Altiplanico Atacama
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 2, 2013

I loved the Altiplanico's architecture and landscaping, the hotel is made out of separate adobe buildings with thatched roofs, each with beautiful personalised detailing making each ( building) room different. Most rooms are one storey, some have a roof terrace, each room has its own very private covered outdoor seating space. The Rooms are very comfortable well insulated( by using local construction techniques) and don't have the intrusion and the noise created by modern facilities such as Air Conditioning, Televisions, telephones etc. The landscaping around the buildings is very creative and delightful with stones, sand, pebbles, and local green plants. The swimming pool and the spaces around are in character with the atmosphere of peace and quiet, but be warned water is freezing!
Breakfast is very good and plentiful, should one have early morning excursions they prepare a breakfast bag. Food in the restaurant is also good but very expensive. WI-FI is available in the public areas as well as two PC's from where one can print boarding passes. Service can be a bit slow but everybody is very kind and friendly.
The Atacama dessert is breathtakingly beautiful, it has some of the most beautiful landscapes one can imagine. Nights are so clear, ideal for star gazing. The town San Pedro de Atacama itself is rather too touristy and very disappointing.
Hotel Altiplanico is about 10 minutes walk to the town, the walk is uninteresting on an open dusty road, probably too much with the very strong sun at midday perhaps a transport facility should be available? There are bikes available for hire ( not cheap)

All build in adobe, the hotel very friendly with the environment. The room was very spacious, comfortable and clean, with no distractions such as TV or Wi-Fi, which I appreciated in a place as mystical as San Pedro de Atacama. I enjoyed the breakfast, no big extravagances but all delicious. I had lunch a couple of times and also very delicious. If you go out early on a tour you get a bag with a snack for breakfast and a thermos of coca tea if you will be going as high as 4.500 Mts. over the sea level.
The pool is very nice, you have to be brave because the water is very cold, and there was no service at the pool, so we had to go to the bar for drinks.
There is Wi-Fi and computers, to print what you want, in the lobby and the front desk people are very friendly
Loved the hotel, would go back to it again and will recommend it to my friends who would be travelling to that place.

Room Tip: Rooms with access to the pool and its gardens

I stayed in this hotel as part of a tour package, but it certainly wasn't worth what I see as the average price on this site! The premise of "Eco-friendly" is one I applaud, but many places, this one included, seem to use this designation as an excuse for sub-par facilities. Some of my gripes: they only had email in the lobby, (why? Internet hurts the environment?), the lighting in the bathroom was dim, the mirror too far away (if you respect the desert traditions you won't wear makeup?) the outdoor shower had no hot water (which makes it unusable during shoulder season), there is no ceiling fan (the only windows that open are inadequate for good ventilation - plus our tiny bedroom window had a broken mechanism), and the towels were in horrible condition, not to mention that they weren't changed as they should be. Overall, I really liked the looks and "feel" of this hotel, but they need to keep up with the times, and keep up with their maintenance program.

We recently spent the Easter break in San Pedro de Atacama at the Hotel Altiplanico. The hotel is nice, the 'Adobe' buildings are good, warm and comfortable. We had two rooms close to each other for our family of 4.

The facilities are sparse, No tea/coffee facility in room, small bar, not fitness centre, nice pool area (although the water was too cold to swim despite warm days. Lighting is poor in the rooms and there is no A/C or fans should it be hot...

Overall I would give the hotel a good to very good rating. The one thing that lets it down was the service. We spent an afternoon by the pool, which has a nice bar area that was not attended. We enquired at the main bar and was told that it was open, but a waitress was nowhere to be found. After a full 5 minutes she was found and we placed our order. It took more than half an hour for the drinks to arrive, and when they did they were wrong. Disappointing...!

We alos had a early morning tour organised (4:30am departure), so we had arranged for a packed breakfast to be made, as per the Hotels instructions. Unfortunately this was not waiting for us the following morning...when we enquired as to what had happened later that afternoon, we were told that we had made a mistake, and had not placed an order?! Disappointing!!!

Overall, as I say the Hotel is once, well priced...a good family destination if you are visiting San Pedro. Unfortunately Poor service is letting the place down. This seems to be a trend in Chile...

I liked the hotel. All hotels are expensive in San Pedro for what they offer, so I wasn't expecting much for the price. However, the bed was comfortable, and there was hot water. Wifi only in the lobby. Bikes for rent, but can cheaper in town. Small pool that is cold. Staff was friendly and spoke English. Safe 10 minutes walk to town, just need a flashlight at night. I'd recommend it.

This hotel is a great base in San Pedro de Atacama. It is about a 10 minute walk into the town and is also on the (dirt) road to other interesting sites in the area. The rooms were individual adobe type huts. They were comfortable if a dark and the lighting in the room was poor. However, as a base it was great. The restaurant served good food at a reasonable price and the packed breakfasts were very good especially for those early morning excursions to other sites in the area. The hotel was very secure and it has a good (if chilly) swimming pool. Surprisingly, internet and wi-fi access in the hotel was good given its location and made planning future trips easy.
The staff were friendly and helpful and all spoke English. I visited a couple of other hotels in the town and the Altiplanico was the best. There are other more exclusive hotels but they are further out and the whole point of going to the town is to enjoy something of its night life.
You should take a torch as the streets outside the hotel are not lit and the surface of the roads is dirt (and rough stones).

The rooms are adequate but there aren't any fans and the rooms get very hot. We were there at the end of January and it was probably the hottest and driest place we have ever been to and we have been the Sahara!! There was one small window in the bedroom room and one in the batthroom but I found it impossible to get air circulating. Also it is a least a ten minute walk to town which sounds very reasonable. However if you are doing it a mid-day it is a very hot, unpleasant walk. If you are doing it at night, take a flashlight as the dirt road litter with rocks and potholes.

The pool and grounds are well maintained but with if you will be there during the hottest months, I would recommend a hotel where fans are available or even A/C.
