Arranged one day of transportation to/from Yangshuo and a one day tour with Andy to the rice terraces while in Guilin. Both trips were fantastic and we were able to organize both exactly how we wished. The tours are priced very competitively so you can shop around but why not go with someone everyone thinks is good! You don't really need a guide either place (even though I speak Mandarin I think would have been fine with only English - except in local local restaurants where the menu are only in Chinese and the staff only speaks Chinese - then you need a menu with photos!) Andy is great company and he told us a lot of interesting things about the rice terrace area so was great going with him. Highly recommend taking both these trips - hopefully Andy is available to go with you! November weather is not the best - hazy, etc. I hear spring is nice.

Andy is a great guide for seeing the beauty of the Yangshuo area. There is so much to see and do there and he does his best to make sure you have the opportunity to pack as much into your visit as possible. Our trip was brief - just one full day and a portion of another. So it was a great challenge for him and he really rose to the occasion. We wish we had more time to spend here, and definitely plan to return to this stunning part of the world.

We initially found Andy using Trip Advisor reviews, and also received a recommendation for his services from our Beijing guide. We were pleased that he was able to take us to some of the more scenic spots (a highlight being the Mountain Overlook) as photo opportunities were a primary goal for us.

He is organized, prompt, conscientious, personable, patient and a very good driver. There is actually quite a bit of driving to get from one scenic spot to another, and his car was very comfortable and safe. Andy deserves major praise for the very long 12 hour plus day he spent with us, keeping a sunny and energetic disposition throughout. He also brought us to a couple of very good and relatively inexpensive restaurants during our time with him.

A caution to others - try to spend at least 3 days here to truly enjoy it at a reasonable pace.

This tour proved to be one of the most memorable experiences ever in all of my travels. I felt like I was living an adventure right out of National Geographic. Our guide Sunny was the epitome of her name, so warm-hearted and friendly, earnestly wanting to and fully succeeding in make our trip one great moment after the next.

I had spotted the Yangshuo Private Tours company (www.yangshuo-private-tours.com) on Trip Advisor and thought it sounded just right for the type of visit to the Li River/Guilin area that my colleague and I hoped to have while in China. We communicated with Sunny via email telling her of our interests and limited travel time and she designed a trip that made the most of each moment we were there. She provided us with an itinerary itemized by the cost for each tour item and then made it convenient to prepay via PayPal. We later learned that the tour company is run by her and her husband.

Upon arrival our driver was waiting for us with a sign as we left the airport baggage area. It was already dark by the time we were loaded into the car and driving to our hotel in Guilin. Our driver and another couple riding with us that was going to the same hotel did not speak English. Then all of a sudden the driver’s cell phone rang and she handed it to me. I was surprised and delighted to hear Sunny’s voice welcoming us to Guilin and explaining that the drive to our hotel would take 40 minutes and then reviewing the plans for tomorrow morning. I felt that was a nice touch and made me feel like we were in good hands with a highly promising journey for the day ahead.

Once settled in our hotel (Jing guan ming lou Holiday Hotel) we decided to dine in the restaurant on the top floor that had a nice view of the lake and the ubiquitous neon in China reflecting in the water. Our dinner was tasty enough, but the part that proved to be so memorable that evening was the fascinating display cabinets with all the beautiful works of art. We were astounded at the artwork we found throughout the hotel and asked if it was for sale. We were told yes, but when we inquired about a stone bird sculpture that had caught our eye it seemed to cause a flurry of activity with multiple people involved in the process. When a price was finally communicated we thought there must be some mistake, surely it couldn’t be right. Still puzzling over the cost the next morning the front desk person provided the necessary illumination over our experience…the hotel actually houses the private art collection of the hotel owner who had been collecting these beautiful treasures over the last thirty years. We got a good laugh over that and now everything made sense.

Sunny along with a different driver picked us up early the next morning after we had enjoyed a Western breakfast at our hotel. We were soon making our climb up the many steps to Reed Flute Cave. It was off season and we were there early enough in the morning so we could enjoy the caves without the crush of tourist crowds. At one point there was one tour that came near to us but Sunny had us wait so they could pass and we could resume our visit at our own pace. Next we drove to Yangshuo and boarded our boat. The Li River Cruise in the small motorized rafts was so picturesque….the cruise lasts for about an hour and a half providing views of the prettiest part of the river vs the five hour cruise of the larger boats. We were awed by the gorgeous, stunning scenery that seems almost surreal.

Next we returned to Yangshuo and stopped for lunch. Sunny chose a spot based on our request for dumplings and they were simply divine…some of the best if not the best ones I’ve ever had [Northeast Dumpling Restaurant ( 东北饺子馆),it is near by the Bamboo House Resort]. She explained that dumplings were more of a northern dish and suggested we try some Southern China dishes but we were hungry for dumplings and decided to try the local specialties later that evening for dinner.

After lunch we had a walking tour of the countryside that Sunny so obviously loved. It was fun to follow her footsteps as she pointed out areas and items of interest as we walked on stone paths across waterways and through local farmers rice fields and very old dwellings. We decided the fresh water snails were likely the main ingredient of our seafood dinner the night before. We found it tasty but of an unusual texture we couldn’t quite put our finger on at the time.

After our very full day of wondrous sights, we were deposited at the Magnolia Hotel in Yangshuo with instructions for our very early departure for the next day. Sunny made arrangements with the hotel to have our breakfast made to go so that we could eat it during our ride back to the airport in Guilin. She also encouraged us to walk the area around the hotel that evening to find a restaurant for dinner. After exploring the area, we chose a rather large establishment set slightly back from the street with big windows overlooking the streams of people walking around the area. It turned out to serve a very good beer fish and the sticky rice dessert infused by the herbal taste of the leaf it was served on, two of Sunny’s favorites she described earlier in the day. We did seem to cause a bit of a challenge for the wait staff since we didn’t speak Chinese and I think they just wanted to avoid us for that reason, but the tasty meal and fun view out the windows watching the people made up for it.

In summary, we had an outstanding day exploring the magical sites of the area with our excellent guide. We would love to repeat the experience some day and would highly recommend Yangshuo Private Tours.

When we contacted Andy we said we wanted to spend two days at the Longji rice terraces, go by boat on the Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo, go bamboo rafting on the Yulong River and see the main sights of Yangshuo, then go hiking for a day around Yangshuo. Andy was honest enough to say (correctly) that, with two days available, we DIDN'T need a guide for Longji. He organised all the rest, and besides Yangshuo's Moon Hill & Xianggong Mountain as arranged, also took us to a stone village. On the final day's hike our guide was Rong, who was also very good.

We had a one day tour from Pingan to Yangshuo, Andy was our driver, he speaks good english, has a modern car and is reliable. What I missed, was to have a deeper look behind the scenes, the spots we were and the things we did were average standard tourist things. Overall you can definitely plan with him, but should maybe be more detailed in what you expect.
