giving 5 stars. Overall, a phenomenal experience that we will not forget.

We agree with the previous reviews: the location/views are stunning, amazing, mystical; the village life is relaxing and authentic; Richard and Curry are excellent tour guides and hotel managers: knowledgeable, flexible, accommodating, and committed to excellence; the other staff (Jessica, James, Amy, wish I could remember the names of all) were likewise professional, happy, and enthusiastic; the decor is excellent; rooms were very clean; the water was hot, predictable, and good pressure; the food (both western and local) exceeded my expectations.

Tea Cozy is not perfect, however, and not for everyone. Here are some caveats/suggestions for improvement:

1. Stay here only if you do not want to be very close to town.

2. The internet in our room was slow at times, and somewhat unpredictable (though the lobby was very good).

3. Lighting in our room was low (didn't bother us), but there's plenty of natural light from the large window that overlooks the deck. As in many hotels there could have been more closet/storage space (again, not a big deal at all).

4. While Richard and Curry were both excellent guides, at times they set us up with locals that spoke no English, ran ahead of us, etc. We didn't mind, but others might.

5. While the setting is rural, almost idillyic, the road in front of the hotel does lead to a bamboo rafting place, so there are at times buses filled with tourists and tourists on bikes. Especially on weekends.

6. My biggest question: how long will the excellence last? This place is new. I hope that their commitment to excellence continues!

We hope to come back, and will recommend highly to others.

Room Tip: Ours was the suite with a bathtub. Excellent in every way: roomy, outstanding views from every win...

This is the second time that I have come to the Tea Cozy. On our first trip, four of us has an adventure filled weekend- bamboo rafting, kayaking, cycling, mud caving! Richard Chen and his team provided us with guidance and expertise making our trip an unforgettable one. The ambiance of the hotel is lovely, clean well appointed rooms with great attention to detail. Tasty food and generally a beautiful place. When my 88 year old mother wanted to experience a little of China, I thought, who better than Richard Chen. From beginning to end, Richard organized everything, was incredibly patient and looked after my mother impeccably. Richard took us on guided driving trip through the area, pointing out all the notable sights and got us superb tickets for the Impression show. We could not stay at the Tea Cozy as they do not have rooms on the ground floor (our loss) but we had lovely vegetarian meals there and excellent service. If you are looking for a great getaway with equally great service, contact Richard Chen at the Tea Cozy. You will not regret it.

We spent 2 nights in Yangshou as part of a 3 week family trip to China, and I can wholeheartedly say that the 2 nights spent here were the best. The hotel is charming, indeed Cozy and extremely welcoming. Richard and the entire staff did everything they could to make sure our stay would be enjoyable, including arranging a special "kung fu" lesson for my older son, and buying Tylenol - and bringing it to our room late at night - for our youngest son. I also highly recommend a day bike trip with Richard, throughout Yangshou (and elsewhere too!), and if you're lucky, he'll also cook for you the best Chinese meal you'll eat during your stay in China. In hindsight, the only flaw is that we should've stayed here longer.
