Owner description: Portillo is a ski resort located 100 miles from Santiago, Chile near the city of Los Andes. Beneath imposing mountains, Portillo rises from 2880 meters above sea level to its highest point 3332 meters with 23 ski trails and 12 lifts. Portillo is the oldest ski area in South America, and its history holds an important place in the legend of skiing. Over the past 50 years, Portillo has gained a reputation as an excellent destination for skiers and boarders. Practicing ski sports in Portillo is a very popular activity among people from all around the world.

A little farther to drive, but a much better road than Valle Nevado. Keep in mind that South American resorts cater to hotel guests, so day trippers like us are don't have access to the facilities, like a lodge, storage, etc. But generally the staff were otherwise helpful. Awesome views, much better fall lines and runs than Valle Nevado, and much better service.

My sense is that Valle Nevado and the areas nearby are much more heavily marketed than Portillo because of their proximity to Santiago, they just have a bigger marketing budget. But to put it bluntly, Valle Nevado just plain sucks. Crummy road, arrogant and even abusive employees. High prices. Skip Valle Nevado and go to Portillo.

The hotel is really nice. The rooms are up-to-date and well equipped, eventhough there are no TV´s in them. The hotel restaurant has outstanding service and good food.

That been said, the price for the whole week is really high and all the extras are extremely overpriced when compared to the whole rest of Chile. It´s a shock when you get the bill and the end of the week...be prepared.

The ski runs are ok, but few. If there isn´t a lot of snow around they end up closing some of them at the afternoon and if there´s some ski team training the high-speed run will be closed all week too.

They offered hat I believe was a student special. For 45 luca (45,000 pesos) it included transportation from Vina del Mar, lift tickets, rentals, and instructors for novices. First for the good: it was a good value, the views were gorgeous, the people were very friendly and helpful, and the weather was nice (sort of an independent but I'll go with it). For the cons: skiing (I snowboarded) was mediocore as there wasn't much snow and it wasn't quite as well groomed as I would have liked, the trip was about 2 hours longer each way than they told us, rentals didn't include helmet (an extra 7,000 pesos?!?), and lunch at the autoservicio was incredibly average especially for the price (10,000 pesos). All in all, not bad, worth a day trip, but I think that is about the max I would give it.

We arrived in Portillo by motorcoach from Santiago for the day - a beautiful drive through chilean mining country, may switchbacks, and we loved seeing the treacherous looking ski slopes and the beautiful lake...the resort there was so so, mediocre service and food, but the trip was well worth it...

First of all let me say I skied here on a day trip from Santiago. I like to ski varied terrain and I didn't want to commit to a one week stay at Portillo (the resort itself has a one week minimum stay policy). That being said, the ski facilities are pretty good. Once I got Roca Jack out of the way, I had a lot of fun skiing the rest of the mountain. Warning......one beer only at Tio Bobs bar and restaurant. At 16,000 feet you can very easily become a SUI (skier under the influence). The lifties and the ski patrol are all very friendly and professional. All the rich and famous beautiful people from around the world come here, so you will hear lots of different accents. They look great, can't ski very well, but they look great.
