“nice stay under the mountains”
Reviewed June 13, 2012

First thing we noticed was moon hiding up in the mountains right above our little villa. The view was incredible. Rooms were nice, a bit too much space, which you never use. After showering it was a big lake (how we called it) on the floor. But in general it was fine. Breakfast, renting buy and huge Labrador dog, super friendly and funny.
Good thing that hotel is away from the West Street, which is crowded all the time.
Stuff very helpful, they helped us to organise EVERYTHING from Liusanjie show till the trip to Guilin Rice Terrace. Totally recommended!

Last weekend I came to Yangshuo with two friends who work in Shenzhen. We arrived very late at night after getting off the highway from Guangzhou. After sevearl minutes we saw along the roadside a hotel still with the lights on, it was Mountain View Retreat. We got inside and ask the receptionist whether there are still rooms. The guy was very friendly and spoke very good English and suggested different kinds of the rooms. We chose two rooms lncluding breakfasts. As it was already very late, he helped us with our luggage and went to our rooms. We were really tired and decided to sleep right away after taking a hot shower.
The next morning we got up and found out in front of my room were beautiful karst mountains, it was amazing. The hotel is quite big with several sections with different kinds of rooms all painted in white color.
We had breakfast. It was really very nice, tastey and well presented.
I thought What a good satrt of our Yangshuo tour.

Garyth from Amsterdam

Room Tip: They also showed me the honeymoon room. It was very large with an equal large bathroom and a big win...

I've never reviewed accommodation on TA before but felt some of the negative comments needed to be balanced. Me and my 2 friends stayed at MVR in March 2012 and though we only had 2 nights, we were all sad to leave. The little apartments were set away from the main road & we requested 'beautiful views' from our room and that's exactly what we got - backdrop of mountains. The rooms were a good size, clean and functional. The bathroom had an amazing large bath which we were gutted we didn't take advantage of, while the shower was a little unconventional (no cubicle, just 2 outflow pipes, one by the toilet so make sure you wear shoes!) but there was warm water throughout the day. Our room got cleaned & our bed sheets changed each day.

The menu covered traditional Chinese cuisine and Western favourites such as pizza, pasta & omelette (very nice) and although I felt a little silly asking for Ketchup, they did have it in stock! There was a large outhouse where you could go to play cards, dice & drink tea while the seating area included a pool & ping pong table with cute private huts around the edges where we saw regular groups come in for their daily meal.

But, saving the best till last; Sam, the manager's left hand man was a complete star. We booked a transfer from the airport to the hotel & when the taxi broke down & we arrived 2 hours later than expected, he couldn't apologise enough, offering us a couple of free beers & discount on the taxi cost. He spoke fluent English & was more than helpful advising us where to go e.g. the dragon caves/Li River bamboo boat ride etc. He also told us how much we should expect to pay the taxis & entrance costs for the excursions. But he truly went beyond his call of duty, taking us 3 girls out to his manager's bar in Yangshuo & giving us a real chinese experience with the plate of chicken feet! Very friendly and kind and we seriously don't know what we would have done without him.

Guilin is a beautiful part of China & while we booked this hotel last minute (a spontaneous trip from our holiday in Hong Kong) we're very glad we came & stayed here. It was 10 mins away by car from the central village lined with restaurants, bars & market stalls. Make sure you bargain with the traders, try the local street food such as tofu & if you're a westerner, be prepared to receive some attention. We sat for a beer after shopping & we were being papped left right & centre. A table behind us bought us roses & a couple of Chinese men came to sit with us to practice their English. All very friendly & fun. Make the most of it; Guilin is beautiful, unlike any landscape I've seen before in my travels.

Thank you very much for your kind review of our hotel. Since then we have done a lot to make improvement of our guest rooms, such as front or rare windows for better air circulation in the room, also separate the bath room in dry and wet area.
There is also a new young chef who is very creative and good at making different kinds of European food to satisfy our guests need.
We are making more progress step by step, besides improving our hardware, we also speed up our staff trainning. Our goal is to welcome more and more European guests to stay with us and have an unforgettable trip in Yangshuo.

i was looking at yangshuo mountain retreat on TA and clicked to book and was led to this hotel on agoda. i was not aware it was a different property and thought agoda was running a special on the room rates for mountain retreat. i met someone else in china that did the same thing--tho they realized the mistake and amended before checking in. i was definitely confused when i arrived at the hotel because it didn't quite look like what i thought it should and there was no river. no matter since i literally just needed a bed for overnight. i believe i was the only guest the night i stayed. i booked a basic room which was pretty big. the area seems to get pretty humid and even the floors of the room were sweaty and the bathroom was fogging up. the a/c unit is pretty effective tho once you figure out how to use it. the bathroom is asian style, with open shower area. perhaps my shower time was too long cuz the water wasn't draining fast enough and was collecting throughout the bathroom area. the room had comp bottled water and dental kit.

i went out early the next morning to take pictures and was greeted by the resident wolf dog. it doesn't bark at all but it's enormous and very playful. its playful, however, is a bit intimidating since it's such a gigantic dog with big teeth and a strong jaw. it was biting and tearing at my foot, my pants and wouldn't let go. i called out for help and luckily there was one man in the distance that called the dog over. so beware if you are really scared of dogs.

the outdoor dining area looks festive and has a pool table and ping pong table. i had a bowl of guilin mifun in town for 3rmb. there is a refundable key deposit, 200-500rmb depending on who you talk to.

I had a fantastic experience at this hotel. The views are amazing, very glad we stayed away from the town as it is so crazy and busy! Having never visited Yangshuo or Guilin before I was a bit worried about travelling with a group of girls from England with zero Chinese language knowledge. I called up the hotel beforehand and arranged for a transfer from the airport (300 yuan) the hotel receptionist Sam spoke perfect English and while we were there we felt like he really looked after us during our stay. All staff members were really friendly, we actually felt like we were part of the family. They even took us out into town on our first night, bought us some beers and showed me and my friends how to play the dice game! We had a triple room with three nice big comfy double beds. Everytime I have stayed in mid-range China hotels, I've had an average experience. At the Mountain View retreat this was not the case, the experience was personal and to our tastes. Sam arranged all our trips and made sure we got back safely everytime we went into town in the evening. The food is delicious, make sure you try their ma pa to fu, it's really good and the quantities are large so you can share. The western food was also very tasty. My only regret is not staying another night and having a bath in the massive bathtub, but that's ok... I will be back!!

We believe this is now under new management and maybe their first hotel. We booked 2 standard rooms and one Honeymoon Bungalow, we were 3 Westerners and one Chinese. The rooms were clean, but a little shabby in the detail, as an example no shower door and the water runs to the drain right in front of the toilet and to the doorway between the bathroom and bedroom, so expect wet feet when using the toilet! The jacuzzi in the bungalow was very nice for 2 people, with lovely views over the country side, but people do work in the fields so unless you are an exhibitionist you should put the blinds down before using the bathroom!

As for the service they had a good choice of food on the menu like English BF but many of the ingredients were absent. The eggs were stone cold on two of the BF, and when we told them it was replied impossible, well maybe they cooked the eggs then the toast and put on a cold plate so by the time it was served the eggs were stone cold!

We booked a boat trip and clearly the person from the hotel was out to make. Quick Buck from the tourists and we were very much overcharged for fixed rate tourist attractions. It was not a pleasant start to the day so would recommend booking with one of the many locations in West St.

But the manager was friendly and spoke very good English as many people do in this area.

We would like to try this place again in maybe a couple of years once they are used to looking after customers and realizing to keep customers happy and having staff who are customer friendly (oh and know how to look after there lovely dog who got a big kick just for being happy to see guests)
