Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 13, 2014

My husband and I traveled to Chile to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We fell in love with Chile and hope to explore the south on our next visit (Patagonia). We spent 3 nights in Tierra Atacama and really enjoyed it. The hotel is beautiful and just blends into the desert surroundings - the views are breathtaking and the excursions are great. I would suggest to review the menu of excursions available in advance of your visit - there's lots to do and see depending on your level of interest. I had a massage at the spa which was quite lovely - the only complaint was that there was some construction going on in spa, right above my massage room so it was difficult to just relax given all the banging - but i believe this is why they were having a promotion of 15% massages. Perhaps better if they scheduled massages when the work was not going on. The massage itself was wonderful and the spa facilities are beautiful. On booking the hotel, I made mention that it was our anniversary and on the first night they sent us a bottle of champagne and cheese and crackers,which was lovely. On making the reservation, they said we could have organize a couples hot tub overlooking the mountains but upon check in they never mentioned it I also never asked as I hadn't seen the secluded hot tub until the morning we were leaving the hotel. The hotel staff are friendly and very accommodating. We really enjoyed the food and the wine and our tour guides.
My one recommendation to the hotel, given the one hour travel to/from airport, i would suggest that the drivers have a cooler with water to provide guests with, especially given the heat.
We enjoyed our stayed and our hike to Toco!!!!

I read all the reviews carefully before booking this hotel and looked at a Relais and Chateaux hotel nearby before choosing Tierra Atacama (in part because we stayed in their sister hotel Tierra Patagonia which is incredible). Firstly i would like to say a huge thank you to the head manager Juan and to Max the head tour operator (negative reviews about him are totally unjustified). I stayed in the hotel with my wife and son and i can't say that we were the easiest of customers as my wife wanted to do some individual tours (like sand boarding etc) and Max was absolutely amazing in organizing everything for us.

I think that perhaps people have some rather 'pernickty' comments to make about the hotel because they probably think that the hotel is 5 star, have paid a lot and so everything should be much better especially the service at meal times (really friendly staff and they try hard but sometimes it looked as if they were slightly clueless). In my mind the hotel is an excellent 4 star hotel, perhaps 5 star without some of the service that you would receive at the Ritz in Paris or the Four Season in New York.

So back to reviewing the hotel. We had a wonderful time and want to say a really big thank you to everyone there. Amazing organization of all the tours, great drivers and guides. Wonderful rooms (I would definetly recommend the lower rooms on the left hand side which are much more private), delicious food and stylish spa and swimming pool. We really didn't want to leave when we had to.

The best trip we did was to the Salar de Tarra which is a beautiful wilderness, with lots of flamingoes and lunch. It is quite high up at 4,900 metres and so consider that before you choose that one. There are also less people there that you would see at the Giesers, Hot springs etc.

Thank you Tierra Atacama for giving us a holiday of lifetime.

It's a shame that the front desk staff and the dining room wait staff aren't better trained, as this hotel is located in a lovely place for seeing the natural beauty of Chile's North.
Good things: the food is very good (an important thing for us), the guides and drivers do a fine job of planning the excursions and executing them, the rooms are OK, there is no feeling that other people have signed up for a trip and therefore you can't go (they seem to have enough vehicles/guides/drivers to cover their needs).
Unfortunate things: The desk can't/won't make change so that you can tip people as they do things for you --- they prefer that you tip in one payment at the end of your stay, while I prefer that my tip go to exactly the person who helped me.
The dining room wait staff get flustered when there's a heavy load in the room, and wait times get too long.
The desk staff need training so that they know local church times, know how to get airline boarding passes, etc. The basics. Whether you can get things done by the desk depends entirely on which person you happen to get.

Dear BC111;
We appreciate your comments on Trip Advisor and are glad you seem to enjoy your stay overall. We have noted the comments regarding the dining room service and the reception. We try to be as flexible as possible with our guests requests and we apologize that you were not encouraged to tip specifically according to the person you felt deserved this recognition. We will work on this aspect as well as the other ones you have noted with our Reception team.
We're pleased you enjoyed the excursions and the food, thank you for those positive comments!

This is a very nice hotel architecturally, and has a rustic style which fits with the desert surroundings. The food was not great although I stuck with the vegetarian options which were better. We arrived on Christmas Eve and they put on a show and there was a nice buffet (probably the nicest of our stay here). All the dinner staff were lovely. The tours were good and the guides were lovely and good fun. I had an injury from the previous hotel and Huan who is a trained nurse helped clean my infected wound! The Atacama flats were beautiful and they take you at times where you don't see many people. We particularly enjoyed the hot springs hike, the cycle to the Salt Lake and Toco which we all suffered from altitude sickness but was great to get to the 5600m summit. Daniello was very patient with us climbing this and offered us tea at the top! The Atacama Desert is a truly beautiful place.

Room Tip: We had a family room which I would only recommend for families with young children. Note there is no...

Dear Alison B;
Thank you for your lovely comments - we'll make sure our great team of guides and other staff members see them so they know how their efforts are appreciated. We work hard to try to make sure all our guests have the best time possible and feel very much at home and part of the family while they're with us, so it's good to hear that you enjoyed the excursions and spending time with our guides. The Atacama is indeed an amazing place and it sounds like you made the most of the opportunity to visit not only the highlights but also the places off the beaten track.
We hope to welcome you back in the future!
Warmest regards

Some aspects of Tierra Atacama are great, particularly the excursions, which can be magnificent. I write this on the day we went out to the Altiplanic lagoons, a trip of a lifetime, accompanied by a knowledgeable, interested guide. But as I think I remarked last time, you pay luxury hotel prices here for somewhere distinctly average as a hotel. Food is hit and miss and the great dining room staff can't make up for that; drinks that should be cold (white wine) are served warm; rooms are average, with major problems if you want to keep them cool - I had to bully my way to getting them to stop heating the room up whilst I was at dinner each evening. Mineral water with gas runs out... I could go on. In the end, the place pulls through, partly because of the great staff, who I really like, but mostly for the excursions. But there are now other top end options in San Pedro and I fear I would now probably start looking at those....

Dear MontrachetJ;
We appreciate your comments as always, and thank you for staying with us again. We're glad you enjoyed your stay in San Pedro and particularly our excursions - we realize that this is probably the most important part of a stay in the Atacama desert and do try to make sure that our guides are experienced, informative and entertaining, as well as capable of dealing with safety issues should any arise. Staffing is always an issue in San Pedro de Atacama, common to all the properties there, we'll keep working on that in the meantime as we continue to do our best to ensure our guests enjoy their time with us.
Thank you once again for taking the time to post on Trip Advisor.
Warmest regards

We stayed on an all inclusive package for four nights. Our arrival was after dark so we were treated to the incredible night sky and beautifully lit restaurant on arrival. The hotel is somewhat rustic, but luxury rustic. Service is great, though not quite as good as the Patagonia version of the same hotel chain. There are two menus, look to the alternative if the main menu is too adventurous, or if you desperately want a steak!

Of the outings, we highly recommend the geysers, the salt flat lagoon, the hot spring hike and the visit to the observatory. The high altitude and the intense heat can make some of the hikes tough but the hotel is well aware of the risks and does everything possible to mitigate an

I agree with many other posts--excursions had to be picked within an hour of being there. Not all excursions were offered and explained. Top 3 excursions were pushed on us. Salt flats excursion was not worth it--we were forced to leave before sunset. Wasn't that the point?

Rooms were ok but ac kept switching to heat in the middle of the night. HEAT? It's hot enough there. It took two nights and 3 complaints to finally fix the heat problem.

Nice porch but where are the chairs? Dirty cushion on a stone bench in the hot sun?? No thanks.

Star gazing was at a house--not out in the open desert as we thought. The guide who did the star gazing only knew a script--couldn't really answer any other English questions --couldn't sway from the 6 objects he was supposed to show us.

We booked stargazing for dec 24th. Upon booking no one told us there was a big Christmas Eve celebration that night. Why wouldn't you tell guests this???

Last we had a bird fly into our window and die. The bird was removed from our porch but the bloody splatter remained for three
days and was still there when we
left. We reported it twice.

The good was great.
