Casa Solcor Boutique Bed & Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 24, 2012

Casa Solcor is a beautiful boutique hotel located in the heart of San Pedro de Atacama, at just a 10 minute walk from the central plaza. We stayed there four unforgettable nights. All the rooms have private bathrooms, and are spacious. There is a common area that includes kitchen, dining room, and living room. It has several terraces, one upstairs near the TV room, where you can watch at night one of the most awe-inspiring views of the infinite starry sky.

Everything is very clean, and there is also room service. But more important than the facilities was the experience we had there, where the people who manage the place were really helpful and willing to make our stay as pleasant and good as possible. They gave us all the best tips of where to go, and what restaurants to eat at, and what tourist agencies were the best, and so on.

All in all, I would say it is one of the most amazing B&B we have ever been to. Excellent in every sense! We highly recommend it as it is and even more so with the brand new building, swimming pool and barbecue area that are being built at the moment and will be ready to use by the end of this year.

What a great spot just a few blocks from the main street in San Pedro. The house was beautifully furnished and peaceful. There's a new addition and pool expected soon. Natalia was a very helpful host and made our stay a wonderful with restaurant & excursion recommendations, she even made dinner reservations for us all. We hope to return! Thank you for a perfect holiday!

So, we were really looking at Tierra Atacama as the BEST place to stay in San Pedro and missed the great JETSETTER promotion which was running (USD595.00 per person, per night) :-( But having been on holiday in Chile for a month and staying at some very nice Boutique Hotels, we eventually opted for another accommodation experience.

Our research pointed us to CASA SOLCOR and reviewed other guests' comments here on Trip Advisor and decided this will be our abode. I began communication with Natalia, who was very prompt and efficient with the replies and answers to my questions.

Natalia recommended we take Licancabur Transfer for the 1h 20m ride between Calama and San Pedro. We made this reservation via email from Santiago airport before we got on the plance and they replied right away. Upon arrival in Calama on name was on the board and paid the 12000p ticket price to San Pedro (i.e. US$24.00) It seems most people do this and there a transfer reservation is recommended. The bus will drop you directly to your hotel. (Can I suggest you avoid taking luggage that requires pulling with wheels, as the terrain is either dirt or stones)

We were the last of the bus passengers to be dropped off and I was looking at all the various types of accommodation where people were dropped off. CASA SOLCOR was the only one that had someone waiting at the gate with a big smile to warmly receive us. Meet "Maca" (now resigned from Casa Solcor)

We were shown around the "adobe" style house and was told the house rules. Maca gave us a map of San Pedro and wrote down some recommended activities to do during our 5 night stay.

What I did not expect, is that we would be alone in the house, except for the mornings. We walked into town on the VERY dusty road. (a flashlight is essential) An easy walk to Caracoles where we had dinner at ADOBE, LA ESTAKA, LA CASANO and BLANCO during our stay.

On the down side. The house is ADOBE style with no central heating. There were two gas heaters, one shared between the two back rooms, making the rooms VERY COLD in the night. And when gas runs out and nobodies around to replace it you freeze. There is construction going on with the addition of another house providing 4 new rooms and there is a management transition with Maca who more or less LEFT and Natalia had not yet arrived to take up the job on 1st July. Im certain with Natalia there, everything will be perfect.

The altitude did not pose a problem for us and walking back to the case in the dark of night was awesome under the amazing starry night. Avoid trips here during full moon as you will miss the beauty of the night sky.

We became friends with another couple at the house and together we rented a car from someone's father (a junk) and did our own private tours to the lakes, salt flats and lunar valley. But the most amazing tour, was the only organized one we did. Booked the English tour with SPACE (its own review to follow) This was the highlight of the trip.

The Atacama is an amazing place and where is stay is unimportant, compared to the awesomeness of the environment around you.

What majesty. An extremely spiritual place.

Room Tip: You will need a flashlight for walks to/from the city. Rent a car, if you so desire, in Calama at t...

We had a fantastic three night stay at Casa Solcor. For San Pedro, it is very reasonable and so much better than the hostals which are only marginally cheaper for a couple. The breakfasts are great, it is very quiet and Maca (who was away until the last day of our stay) is lovely. There is a fully equiped kitchen, plenty of places to read a book, listen to music and to enjoy the sun outside.
Negatives: It was quite difficult to find as there is no sign outside and it is a 10min walk from town. Because Maca was away during our stay there was essentially no-one on site and we didn't know what time breakfast was and had a few other questions we wanted to ask. Finally, none of the rooms have keys to the locks on the doors so you can't lock them! Unfortunately we didn't know this and locked our door, assuming one of the three keys given to us would unlock it. Luckily another friendly guest was able to break into the room using a butter knife! Despite all of this, I would highly recommend coming here and we would definitely go back.

Went with friends, had a wonderful experience staying at Casa Solcor ! Cozy atmosphere, nice room(excellent mattress) with excellent bathroom in suite, spotless clean. Breakfast is very good, with fresh fruit, jam, avocado, fresh bread, quinoa cereal, juice, etc. Janet, who serves breakfast, is outstanding and helpful! Walking distance (not more than 10 minutes) from Caracoles, which is main street.
They can organize tours anywhere you want to go.
What more can you ask?

I have mostly good things to say about this place. The house is nice, as are the rooms and the breakfast. There is a communal kitchen where you can get tea or coffee around the clock. Big garden with some chairs to sit outside. There are, however, the following downsides:

- Lack of cooling: It does get very hot in San Pedro during the day, and an a/c to counter this would be nice
- Distance from the city center: You walk about 15-20 minutes to the center of S. P. de Atacama. Not a big deal, though it can be very annoying if you forgot something in your room or if you need to get dinner but are also tired from a long day of touring
- Availability of Internet: Signal is ok in some parts of the house, not in others, and typically not in the rooms

None of these are big deals and they shouldn't distract you from going hear. Maca(?) is a very friendly host and the premises are beautiful. I just think that, relative to the prices of some other places in S.P. which are closer to the center, this place would maybe have to be a bit cheaper.

thank you for sharing your experience
now we are entering in winter, but for next summer we have considered several cooling options
for internet, we are connecting an extension for much better signal
distance ... not much to do but enjoy the walk ... remember flash light
though the good about it, is that allows to listen the birds instead of the usual sound of tourism ...
keep enjoying your trips

It was a fantastic stay in Casa Solcor. A lovely, very comfortable and clean house, 10 mins away from city centre which allow for an extra feeling of relief. Natalia and Maca, two helpful, lively and very nice girls managing the house, who showed me around the town and surroundings making my stay more local and enjoyable. Definitely a must when staying in San Pedro!
