The scenery of the mountains is unrivaled, the landscape is very dramatic. We decided to ascent using the Eastern cable car and descended the following day using the Western cable car.
You need to be very fit if you think that want to climb the mountain from the base - be warned!!
It is amazing that the area has been entirely paved and almost everywhere you go is either steps up or down, it can be jarring on the knees.
Also try avoid the major tour route, we found these paths to be very busy. The Chinese tourists also get much pleasure out of screaming off almost every viewing point - the Echo Wall does not echo with all the noise yet they persist!
For people looking for tranquil nature, think again. If you are looking for breathtaking scenery that is quite unique, make a point of getting here.

Spectacular views. Nothing like watching ancient Chinese scroll paintings come to life!! Each vista is different. The sea of clouds that swim between the peaks are breath-taking. Just be sure your camera is well juice because you will not stop taking pictures!! Wear comfortable shoes as there are many, many steps to climb (and descend from).

If you love bonzais, also visit the Bao Family Garden. It is on the way to Huangshan.

We have seen a lot of the scenic areas of China and this definitely did not disappoint. We were very lucky with the weather, so we got to see everything. Be prepared to do a lot of walking and stairs, but it is so worth the AMAZING scenery!
Go there while you can!!!

Hungshan is definitely one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world; amazing granite peaks, canyons, forests, twisted pines, waterfalls and streams, bizarre rock formations, mist playing with the light, birds and monkeys, long beautiful walks and majestic views.
If you are fit, trained and have very comfy shoes I do suggest you walk up the eastern steps (4 to 5 hours), that are maybe a little less scenic but far less crowded and much shorter than the steeper, jam-packed western steps. Walking down the western steps took me 7 hours (including one hours stuck in the crowds at the top).
If you are not fit take the cableways - it is a really long, hard, incessant walk up the mountain.
And if you can try to walk up, down and around in the mornings and evenings when tour bus groups are not everywhere and you can truly enjoy the wonders of this place.
However as many other reviews say it is not easy, not cheap and occasionally ugly.
Getting there is complicated: 1 bus from Tunxi - nearest town with station and airport (¥ ¥ ¥ ), entrance fee (¥ ¥ ¥ ¥), one bus to the base of the mountain (¥ ), cableways (¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ), thousand of steps, Chinese is the only language spoken, poor and confusing signage, useless maps.
Prices are ridiculous (for China) for everything: water, food, snacks, maps, wind jackets, tatty souvenirs.
The wide area at the top of the mountain is a proper, ugly tourist trap - spoilt, crowded, unbearably noisy, full of hops, bad restaurants and massively overpriced and mediocre hotels.
Avoid the 'Guest Greeting Pine', 'Jade Screen' station and the ghastly and sprawling Tangkou village at the base of the mountain.
And always keep in mind that the Chinese attitude to nature and outdoor activities is completely different from Western attitudes; loud techno music, walking in heels, shouting, loudspeakers, pushing and trashing are normal and acceptable.
