Hotel Diego de Almagro San Pedro De Atacama
Reviewed January 25, 2011

Lovely hotel in this charming desert village. The town is very tourism-oriented and easy to walk around and enjoy. The hotel has a refreshing pool and lovely adobe buildings. The front desk staff was helpful (though not with a service-with-a-smile attitude, more of a just-doing-my-job attitude). Free wi-fi.

The best in this place is the location. Rua Caracoles, the main street, is just around the corner - this will save you time and a lot of dust in your lungs. The swimming pool and external area are very beautiful and cosy. The restaurant is a mess and the breakfast is poor. Service is also not that good - we hanged the "do not disturb" tag at our door so the maid would not enter the apartment, but she did anyway, for three days in a row. She even opened the door with us inside the room. The TV was working but was completely broken, as someone has thrown it out the window, just weird... There's no fan or air conditioning, so during the summer the room seems like an oven during the day, really hot. The room is spacious but old, with carpet floor, which I honestly hate. When I say spacious, I mean the outside cabañas. I saw one internal apartment, and it is really tiny with a very small bathroom. We stayed at this hosteria as we didn't find vacancy in any other better hotel, but there are better and more confortable choices at the downtown, take a look at your options first.

Hotels in San Pedro are costly, when compared to othe places in Chile and Argentina. We were a party of four and stayed in a "cabaña familiar" (two rooms + one bath-room) what brings the price down to an acceptable level.

The hotel is very well located one block from San Pedro's main street were the city restaurants are located

The hotel receives many big groups and the service is nothing do write home about.

Breakfast is OK.

If you want a good price with excellent location this hotel is a good option.

We were on a post-conference holiday and many friends and acquaintances finished up in San Pedro at the same time we did. We found we were much better placed for exploring the town and for strolling home late at night full of food and wine - some people staying in very pleasant accommodation found they had to cross an unlit and rickety bridge over the river to get there - not the best at midnight.
The Hosteria is the oldest of the town's hotels and this shows a little in the decor. Heating worked fine, bathroom was OK (usual Chilean no bathplug problem but the water in San Pedro is extremely harsh so you wouldn't want a long soak anyway and I'm sure the desk would have supplied if we'd asked. We'd asked for a room that was "matrimoniale" but finished up with very large twin beds - each the size of a smallish european double but we are used to bigger - there is too much of us. Could have done with more hangers and very short of drawer space.
Breakfast was very variable - first day really good home cooked ham instead of the usual Chilean plastic, queso fresco, membrillo and lots of freshly made juice and properly ripe fruit. Also muesli - only time we saw in here. Scrambled eggs the only hot dish. Second day was tinned fruit, tinned juice, corn flakes, plastic ham - not even good cakes. Our other two mornings were packed breakfasts - plastic ham sandwiches in stale bread, apples, juice.
The staff are very friendly and helpful but English is limited. It is a necessity of hotel life in San Pedro that one has a smile for the guest at 4am - that is when many tours start and the San Pedro passed the test. Should we ever make it back to San Pedro - and we'd love to, we only scratched the surface of the things to do in the area - we'll stay here again.
We didn't investigate the evening menu - San Pedro is crammed with restaurants at all price brackets and none of them is more than five minutes walk from the hotel - we were trying to see how many we could manage to eat at.
Too cold to try the pool - this is winter and the outdoor temperature falls below freezing

The best thing that can be said about this hotel is that it's location is good, easy walking distance from the centre. The worst is that it's very basic and not good value for money. The staff are unhelpful and more concerned about carrying on their own conversations than attending to your needs. Typically there are at least 3 big buses parked outside guest windows to accommodate the seemingly vast numbers on package
"adventure tours".
My room contained a bed, a tv which rarely worked, and a table and chair. No air con. To let the steam out of the bathroom you had to open the window which meant people outside could see in! It was, however, clean. The buffet breakfast was very average with no cooked option.

the Hosteria is a regular hotel, with all the ordinary comforts of a chain hotel, including a swimming pool, but it's certainly not one of the hotel you will remember for life.

The rooms are quite anonymus, but there's no complaint to raise about the hotel. It's in a great position, and it's very quiet, even during the New Year's Eve.

You can look for nicer places in San Pedro, but with the Hosteria you can't go wrong.. while I've heard bad stories about other places there..

This place is OK but definitely not worth recommending. I dont think there are many outstanding places in San Pedro but I am sure there are others better than here. For example Hotel Kimal (?) looked much more funky but was full. This hotel at least works...ie. hot shower and clean rooms. However there was a TV with remote.....and only later did they tell me there was only 1 channel and even that didnt work. Service here is pretty shabby and at $160 it represented among the worst value for money we have had on our entire round the world trip. Its not really bad its just not good....nor cheap. There is no element of style and it is functional at best. The pool area is quite nice however.
