Owner description: We started operating in San Pedro in 2003 and now have by far the largest public observatory in South America, with 11 telescopes between 20 to 72cm diameter. Most other tours in Chile use telescopes which are 3 to 4 times less luminous. We offer tours in different languages (english french and spanish) by guides who are competent in astronomy and who do speak these languages natively. If you want to observe through the sky through the largest visual telescopes in South America, and see the marvels of our universe, we are the place.

Many people told us about this tour and it turned out to be our favorite experience in the desert. You'll learn a lot about the constellations in the Southern hemisphere, and then you'll be able to look through nine or ten telescopes that are already fixed on stars or galaxies. Definitely worth it. Excellent value for the money. If you can set the exposure on your camera, bring it and they will show you how to take a photo of the Milky Way with you in it! Best photo of the trip!

The evening is split into 3 sections: viewing night sky with the naked eye; telescope viewing and; Q&As with hot chocolate. Our favourite was viewing the sky with the naked eye and learning about what we were looking at. Our canadian guide was knowledgeable and passionate and could explain things pretty easily. Would recommend this tour.

We had great expectations ...

pros:
- great idea, lovely view of the starry night sky
- warm blankets / hot chocolate provided

cons:
- the Canadian astronomer was not particularly engaging
- nor informative
- many of the telescopes needed to be adjusted ... we spent more time waiting as there was only one person running around to different telescopes adjusting them

I visited San Pedro in September, weather was mild, but not too hot as I heard it gets in the summer. The place itself is a strong attraction for backpackers, of all ages, mainly young ones. But do not be put off by that, there are so many places to visit, all astonishing, so nice.
When you go there, do not miss Tatio Geysers, Valle de la Luna, valle de la Muerte; I used a travel agency called Cosmo Andino, there are the most serious and reliable. Mauricio, the guide, was very good and explained everything with a lot of patience. I satyed at Hostal Soncheck, also very good, beautiful and unusual setting.
Beware of very cold mornings when you visit the Geysers, but you have the oportunity to go in a natural heated pool which is delightful. All in all a wonderful trip, not to be missed

The tour takes place outside of San pedro in a very dark area of the desert, which just increases the brightness of the night sky. Our guide, Les, was highly knowledgable and managed to explain things in simple and easy terms. The tour is about 2.5 hours long, and you look at the night sky with the naked sky and also with some very large telescopes. Groups are small, the tour is well organised, and well worth the $18,000 CLP.
