Yangshuo Phoenix Pagoda Fonglou Retreat

I have travelled throughout China and I can honestly say this hotel has the highest level of service THROUGHOUT your stay. There are many places that are very welcoming when you first check-in, but few that continue to offer that high level of service during your entire stay. The owners and staff take an interest in you here and with their fluent english, make sure that you are looked after. This is all on top of an incredible beautiful building with majestic views set in a serene and quiet location 8 kms away from the hustle and bustle of touristry Yangshuo. If you're looking for peace and quiet, yet close to the main tourist attractions of this region, you won't find any better. The restaurant and chef are excellent. I normally try to get to as many restaurants as I can when I travel in China, however, the on-site family style restaurant here serves excellent food and even provided me with a cooking lesson for my favourite mapo tofu dish. Thank-you Jerry, Lily and Ann for an incredible stay and sorry it took me so long to write a review. All of you deserve the very best!

Some tips for the area: Take a walk towards the smaller river (turn left outside of the building and keep heading in that direction) and explore the nearby villages. They're beautiful and give you some better perspective of life outside of Yangshuo. Ask Jerry and Lily for tips on how to get back and forth to Yangshuo. It's a great walk as well if you have the time. Bikes make it quicker and is reasonably safe since so many others are also biking the streets.

After having been to Beijing, Xi'an and Qingdao, Yangshuo was exactly the break we were looking for. Phoenix Pagoda was the best choice we could have made for our stay. The rooms aren't like a 5 star hotel (IE no TV) but that's what you're trying to get away from. The décor is rustic, its very clean and the beds are great. We went on a couple of hikes to Square Mountain and Moon hill which were very close to the hotel that we enjoyed.

What really makes this hotel special aside from the views from the balcony are the people at Phoenix Pagoda (The rooms with balconies are the ones to get btw).

Lily and Ann (Hotel staff) were fantastic and made sure that we were comfortable and helped us coordinate whatever we needed to do away from the hotel. If you're lucky, you will meet Jerry, one of the owners of the hotel. Being able to spend time with him on our hikes as well as during dinner really made us feel like honored guests. I noticed that he does his best to spend time like this with all of his guests which is more than you would get at a 5 star hotel let alone anywhere.

The food here is fantastic, we had food all over China and this was the best. We didn't want to eat anywhere else.

One of the things that Jerry said to me as part of our many discussions was that if someone were to be able to see something that is at the hotel and copy it easily, then it is not the core value of what we have. If someone can take a person or two and replicate what we have, then that isn't the core value either. Its the culture that you build as part of your product that matters. He's certainly succeeded at that.

We stayed here for 3 nights and we didn't feel like we had enough time. If I were to face facts, we were all very sad to leave because we felt like we had made friends with Jerry, Lily and Ann but as Jerry says, you don't want to be happy to leave.

We're definitely coming back. Thanks Jerry!

We loved our stay! The hotel and the staff are amazing. Jerry, Lily and Ann are great and so helpfull with everything. The are happy to give you advice and arrange things for you. You feel very welcome here.

The rooms are beautiful, very clean and the beds were the best we've sleeped on in China! The bathroom and shower is also very good, hot water and a great rainshower.

The views are also spectacular!
If we return to yangshuo we would definitely stay here again.

Great place for a couple or for a family, as they have family rooms.
The team is very nice and cheerful all the time.
There was a very good breakfast and also the lunch/dinner were great. The vegetables were very fresh and tasted like they came right from their garden.
The location is excellent: just outside the busy crowd of Yangshuo city, but still easily accessible with a nice 25 min bike ride. The hotel has the bikes available.
In summary, a clean hotel at very good value with a very nice people. Highly recommended!

This is a beautiful place with great rooms. We had a really good time cycling, walking, boating etc.
The place is run by the fabulous Lily who seems to do everything eg running up and down the stairs to serve in the restaurant, delivering laundry back to your room, rising early to say goodbye when we went for an early flight. She is an endless source of local information and was always lively and ready to chat and to help. I couldn't help wishing she had more English speaking staff to do the client facing stuff to free her up to be the manager, because she is amazing and working too hard! (she would never hint of complaining of course)
The food is excellent especially the breakfast. If you fancy a change of scene for dinner one night the newish snazzy Moondance Hotel is just next door over the river (that hotel has a classy atmosphere but we were a little underwhelmed by the food in its restaurant and didn't particularly wish we were staying there instead).
When we caught a bus into town it wasn't that successful (maybe we caught the wrong one) and we ended up being dropped still quite far south of the centre and had a hot, not very scenic walk of over 30 minutes to reach the centre, so next time we would just get a taxi. The town centre was fun though - worth a trip but much better to stay out here
When we went out on bikes we didn't find the recommended route - we still had a great time but maybe a print out of a hand drawn map could be arranged?
Anyway, a big thanks to Lily for a fab time

We thoroughly enjoyed our
7 night stay . Half way through we visited the Rice Fields and stayed for 2 nights leaving our bags at the Phoenix.
It was a real pleasure to return for 4 further nights.
Initially I was concerned about staying for so long but we had been in Shanghai and were ending out trip in Beijing so needed some rest and recuperation. Which is what we got.
There was lots to do and with advice from Lily made the most of every day.
We did a bike trek with bike Asia which I would recommend. Gives you confidence to explore the area by yourself. Later hired bikes from the Phoenix which were good. Lilly gave us maps and more advice about where to go and what to see.
It is easy to get into Yangshuo on local transport of alternatively by taxi.
It was always a relief to return to the peace and quiet of the Phoenix .
The staff are fantastic . Thankyou so much to Lily, Ann and Lou for making out stay so memorable.
The food is great and we enjoyed both the Chinese and western dishes .

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony.

We’re a couple from NYC who have been living in China for a couple years. This was by far our favorite trip within China, not just because Yangshuo is such a unique & stunning place, but because this particular hotel is so special!

If you’re coming to Yangshuo to enjoy the natural scenery & tranquility, by all means do NOT stay in the downtown part of Yangshuo. It’s just a big dirty bustling city like any other Chinese city. There’s a KFC there. Yeah. We went into town one time and couldn’t wait to get back to the Fonglou area. Downtown Yangshuo seriously harshed our holiday mellow.

There are lots of hotels outside of downtown Yangshuo-- out in the surrounding countryside. This is where you wanna be.

The particular valley where Phoenix Pagoda is located is quite brilliant (Fonglou). It feels remote and magical. When you stand on the rooftop patio (where we ate most of our meals), the views in ev. direction are insane. But the hotel is just a minute walk down to a little tributary river and bikable/walkable paths which wind through villages. It’s quite close to Moon Hill and caves and near a main road.

We jumped on some nice mountain bikes they have out front and spent our last couple days exploring the area by bike. Lily and Ann can take care of any request — bamboo raft trip down the Yulong/ transportation to the Longji Rice Terrace/ airport pick-up, whatever you need. One night Lily brought us banana smoothies to our room at 10pm. The first night we arrived quite late, and Lily set up a rooftop table by lantern light so we could eat delicious pasta, kung pao chicken (best we’ve had in China) and icy cold beers and look out over the moonlit karst peaks. Aaaaahhhhh.

It’s a very relaxed and soothing environment. Not just the valley and surrounding geography, but the hotel & rooms themselves. Our corner room had two balconies, both with amazing views, huge windows, a shower with windows that opened out onto a beautiful view. To. Enjoy. While. You. Showered. The bed was super comfortable — plentiful and excellent-quality pillows, immaculate white cotton bed linens. (This is not the norm in China, esp. for such a reasonably priced hotel!)

The room is well equipped (hair dryer, kettle, AC, wifi, abundant complimentary bottles of water, etc) but with an authentic rustic charm. Deep stone tub and sink basins. Coat rack made from tree branches. I loved the recessed brick alcove under the bed (with a nightlight) where they put your slippers. While plain, the details of the room made it very inviting. And the views are unequalled.

The rooms are also equipped with an electric mosquito coil, which we needed one night and it worked like a charm (it’s silent).

The meals are served either on the rooftop patio (tables have large umbrellas), the second-floor airy and casual diningroom, or on the ground-floor picnic table area, and everything we tried was delicious, both Chinese and western food. The Fonglou special pizza was superb. One night we had a salad with greens they had just picked from their front garden, with a perfect homemade vinaigrette. The sunset from the roof is stunning.

We also loved lingering over breakfasts on the roof! The excellent coffee, French toast, mini-omelets, yoghurt & granola, freshly squeezed orange juice… all while gazing out at the towering karst mountains, shimmering rice fields & bamboo trees fanning from the riverbanks. Heaven.

Lily & Ann and the entire staff were adorable, helpful, and kind. They really helped to create the perfect kind of relaxed, intimate and chill vibe. I cannot recommend this place enough. For the love of all things good and beautiful in the world, do yourself the nicest favor you’ll ever do for yourself, and book a stay at this lovely hotel in one of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world.
