Reminded us a lot of Zion Natioanl Park in Utah. Huge rock formations in the middle of the desertt. Woth the trip becasue then you go view the Great Wall and the Western Caves.

It was great to get out and see the formations. New facilities make it eaiser to see and get around.

After being in Zhangye Danxia, Yadan is not so interesting. It's a long ride, 1hr from Yumeng Guan.

If you care about seeing natural landscape this is a must-do. The Ya Dan landscape was a lake about 12,000 years ago and since then has eroded into amazing landscapes of sandstone. The journey to the area takes you through more or less stony desert, rather than sand. We actually saw a black wolf eating something just off the road. There are 2 entry fees--1 to get into the general nature reserve area (this lets you see the Han wall and the Yumen gate) and a 2nd to be shown around the Ya Dan geological forms--you can't go in by yourself even if you bring your own car. Unfortunately, all explanations (spoken and written) are in Chinese so bring a translator or use your imagination when you view the rocks.
You can join a tour bus from Dunhuang for around 80RMB or take a taxi for around 360RMB. Entry fees add another approx 200RMB per person. Still worth it.

It took us 2 hrs to get there (We asked the hostel to arrange a driver+car for us and it's $300 round trip including Jade Pass/Han Great Wall) and we arrived around 6:00AM however; we didn't check the weather before we go. It was cold and raining; so we only spent about 20 minutes over there! (WHAT A SHAME/WASTE) The clouds were thick so we couldn't see sunrise!! The park is massive and amazing. Just remember to check weather forecast before going!!!
