Beautiful place. The flamingos, the view is very nice. Good to see the afternoon there. But you do not need to spend much time there. It's a siteseing tour.

As a keen bird-watcher, this was a must for me when in northern Chile. The scenery here was great to view - beautiful in its harshness. The reserve is a large salt plain dotted with small shallow salted lakes. It is great (and admirable) to spend time observing the large amounts of flamingoes that are capable of making this harsh landscape their homes. The surrounding area up to the reserve from San Pedro de Atacama town is spectacular in its own right too. Well worth the visit. Just wish we could've spent longer there........

We traveled to the Atacama to see the flocks of Flamencos and were disappointed when we had a half dozen of birds to view. Our guide told us that the mining of the salt flats was removing the minerals and food supply the flamencos required and therefore they were not in such abundance as a few years ago. Most of the advertising material still holds images of the larger flocks.

Although this was disappointing the vast expanse of the salt lakes was amazing and the flamencos we did see put on a great show with some aerial displays.

Flamingos are there to keep you company and you can understand how the salt pans were formed. There is a little museum with useful explanation about the region's geology.

What a great place Chaxa was, the scenery it so out of this world, and the visitor centre had a little video about the reserve and the salt flats, really interesting. The centre is very good and organised and the rest of Chile could learn a thing or two about tourism from these lot. Well done!
The flamingos in the reserve were magic and the scenery stole the show, volcanos, salt flats and nature! Love it.
