“Delightful and peaceful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2012

We (2 families: 4 adults, 2 teenagers) stayed here for 4 nights in early-July 2012 and didn't want to leave. Despite including an excellent restaurant, this place feels more like a well-set-up and friendly guest house than a formal hotel.

"Friendly" is a defining word - everything is completely relaxed, but also runs like clockwork. It is so relaxed that we wondered whether things we'd organised would happen (such as airport pickup and return, tours, cooking class), but everything was run perfectly.

We had a lunch and dinner in the town, but the food and service from the Village Retreat's restaurant was exemplary and well-priced - a great variety of western, Chinese and local favourites and local and Belgium beer, and wine and spirits.

It was hot whilst we were in Yangshuo, so outside dining was perfect. As soon as we sat down at an outside table, staff appeared with mosquito coils, a lamp to attach to the umbrella and menus. Breakfast was included - a choice of several including delicious banana pancakes, muesli and eggs+sausage.

The ground floor and rooftop decks were very comfortable, and offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains. But if you insist views of the River Li, you won't find them here as there is too much hill and greenery between the hotel and the river.

Our room was large and comfortable, with a stunning floor to ceiling window running the length of the bathroom, out on to an adjacent karst. Air conditioning was effective, the furniture slightly quirky. The only traveler who might be disappointed would be one expecting deep carpets and the antiseptic decor of international 5-star-hotel feel: the Yangshuo Village Retreat is more like staying in a friend's comfortable house.

On our final night, a guitar appeared and our two teenagers entertained some of the younger staff with some western songs, who then reciprocated with some local songs, with much laughter all-round - its that type of place.

I hope to return one day, which is a feeling I know my fellow travelers share.

Room Tip: End rooms with light on two sides were fabulous, but any rooms on the "karst" side have sp...

A nice, helpful, good English spoken staff. The hotel can arrange several sightseeing trips (and free transport service to the light show on the water). From the hotel you can rent bikes. Also with a guide if you might need tone for the first day(s). We had a comfortable, large room for 3. The hotel is outside of Yangshuo. In nighttime difficult to find in the dark. The restaurant serves western and chinese food (and Belgium beer!). Free inernet use and a good wifi connection. For use of credit cards you have to pay an extra percentage.

Best of this hotel was its staff members, always helpful and smiley. Rooms where nice but looked bigger on the Internet and were quite basic. We expected more for the price we paid. Nice views to the mountain but the building itself it is not charming or cozy at all, there was humidity spots in our room walls. Service is good thought, everything it´s clean and they speak very good english. It is nice that they get you best rates and info about activities too.

We found this a really great place to stay. What really impressed us was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. There also appeared to be high morale amongst the staff themselves. They seemed to enjoy each other’s company and they worked together like a family.
We received a very genuine, spontaneous welcome and an unforgettable farewell. We were really sorry to leave and we enjoyed our stay so much that we are returning later in the year.
This was also a great place to meet other travellers, in part because the hotel was neither too big nor too small.
We were given plenty of assistance with such things as information about local facilities and organisation of specific trips. The staff also always ensured that taxis did not overcharge. Our room was clean, tastefully decorated and quite spacious. The hotel restaurant provided a good variety of quality Chinese and Western food. The girls in the restaurant even helped us with our Chinese.
Both the owner-manager Gerd and his wife Jenny are very approachable and have excellent rapport with guests. They were patient with our many questions and requests. Gerd and Jenny lent a sympathetic ear to a couple of minor problems we had with our daytrips. They genuinely want their guests to have a happy, hassle-free holiday and they and their staff are keen to improve on a job they already do very well. Nothing seems a trouble to them.
Our stay in Yangshuo could not have been better. We certainly recommend the Yangshuo Village Retreat.

After negotiating our trip through China for 15 days, finding a person who understands exactly what you say, the first time (!), and not measuring your inexperience to exploit you, was truly an oasis in a desert. It is true, very recent residential development may have the potential to spoil the eastern view, but Gerd was very accommodating in changing rooms for a better view according to availability. The rooms are tastefully decorated, clean, with western facilities. Free WiFi, mosquito repellent, plus cold water dispensers, were also a blessing. The hotel is DEFINITELY not rundown. It was purposely built to recreate a certain era. The restaurant is of an absolutely high quality.

1. Multi-lingual Gerd leaves no room for misunderstanding.
2. The restaurant provides a tested menu and wine list, both western and Chinese.
3. Gerd knows all the tourist traps
4. He will guide you to the best spots for sightseeing
5. The hotel can arrange true-fare taxis, locally and to the airport (¥310 vs ¥500!)
6. The Chinese staff is spontaneously friendly.
7. Instead of cueing at the ticket office, the hotel arrange tickets, including free transport, at no extra charge, to the Impression Liu Sanjie.

I challenge anybody to find better value for money in Yangshuo!

Room Tip: Rooms on the left hand side of the corridors,on the upper floors have the best view.

We've been using TripAdvisor for years and advice/reviews from other travellers have always been a great help when booking hotels….until now. We went to Yangshuo last month and stayed at the Yangshuo Village Retreat based on the excellent feedback featured on TripAdvisor - when we booked it it was the number 1 hotel in Yangshuo.

If you are after a comfortable bed, good shower and a reasonably clean room, then you might not be disappointed with this hotel. The staff is also very friendly. The problem we had is that the reviews we read here implied that it was much more than a basic hotel.

It is in fact a very ugly hotel throughout. The furniture in our room was horrendous. Some reviewers call it "antique-style furniture that creates a delightfully non-standard atmosphere." when in reality it is just tacky. No charm. There is zero attention to details as well. In our room there was a big rounded mirror attached to a wall half its size. The garden, restaurant, reception and corridors are old and not very attractive.

It is not located in the centre of Yangshuo (we knew about it when we booked), which should be compensated by the views and the tranquility. Yes, you can see the mountains but there is also a lot of construction work (and noise) in the area spoiling the view.

I wanted to post this review so that other travellers who are considering staying at this hotel can do so knowing what to expect. I think I would rather have spent an extra £20-£30 a night to stay somewhere better. I am not saying 'don't stay there', but when you make your decision bear in mind that this is just a basic hotel with a good shower, very comfortable bed and friendly staff, not a cosy and charming retreat.

Don't allow the number 1 position of a hotel on tripadvisor and its reviews mislead you when you prefer a very particular design style of your own, because while these do let you know about the quality of service and amenities, cleanliness and location, tastes and needs of people differ which makes the world so wonderfully unique and diverse. Visit the hotel's website as well, and you would have seen that your style may have differed from over 95% of guests who all really appreciate the luxurious feel and comfort of Classic European furnishings in the rooms while the classic design features and 'old' Chinese artwork in the common areas, old paintings, carved woodwork and vases offer a feel for the history of the area you are visiting and add a lot of charm to a retreat in our as well as the far majority of people's opinion.

I visited the village retreat based on the reviews on tripadvisor and have to say they where right. The service is very good, always friendly and speaks good english. They serve international food in the restaurant and outside on the terasse. It of high uali and very good taste. My native chinese partner was happily surprised of the quality of the local food as well.

Rooms are in excelent quality not only for a more remote region in china. The western bed relaxed us well after our daytrips. :)

Additionally we where allowed to be the first ones trying the brand new and big jacuzzi on the rooftop(4 people would easily fit). Even so being a little windy that evening the wooden walls seperating the area from the rest of the area gave a very good protection. the light effects in the warm water, the massage jets and the plants around and the great view on the typical mountain scenery complimented the evening with a good bottle of red wine.

The location of the hotel was very good for us as we arrived with a rental car. Not too close to the city to be noisy and not too far to not go every evening to the major tourist areas for dinner bars shopping or massage. Even without an own car the hotel provides every needed service to reach the city by scooter bike or taxi service. The way back to the hotel is also easy as yangshuo is used to tourists and hotel the taxi drivers find the hotel easily and cheap :).

All in all i would choose this hotel again if i come again i enjoy remembering the time i spend in yangshuo and the hotel had a great share in that experience.

Thanks a lot
