Hostal Vilama
Reviewed July 28, 2011

We originally booked a triple room at Hostal Vilama but it was so tiny that we changed to a twin and single.

Apart from small rooms, the hostal was very clean and tidy and the hosts were very obliging, leaving a flask of coffee for us in our room on the first night.

There's a separate kitchen to eat breakfast (rolls and jam, tea or coffee) or you can eat outside if the weather is nice - plenty of seating area in the long, narrow courtyard that attracts the sun.

There was a power cut the first night we were there and they kindly supplied us with torches to walk to the restaurants/bars (which are about 5-10 mins away around the corner). There was also a problem with the water heater one night but they were on the case straight away.

Our transfer to Calama airport didn't turn up at 5am the morning we were leaving and the owner came out and rang her next door neighbour to see if he would take us (he did) so really could not fault their helpfulness and aside from small rooms, I would stay there again as it was very reasonably priced.

We stayed at the Vilama for 3 nights. Its on the outskirts of where its all happening - about a 5-10 min walk away - which meant it was nice and quiet. The rooms are small and basic but very clean and after spending 3 nights touring the Bolivian volcanos and staying in hotels with no hot water, the shower at the Vilama was a godsend. Breakfast was simple but nice enough. There's a communal kitchen you can use if you want to stay in for lunch/dinner. The owner was a very nice lady - very helpful. Its not a 5* place but then none of the hotels/hostals in San Pedro look 5*.

Room Tip: Don't book the triple room! Its bunks and a single in the tiniest room. OK for children tho.
