Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 3, 2009

My trip to Tierra Atacama this year was the second time I´ve been there. The Desert town of San Pedro de Atacama is a spectacular place. The scenic landscape is breathtaking, the air is fresh, the culture is interesting and the atmosphere is completely relaxed. I stayed at a relatively small boutique hotel called Tierra Atacama. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are very comfortable, the design of the hotel is modern with a retro feel that compliments the surrrounding environment perfectly. The food is great, the bar is open and the service in general is high. It provides a memorable outdoor holiday getaway.

I visited the Atacama with family, which included one 9-year old. Right after check-in we met with the hotel's excursion planner who had four days of excursions scheduled for us within 1/2 hour. Through a series of questions she provided us with a number of ideas from which we made our choices. Each excursion was perfect for us. We hiked, visited the El Tatio geysers and local villages, the salt flats and Valley of the Moon. The excursions are a must. Salvador is an excellent and enthusiastic tour guide.

The hotel itself is an architectural delight. Rooms are simply furnished, but wonderfully comfortable, and each has a view of the volcano Licancabur.

Breakfasts were buffet style with a selection of healthy foods. Lunches and dinner were full service and the menus changed daily, with at least three offerings at each meal. Every meal we had at the hotel was delicious and served with fabulous local wines. The Malbec is the best!

Large fire pits are on the perimeter of the restaurant. On a couple of occasions we enjoyed appetizers and wine/cocktails on large comfy pillows while star gazing.

The service was amazing. The hotel's general manager was in the lobby, every time we walked through, chatting with guests and making sure everyone was happy.

The spa offers a wide variety of services. My facial and body scrub were the perfect way to end a too short vacation - and very reasonably priced.

We stayed three nights, but I would recommend four or five because there is so much to see in the area.

We came to Tierra Atacama as a last minute vacation as our plans to ski in Chile did not work out due to lack of snow. We were uncertain about this destination as we are two families travelling with young children, ages 5 and 9. This was one of the best vacations we have had as a family. The hotel is truly 5 star. The design/architecture of the hotel is incredible. It is elegant, comfortable and beautiful, without any pretense. It blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape and is completely unimposing, yet sophisticataed and inviting. The staff are incredible and available to tend to your every need. The food and service is truly top-notch, ie. as good, if not better, than any 5 star property in the U.S. Finally, the destination is spectacular. I had read some other reviews prior to booking here, as well as having reviewed the resort's website. I can honestly say that neither come close to doing this place justice. There are so many great excursions, with small groups led by extremely knowledgeable and well-trained guides. We did some tremendous hikes through varied and interesting landscape, that were breathtakingly beautiful and lots of fun. The kids did great and enjoyed everything. They were able to do all the excursions we did, including hiking, running down the sand dunes, visiting the hot springs, horseback riding and more. Needless to say, we were all very sorry to leave and look forward to returning soon. If you are looking for a truly different, awesome, romantic getaway, this is the place.......and bring the kids, they'll love it, too.

We chose Tierra over explora because we wanted a volcano view and we do not ride horses. We were not disappointed by our choice.

Room was nice and comfortable. No compliants.

Lunch was usually very good when taken at the hotel, as expected less so when eaten on hikes. Dinner could use some improvement, but not ineatable. Was nice to sit by the outdoor fires after dinner. Cocktail were also very good - bartender very capable. On hikes most mornings or slept in, so never had breakfast. Food in general poorer quality than the meals at explora patagonia but only slightly so. Food not great at either place.

Staff at the hotel good. However, some servers did seem to expect tips at the end of the visit which was kind of uncomfortable because you do not the same server everytime and they are not all excellent. Only a minor problem because overall the staff is pretty good. The tipping issue was not a problem at explora patagonia as a comparsion. The staff did not act like they expected tipping at the end of the visit in patagonia although we did include gratuity on the final bill.

hikes/excursions were all excellent, and the guides were all good to great. Especially Renaldo who was very good, and a german guide (forgot his name) who very informative. Victor ok.

As chileans we don't travel much in our country, because it is cheaper to travel abroad most of the times. So we catch a good discount and we went to visit our breath taking desert. We had such a nice time, the hotel was splendid, and so was all the staff, from the cleaning lady to the manager. they made everything they culd to make us happy. The tours were grate, with unbelivable guides and picnic. I catch myself dreaming to return there, seriously. I think they have rise their prices a bit now, but still is the best hotel ever. It is not in the town, you have to walk five minutes or take a realy fine bike from the hotel to get there. They also take you in their van at some hours. To me, being far was best to relax. Love the l'occitane amenities and la fette chocolats!

We have chosen this hotel based on the reviews on this site and correspondence with Fiona Martin, Sales & Marketing Manager, who answered all our numberous questions - hopefully, for you and Fiona, some made it into their website's FAQ section.

Most of our queries were related to the excursion package. After considering all the + of the "all in" package, we decided that for us, the best is to book accomodation with breakfast and to get guaranteed excursions with a local tour operator. The excursions by the hotel are a shared service extended to guests in accordance with their interests and logistical availabilities. We have met their group of four with a lovely and smiling guide at the Guatin canyon and have no doubt that their excursions are top notch.

Our aim was to go up to the Salar of Talar, the Altiplanic Lagoons, the Arco Iris valley, the Puritama hotsprings and on horseback from the Rancho Cactus to the Paso de los Toros and through the Valle de la Muerte.

As you will notice by our pictures, we liked the hotel and the spa. Regretfully, with our excursion program, we did not have enough time to extensively enjoy the spa. We recommend to plan half a day of leisure to watch the Andes from one of the chairs along the swimming pool, alternating with some jacuzzy and massage.

What you need to know is that the hotel is about 25 minutes on foot from the village center. The road might be hot during the day and is completely dark during the night.
We tried several restaurants downtown, but could not recommend any. We had four meals at the hotel. One of the chefs is creative and the other is getting there, given Paula's strong leadership.

We have two recommendations to the hotel:

- Breakfast is from 8 to 10, which is rather late for active guests. One quarter to 8, we were able to get items from the buffet and even eggs and still make it for the excursion pick-up at 8. But this was really tight. Other guests as well showed up before 8 and we think this would be an actual enhancement to officially advance breakfast hours of half an hour.

- The way to the rooms is not lit well enough, especially near the entrance to the lounge, the path being ecologically stoned, with some rough angles here and there.

Hope you will enjoy your stay!

Dear Mr K;
I am so glad you enjoyed your stay at Tierra Atacama after all those questions! And thanks for the feedback - we're looking at changing the breakfast times and will certainly take steps to improve the outdoor lighting (without making it so bright you can't see the wonderful night skies!) We appreciate your having taken the time to write on Trip Advisor, and hope that you will visit us again in the future...

We stayed at Tierra Atacama for 4 nights in February.

The premises are impeccable: the architecture is stunning and very respectful of the nature surrounding. The rooms are very nice, big enough, and the outdoor shower was a very pleasant experience.
I would have appreciated having a couple of chairs outdoor instead of this enclosed area, since the views are sublime and this structure unfortunately hide part of it. If I would to sit outside, I would certainly not turn my back to it, as the orientation of the sitting area suggests.
Maybe risking another suggestion: why not a little coffee machine in there? It is always nice to be able to take our coffee while getting ready for the day !

The excursions were fantastic, and the quality of guides/ drivers was great. A good thing that someone sit with us on arrival and help us deciding on the excursions, since unfortunately, almost no pictures are available to guide us better in our choice. Nevertheless, this lady was definitely very good and truly helpful and the excursions chosen were very well suited to our tastes.

Food is good, if somewhat limited in choice, served by attentive staff. A good suggestion would also be to teach them basic english, since communication was not always easy...but, this add to the spirit of adventure, I guess.

The manager is a great guy, very much present on the premises, and genuinely interested in knowing our opinion of the place: a sure sign of high professionnalism.
We had a little incident during one of our excursion, and as soon as he got informed, he came to see us and made sure we were fine.

All in all, a great experience. Just a few adjustments would turn it into an outstanding one !!!
