Hotel Diego de Almagro San Pedro De Atacama
Reviewed June 22, 2013

The hosteria is definitely like a hotel and it's very centrally located. Due to it's massive size and the fact it was quite empty when we travelled (June), it felt a bit empty and boring. San Pedro is a very exciting little town and I think there are more interesting and cheaper places than this.

Having said that, the staff was friendly, the rooms were clean and the little breakfast box for early tours was a nice touch.

As other reviews said, this is not a cheap place but it's more like a hotel rather than a simple hosteria. It's WELL located and that's a plus. I've seen many 'hosterias'/'hostals' that are far from the main roads and very expensive.

Atacame is a really small place, so you should double check where to stay before you book...and also due to the big load of tourist it's very overpriced.

Anyway, the hosteria is huge, very safe and quiet at night. Rooms are big, which surprised me. Also there is WIFI connection...always a plus.

Breakfast is good with a variety of choices.

When you go to the Geysers tour, you need to wake up at 3 am, so the hotel prepare a 'box breakfast' for you...which is good.

I didnt have problems with a late check out...but I think it will always depend on the demand.. but if you ask to the front desk, they can keep your room until 1 or 2 pm...then you have 2 hours to hang out before the aiport shuttle picks you up.

Swimming pool was huge... coudnt believe. I didnt use it though, since water was really cold. However you are at the dessert, so during day time...it could up above 30 C degrees.

Hosteria staff was really friendly, and they speak english easily...

I'd recommend this to families and people that they do not look basic accomodations. Atacama is full of that and expensive, so be careful before you book.

Hope it helps...

I am not sure what the cost was, since we purchased a package deal, but based upon the markups of the beer and water in the bar, it is not cheap. Still, if you wish to visit SPA and want more of a western tourist comfort this would be good for you. They boast the largest pool in San Pedro, but for some reason, it is not heated and it is cold at night so the water was brisk. The room was huge, and the bed a king size. the bathroom was functional and had a jacuzzi tub which we did not try. A Brazilian novela was being filmed in the hills nearby and many of the actors were staying here if that is any indication of anything. Breakfast was typical, but had more variety than normal in terms of fresh yogurt and pastries. Most shuttles leave to the airport at 4pm, and they wanted to charge us to stay past noon which was disappointing. However; they held our bags for free. Most of the staff are very nice and a few are very good at English or are learning. It is quite close to Caracoles street and appeared to be one of the more upscale hotels, not the rustic desert experience if you wish that. Rooms are spread over a large area all one story. Very quiet at night.

Room Tip: The road to the only gas station in town is behind the first set of rooms. Would probably be best t...

I stayed four nights at the Hostería San Pedro de Atacama, located in the middle of the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth.

All the rooms in the Hostería were located in long thatched-roofed buildings with only a single floor in each one. My room had two double beds, a night table with a telephone, several room lamps, a large mirror, a small writing desk with a chair, an old-fashioned TV set (not a flat screen) with one channel, a fairly large closet, and a stand to place my luggage. The bathroom had a tub/shower combination, but there was no plug for the bathtub and the shower did not spray water; instead, one big blotch of water came flowing out from the wall into the tub (very inconvenient). Of course, there was a sink (with a plug!) and adequate soap and towels for my needs. The two rooms were well maintained and kept quite clean.

The Hostelería has a large outdoor swimming pool, but its water was very cold, so I didn’t swim in it.

Breakfast, which was included in the price of my room, was adequate. It consisted of yogurt, fruit cocktail, scrambled eggs, toast, cookies, coffee and tea.

The Hostelería staff was friendly and helpful. I would stay there again, if I could afford it. A simple single or double room costs US$171 per night; a “superior” single or double room cost US$193 per night.

Quite expensive for what you get, but that's probably thru for most hotels in the region... Unfortunately +/- no warm water in the bathroom most of the time (and as it was outside really cold, this was not acceptable)

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The place is quite and, at the same time, very near of Caracoles street, where all the buzz is concentrated. Definitely a good option in the city.
