“Clean and quiet hostel with delicious breakfast and great rooms”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

This hostel is definetly one of the best hostels in Chile! Good location (5 min from the bus terminal, the Mall and the City Center), clean and spacious rooms and hot showers (all day), (german) breakfast with tea & coffee. Especially nice when the sun shines and you can sit on one of the many sunny terraces. Might not be the best choice in Winter since rooms have no heating (but thats normal in Chile) and you will have to walk outside (on the patios) to reach the bathrooms. The staff helps you to book tours or arrange rental cars etc. Unfortunately, the service experiences was mixed: while some of the staff was extraordinary friendly, others were not. Would definelty be worth a rating of 5 if all of the staff would have been friendly! Still a great choice!

Hostal Punto has a lot of positives. It is close to bus station so you can walk there and not have to pay a taxi. It has an in-house kitchen that stays open till 8-9 p.m. which makes it really convenient to pick up an afternoon lunch/snack. The food was excellent and prices good. They also have beer, wine and drinks on the menu. The breakfasts are substantial and you can order extra things if you pay for them. The staff is friendly and they place is clean and run efficiently. They have wifi that works well too. There were private showers and hot water was good.
I wasn't aware they charged 500 pesos for a towel rental but that is better than packing a towel. The one downfall is if you get off the bus before 7 a.m. you have to wait around as they don't have staff there till 7 a.m. Also, they advertise tours which are through a tour agency right down the block. You can book your tours directly with the agency and save a few dollars as they charge a little more. The tours are excellent. We took the Obsevatory tour that leaves at 7 p and returns at midnight or so. It was awesome to see the stars, galaxy and moon. We had an awesome picture of the moon taken through the telescope. The tour of Valle Elqui and the Pisco tour was great. The scenery through the Valle is incredible. Lunch is provided on the daytime tours and is excellent! We also did the Isla Damas tour which was awesome. We were able to see penguins, sea lions, dolphins and many native birds. It is well worth doing all these tours. Bring warm clothing for the Isla tour as you are on a boat and it gets chilly. And don't take the tour after a night of drinking (one guy got very sick on the boat). Hostal Punto is a good hostel for what it offers.

Room Tip: The dorm rooms were fine for us as there are only 4 beds. The private rooms are way more expensive...

We had a spacious, airy private room, with nice facilities. Hotel quality.
Communal kettles available in the courtyard. There's also a small cafe in the hostel courtyard that does home made quiche and burgers for a reasonable price if you don't fancy eating out. The breakfast included in the price is fine, but you can add 'extras' (real coffee instead of Nescafe etc) for a little extra money.
Good location for easy access to bus station.
Nicest place we stayed in la serena.

We stayed at El Punto for 2 sets of 2 nights (separated by trip to Valle Elqui) at the end of October 2013. It was clear from the website that this was a hostal which price wise was geared to those not on a very tight budget, does not have a kitchen, and that rooms could be cold in winter but that heaters could be requested. Like the weather it was a little chilly but there were plenty of blankets in both rooms. We stayed over a holiday weekend and clearly it was essential to book as people were being turned away. For us the advance internet booking system was very convenient.

We found the service very good and the staff friendly and helpful in terms of general advice, helping us use a Chilean mobile, booking a trip to Isla Damas (excellent), storing luggage until our bus left and providing food late in the evening. The situation is very convenient, the ambiance was pleasant with a mix of ages, and the hostal itself very attractive.. Recent negative reviews surprised me, which has spurred me on to write this.

I stayed in the hostel for one night during the weekend. Since I showed up at El Punto I felt comfortable with the funny welcome and talk with the manager. The place is surrounded by nice atmosphere and also close to the bus station, Mall, Main Square and If you want you can have a walk around the town.
If you don't want to walk you can rent a bike as well.

Rooms and bathrooms are clean and the breakfast is "El Rico Desayuno"! Definitely I will be back to this place during the summer.

Everything you need to know is detailed on the website.

Thank you Bea!

We had two nights at El Punto, and only have good things to say about it. It´s german-owned, and that was pretty clear according to, that everything was working and clean. German effectivity. The service was also great. Good for families and elderly folk.
Try their german applepie...

I've found the hostal in my guidebook where it said the owners were Austrians, but they sold and now there are German owners. It was the only hotel I've stayed in on a two weeks trip where I had to pay in advance (!!!), in all the other ones I've paid when I checked out. It was also the only one which asked for a deposit in case I "would break" anything!
Rooms were clean but very tiny and cold (no heating!!!) - same thing for the shared bathroom. I didn't book in advance and couldn't get a room with private bath. So make sure to book in advance if you want to stay there.
Breakfast was quite OK once I've explained the girls in the kitchen what a vegan eats and doesn't eat.

Dear Guest,

I really do appreciate your comments but I still would like to add some information to it.

Around the world there are several forms of dealing with the payment of the room rate – some Hostals prefer the payment when you check-out; some when you check-in. In some places they also charging you even a higher amount for the guarantee – some don’t even charge you anything. So please don’t get upset or even angry because I think nowadays it is even more important to inform yourself or to get informed by the staff because our aim is not to make our guests angry!
The same happened to you with the “cold room”. In the winter time we always offer an additional heating. But we still have the heating available in the spring/summer time if somebody really gets cold. So please ask the next time -wherever you head next- whenever you need something additionally.

So have a nice trip and maybe we can welcome you again someday in Chile/La Serena.

Friendly regards,
Beatrice Theel
