This trail was apparently made after the Pol Pot regime as a way of transporting materials and I suspect rice in particular. It is very basic in design - two axles on which a bamboo/wooden frame fits but not permanently attached, an engine with a home built clutch. The ride is a bit long and the ride back is exactly the same with not much to see. However it is worthwhile even if only to understand how Cambodians have coped in the aftermath of Pol Pot and used their ingenuity with what was available.

A different way to travel but not for those with a bad back. A bumpy ride sitting on a platform as you travel on a single track about 1 mile long. The fun begins when you see another 'train' coming towards you! The rule is whoever has the least passengers has to stop, dismantle their transport and let the others through. A fun little trip and if you go late in the day you will get to see the sunset over the fields.

Loved it, amazing the way they dismantle trains to allow train going other way. Delightful family, beautiful children meet and greet, and sell. No pressure sales. Loved it but had bit of a minor sore backside at the end, as it is a fair way. Love Battambang.

Something simple but different; with a bit of excitement. Lovely and friendly local people and children with a great sense of humour. It was great having the children showing us around the village and having refreshments with the local people (little shops encouraging tourists to buy refreshments). The Bamboo train was exciting and relaxing because there was the risk of coming off, or the platform coming off from the wheels; but at the same time you get to see lovely greenery and countryside. A must do activity if you are in Battambang!

I took the bamboo train about an hour or so before sunset, so on my return it was extremely beautiful.

The bamboo train hurtles along at 50km/h on a railway track constructed in 1917 to link Phnom Penh and Battambang, and there are no handrails along the sides of the train which makes for a really exciting experience. As there is only a single railway track that runs in both directions, when two trains approach each other, one side has to disembark to let the other train pass depending on the number of passengers on board. For this reason, I would recommend that people take the bamboo train with a group of friends.

Also, I went with a guide (from the brilliant Grasshopper Adventures) during the off-peak season. This meant that I wasn't herded into any tourist traps that would be common for large crowds of tourists during the peak season, and I also got to spend more time at the brick kiln with the guide helping to translate. The brick kiln is massive and rather interesting, and it is also a source of income for the local population there.
