We had a double room but we were really missing space; we had just enough space to go around the bed and we could see the interior court from the door (opened at the bottom). This hostal is also a retaurant and our room was located just next to the kitchen - which of course was really animated and noisy - then it was hard to sleep correctly. The exterior and public bathrooms were really dirty at the end of the day that it prevents me from having a shower... definitely not an enjoyable experience for us....

San Pedro is expensive it's true but there is no way this hotel should be charging as much as it does. We stayed in a private room with shared bathroom - don't do it! This is currently the most expensive place we have stayed at in South America and one of the worst.
Rooms are cramped, old and dirty (no cleaning of the rooms once you've checked in, or at least we didn't have any) but the real problem is the shared bathroom facilities. There is a toilet on its own (which stank the entire time we were there) and a shower/toilet combination (and for 24hrs the toilet here was full of human excrement which made showering next to it an awful experience). The cleaners cleared this - but not until the following morning.
I took 3 showers there, two were cold and only once did we have hot water.
Noise is a real issue - either from the bar or from the kitchen (the rooms are opposite the kitchen and they play loud music here all the time they are working).
Breakfast wasn't too bad - cereal and bread with jam or cheese. Steer clear of the cold eggs. The onsite restaurant is hideously expensive - 2 small bottles of beer for the equivalent of £11 is nothing short of daylight robbery.
I wouldn't stay here again, I came away feeling dirty and robbed.

I stayed in a dorm, good beds, hot water (new bathroom) for a good price. Booked two tours there. They told me they would not sell the cheap tours, they would not have enough security ... My first tour was to Geysir del Tatio. Very nice and well organized tour but I paid a lot more than other travellers who booked at a travel angency in the streets. My second tour was to Bolivia, Salar de Uyuni. I paid so much I thought it must be good. BUT our vehicle was very old with just one or two seatbelts, for six tourists. The electronic in the front didnt work... At the first hostel we got different food than the other groups, cheaper of course ... I was the only one who paid this amount of money for this tour, it was adifference from 20 thousand Chilen.Pesos!!
Our second night we didnt spend in the Salt Hotel like they promised, we slept already in Uyuni!
A big thanks to our guide, who tried to make us enjoy the tour! I am just annoyed that I had to pay so much more than the others. When you stay at a place they should be nice and loyal and not just wanting your money to sell you cheap tours for a lot of money!

If you're looking for the Hilton Hotel, this isn't it. However, what it is is a comfortable, clean and friendly place to stay. We found the staff to be amazing and they really made us feel at home. When we arrived in S. Pedro de Atacama we hadn't booked any accommodation in advance and as it was an important festival weekend we spent quite a while searching for somewhere to stay. We eventually stumbled upon Ayllu and our first impression of the room was that it was a little dingey though the en-suite was new and pleasant. Our impression was that the room was unfinished and was probably not regularly used, but we were running out of options and it was great value. The room in question is located just behind the reception area. Surprisingly, it became our little home away from home over the few days that we stayed there. The bar staff were great and we got to know them well. During the freezing cold nights here we sat around the fire pits with them and they kept us warm, well looked after and in good company. One of them (the manager/owner?) even gave two of us a loan of his jackets so that we could go on a star-gazing tour in the Atacama desert at night (Incidentally, if you are booking one of these tours make sure to book the original tour which brings you to the planetarium, otherwise you will find yourself in the middle of the Atacama armed with just a telescope. We didn't book the tour through Ayllu so I'm not sure if they also do one). On the downside, the shower was troublesome often not producing hot water which is an absolute necessity if you plan to stay here during the cold months. Having said that, we really enjoyed our stay here.

Our two night stay ended in an argument with the owners over a late check out which was pre arranged with another staff member the night before. They said we where lying and we had to pay an extra half days stay. We felt extremely victimized that they did not believe us and they refused to call the staff member to confirm the arrangement. The room itself was small and the shower lacked hot water majority of the time. If you want to feel scammed at the end of your stay and leave San Pedro de atacama feeling angry, stay here. I wish we had stayed elsewhere.
