Xihai Hotel
Ranked #3 of 493 Hotels in Huangshan
Reviewed May 10, 2014

Stayed in the New Wing of the hotel. Thoughts as follows:
- Expensive given the oligopoly status of the hotel up in the mountain. Price is about 2.5 times that of Crowne Plaza Huangshan. Much needed leg massage at lobby costs about 350rmb for 45 minutes and tips absolutely is expected.
- Room. Nothing to wave about other than declaration are minimalist and new. Deluxe room with balcony on 4th floor is smallish at about 20 plus sqm. in-room wireless internet not working on floor at time of stay. In room ventilation is merely the fan blowing air, neither heat nor AC provided. Both are desirable due to the volatile temperature up the moutain.
- Service. Check-in was slow. Amenities such as toothbrush is not offered. When contacted concierge, was told toothbrush is not provided due to "environmental friendless"....... When requested an additional towel, was told it has to be exchanged with a used one. No instant coffee in room. Hmmmm,
- Food in restaurant. Palatable but not missing it.

If you are after a unique experience of staying on Huangshan, this is a tolerable. It's newly built (at least for the wing I stayed in) after all. Otherwise, stay at the bottom of the mountain for 1/3 the price and thrice the creature comfort

Room Tip: 1) Bring your own hygience kit like toothbrush and paste as hotel does not offer it. 2) Bring war...

If you ever decide to go to Huangshan don't hesitate just go ahead and book a room there! The rooms are very nice, but I'm guessing there are nicer in the recently built wing of the hotel, (which is exactly where we stayed) so just make sure that this is where you are staying. English is not very well spoken by the staff of the hotel, but there always be that one person among them who'll come for rescue. Food is fine, tad bit overpriced in the restaurant but still fine, you don't mind paying for so much after you see poor sherpa guys climbing up those millions stairs fully loaded with what you're about to eat for dinner.

Also, there is no annoying crowd of people flocking around right in front of the hotel doors, (like in front of the Beihai hotel, for instance) and chances are you won't stumble over someone's tent. Maybe for that we actually have to blame public holidays, and on any other given day this horrible crowd wouldn't be there. But anyways, choose xihai over beihai. At night after a long day of hiking come outside and it'll be just you and peaceful serenity free from any motion and disturbance, and a full moon if you are lucky. And also, not under ANY ANY ANY circumstances go there on Chinese public holidays, or those minutes of tranquility at night would be the only ones you'll get.
All in all, the experience of staying there was very pleasant, like I said don't give it a second thought.

I stayed in the new wing, which was excellent, great bathroom, comfy bed and the evening meal was a very western orientated Chinese. Not bad.

I did get very excited about seeing the 82 chateau lafite Rothschild for 780rmb only to discover all the bottles are empty and just for show!

Otherwise I'd say it's a great place to stay.

After the long trek up the mountain which was difficult as paths were not marked as well as us foreigners would have liked, a very nice group of Chinese helped us get into the area and my minimal Mandarin helped the rest of the way. I agree with another review that not enough info is provided but be SURE to get an English map at the bottom of the hill which we forgot to do but thankfully ran into our Chinese helpers. Also, refer to blogs that shared much information. Otherwise just follow signs to West Sea - XiHai if that helps. The hotel is quite a hike to the top, cannot imagine this on a warm, sunny day. This is a very nice hotel and I'm pretty picky. Clean, well maintained and met our every need. They provide jackets in the room for the sunrise hike (which we did not use as we weren't sure the cleaning policy for them) and the much needed flashlight also. There is a small but expensive bar for a drink and a nicer than I expected restaurant that offers both Chinese and Western options in bold pictures. We opted for some of both but do go for the Sweet and Sour Chicken if your craving western Chinese food, it was delicious. The dumplings were a little soggy but everything else was very good.
Our wait staff was helpful although struggled with the language which is no big deal since we live in Shanghai and are used to it. A manager also stepped in a few times which helped. It was a bit pricey but as a hotel restaurant you expect that. Rooms were comfortable and warm and provided everything you need (hair dryer, soap, shampoo). The location was great and staff was good at pointing out the sunrise locations. The only complaints we had was with the check in service. It took forever and I was the only one standing at the counter. At first the young lady couldn't locate my reservation until she was finally helped by another employee. Then she seemed to be bothered by others 3 or 4 times to make cards for other people. I would say it took us about 20 min to check in. Also, there was not information sent to us regarding the 500rmb CASH deposit that was required. Thankfully all of our travelers had cash but that could take someone by surprise. Check out was no better. About 5 employees stood around staring at the one girl who was working. Extremely inefficient and this was off season!! We have learned to deal with poor service in China so no big surprise, just frustrating. It didn't ruin our experience on this beautiful mountain.

The problem with Huangshan is that there isn't enough info to prepare you for it. For example it isn't a flat mountain top so that it matters how you ascend the mountain, and you could end up trekking for 3 hrs to your hotel. We were lucky ours was only 20 mins walk away from the North gate ( Taiping rope way) and about 40 mins from the East or Yongyu rope way.
Even as far as the hotel is concerned we got a room in the North wing which is of a lower standard presumably since everyone on this page seems to rave about the size of rooms they must have stayed in the new South wing. Service is excellent and everyone I smiling and responsive.
We weren't lucky with the weather since it rained all day.
One piece of advice - carry only what you absolutely need and use a rucksack. !!!

After discussing with a guide at the foothill hotel, we booked this hotel for its location. The price was expected since it is a mountain resort. It turned out to be more than what we have expected-especially the decor, it is splendid. The room was decent with all amenities. Food was OK, though a bit pricey. Breakfast about RMB 50/pax, lunch/dinner about RMB 70-100. After seeing the porter carrying the goods, we realised the cost. Front desk service was efficient and always with smiling faces.

The rooms in the South Wing are new and furnished to a relatively high standard, but still nothing compared to a luxury hotel. The food in the restaurant is ridiculously overpriced for very mediocre food, compared to other nearby hotels. In terms of location, I think Beihai is slightly better situated for the sun rise.
