“visit this museum before your tours”
Reviewed February 2, 2014

Very good explanations of the cultural influences on this region where there has been human habitation in the desert for at least 10,000 years. Interesting explanation of how these cultures lived and the art they produced.

“Not much else to see”
Reviewed January 31, 2014

Let it be clear, in first place, that I think the Museum took the right decision to remove the mummies that once were its greatest highlight, in respect to the Atacama's peoples and heritage.

That said, as rough as it may sound, now they're gone there's not much else to see. What's left is a very small museum for such an important area in cultural terms. The American Man's Museum (Museu do Homem Americano) in São Raimundo Nonato, Piauí, Brazil, the main city of the Serra da Capivara, a World Heritage Site for its rocky paintings, is much better than this one in San Pedro, in an almost ignored touristic destination.

I'd say Father La Paige Museum is still worth a visit on a late afternoon, after a long day out, to see the ancient instruments used by the atacameños to prepare and inhale hallucinogens, or as a rapid visit by noon in between tours, but don't spend your precious time in the desert there.

“A pleasant surprise”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

I wasn't expecting much from the museum but was pleasantly surprised. It's not complete and the displays near the end are in Spanish only while earlier ones are in English as well. A good explanation of the history of the area.

“Where have all the mummies gone?”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

A welcome break from the searing heat but really, this is not a good place to go. The exhibitions lack any bite and the explanations are trite at best.
Maybe the items later in the exhibition were more interesting but inexplicably, the translations into English suddenly stopped so I will never know.
I was interested to find out about the cave paintings but there was nothing there amongst the artefacts from the first human dwellers of the region. Perhaps it was in Spanish and I missed it!
There was a long video that catalogued the discussions leading to the decision to remove the dead bodies from the museum and how it was felt that there shouldn't even be replicas. In my view, they took the wrong decision.

“Highly recommend”

Enjoyed visiting this museum. Had really enjoyed exploring the desert and this museum explained the geology and culture of the area. It is well worth a visit.
