“Really Nice place”
Reviewed May 10, 2012

This place is relaxing and enjoyable. New bikes and great facilities. Lots of solid activities to engage in and a very helpful staff who can set it all up.

I definitely recommend this place highly, but not a full 5-star spot. The bathroom layout is a bit odd. The location is central but not particularly isolated or looking on the more stunning karst views of Yangshuo.

The little family run lodge has cheery rooms tastefully decorated without the typical chinese dirty carpets and smelly curtains. Everything is clean and in working condition. Much better than any 4 star tourist hotel and excellent value for money!
The helpful and friendly staff organised several outings for us.
The roof top restaurant Luna serves well prepared western dishes in a lovely setting (indoors/al fresco) with a view of Moon Hill. The front yard invites to hang out in the shade.

Due to the vicinity of Moon Hill there is some noise from arriving tourist buses during the day but very little compared to the humdrum in Yangshuo itself.

Though I thought the hotel was lovely, I did feel a bit deceived about its location. It is located in a small village community, but it is a community that receives tons of tourists and buses coming in and out during the day. I was there over a holiday weekend so perhaps it was worse than usual, but I checked out a couple of other inns, and though the village inn overall has nicer rooms and in general a nicer feel, the other inns were in quieter spots (aka no buses and honking horns).

The view at their restaurant is spectacular, but thought the breakfast was just alright (though the fresh orange juice was great!) I arrived back a bit late one night and thought I would just grab a bowl of fried noodles with vegetables for dinner. I know they are an Italian restaurant, but I thought their Chinese food should be okay (I am in China). I was served a pile of Ramen Noodles, which was really disappointing. If I wanted that for dinner I would have stopped at any convenient store and picked up my own box for 5RMB and filled it with hot water.

Aside from those few problems, like I said, the inn is really nice. The room was clean and I loved all the decorations they had around the hotel. Also, they responded to emails I sent very quickly and organized my boat trip from Guilin to Yangshuo, which made it very easy to get there.

Room Tip: Stayed in one of the loft rooms which was very nice. However, if guests decide to sit downstairs and...

We spent a long weekend here in October with a group of friends, so we had the townhouse in the back all to ourselves. The Inn was lovely, right in the middle of the little village with a great front garden, where we spent our mornings eating breakfast and the evenings drinking beer under the lanterns. The Inn also has a great view of the surrounding mountains and the village is great to wander through. We rented bikes from the Inn and we all loved our spacious rooms with tons of detail. The staff are very accomodating and even helped us order food in one night from a nearby restaurant. Highly recommended.

I have been fortunate to travel to many places and to stay in a variety of places. The Village Inn would have to be one of the best overall anywhere, but certainly the staff would have to be the friendlest staff I have ever come across. From all those in the reception/front of house to the waitresses, both morning and evening, they were charming and certainly went out of their way to assist us, and make our stay enjoyable. The rooms, beds (best!!), building, views, eco friendly approach, quiet surrounds, food were all features. The roof top restaurant/bar was a great place to return to in the evening. Would certainly recommend to those who prefer a family run guest house and who want to be a little way away from the crowds. It was a great place to relax for a view days after some frantic days in China and do some things around Yangshuo.

Room Tip: Not directly below the restaurant

our family stayed here for 4 nights in the main hotel, on arrival we were welcomed with hot ginger tea by the super efficient and friendly staff ; the beds were declared the most comfortable in China by our 2 girls. A delicious breakfast was served outside with freshly squeezed juices each morning, before we enjoyed a multitude of different activities arranged with the help of the staff. We have very fond memories of sitting in the roof top bar each evening with a glass of wine discussing the days events, we particularly enjoyed the cooking and calligraphy lessons as well as a guided cycle through the nearby villages.

Room Tip: stay in the main hotel

Location, service, facilities, breakfast and price were all fantastic! The team on the ground were brilliant and incredibly accommodating.

Sadly, however, our room was a little damp (in the converted barn annex) and rather too noisy for my liking as the village and the staff got going outside our bedroom window around 6am.

Also, dare I say it, the pasta at Luna which gets rave reviews was average the night we had it. That said the pizza, salad and anti-pasti were all superb and the view was second to none.

Next time I go back to Yangshuo I will stay at their sister hotel (the Mountain Retreat) which is down by the water.

Room Tip: I'd avoid ground-floor in the barn conversion and probably stick to the main hotel if at all pos...

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us. Life in a Chinese village means getting up early, though our Farmhouse offers nice protection from outside activity with it's double mud brick walls and solid wood doors. That said, the ever-present roosters, neighbors and pushcart traffic can wake a light sleeper. Our visiting Italian Chef, Mauro just spent two weeks with our local chefs on new dishes and improved cooking skills, so we believe we still have the best Italian food in SW China, though the new preparation takes time to make perfect.
Finally, with successive days of rain, the Farmhouse, like any traditional building, can feel a bit damp. With our antique room fan, lots of screened windows and even an A/C, it soon goes away once you're in the room. When you come back to stay at Yangshuo Mountain Retreat, give Village Inn and particularly Luna another try, we promise you won't be disappointed.
Cheers!
