The Sanctuary Villa
Ranked #14 of 26 Hotels in Battambang
Reviewed November 10, 2010

I recently (together with my husband and four friends) had the pleasure in staying at The Sanctuary Villa earlier this month for two nights. Dara, the owner, really has done the most wonderful job on this place. He has created a beautiful, stylish, peaceful retreat within easy walking distance of the main town centre but far enough away to be able to take a deep breath and really feel like you are on holidays. Fantastic, caring and attentive staff where nothing is too much trouble. Dara was always on hand to make sure we had absolutely everything we needed but as he has thought of pretty much everything there really was nothing we did in fact need.

From providing a jeep and driver to ferry us all whereever we wanted to go to providing the credit to allow me to make a very cheap overseas phone call back to Australia, nothing was ever too much trouble. The restaurant fare was very good and the gorgeous swimming pool and absolutely superb air conditioned bungalows brought welcome relief from the heat. The best value for money hotel/inn that I stayed in during my 7 week trip to South East Asia. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It was wonderful!

My friends and I had the great privilege of being some of the first to sample the luxurious new Sanctuary, a surprising place to find in utilitarian Battambong. Dara and his staff were more than attentive; they actively sought our opinion on everything from drinks to lighting, wanting to make sure The Sanctuary offers its visitors only the best. A bit out of town, it offers quiet and calm, and a great pool to wash off the days dust. A car and driver are available for free for rides into the city center and for sightseeing. For us, they went above and beyond all expectations, patiently ferrying us to some remote sites. The food, especially the amok was some of the best we had in Cambodia.A great staff, a beautiful layout and a soothing atmosphere make this the place to stay in Battambong.

Stayed for two nights recently in a traditional villa. Great spacious bed room with very modern bath and shower. Lots of green space in the hotel compound. This is a real hiden gem of Battambang. There are variety of food to choose in thier restaurant. Had a dinner once and loved it esp stir fried hot basil. The staff are really well-trained and really helpful. I really felt safe and secure while staying there ( I'm a single female traveller). The hotel even gave me a sim card to give them a call for pick-up when Ifinished sightseeing in town. Do not miss this Sanctuary (well deserved name) when you are in Battambang.

The staff is perfectly attentive, and for the money, the rooms are as cozy and capacious as I've seen in Cambodia or all of SEA for that matter. The Western breakfasts are spot on (mind you, I am a fan of U.S. style breakfasts). However, for lunch in dinner, would recommend ordering the local cuisine. The whole atmosphere and architecture forces you to relax, the hum of chants from temples in the background can be a nice touch - if sometimes a little nettling in the morning (but hey, your in Asia, deal).

The friendly staff did an excellent job arranging all logistics for us - from pick up at docks, to excursions, to drop off at bus - there is nothing they can't arrange.

Simply put, the hotel delivers on its name: The Sanctuary is an ideal place to escape the bustle of Battambang or recoup after a long day of tuk-tuks, hikes, noris, and temples. I highly recommend it.

I arrived in Battambang feeling a bit hot and harassed after a long boat ride from Siem reap (which was a beautiful journey and worth doing) and searched for somewhere to stay. After some internet search I chose The Sanctuary Villa. I am pleased I did!

The rooms are beautiful and enormous as are the park like grounds. The staff were lovely and really helpful and the price was unbeatable, especially given it included breakfast and free use of bikes etc. They also have a cool jeep that can pick you up etc. The restaurant also has a good menu of western and local dishes. The thing that I liked best was the location. It is in a green area of the city just on the outskirts of the city. It is an easy walk to town, but the area is like staying in a small village. The locals are really friendly and not used to tourists (which is kind of nice and rare). Its a low rise area and the grounds are big, so it also gets a nice gentle breeze through the buildings and grounds, which is lovely on a hot day.

I borrowed one of their bikes and biked to Ek Phanom which is an Angkor era ruin. It takes about 40 minutes to bike there and is an easy ride through rural area and villages. I recommend doing that. There is also a 'circus' done by underprivileged kids nearby which happens on Thursday nights. It was amazing and the the kids are so talented. I recommend seeing that if you are there on a Thursday. The bamboo train is fun too. Actually, there is lots to see there. The staff at The Sanctuary are able to help as well.

The Sanctuary Villas has just opened two weeks ago and I have to say that I´ve never got a better service during my six months on the road: tea and fruits at checkin, booking of a tour guide and driver who showed me the real Battambang (his name is Saro and he did a great job and is working his butt of to make a living - just ask for him!) . In the evening I had a one hour complementary massage which was really relaxing. The owner is everywhere to make sure everybody is having a great time and since there are only five villas the place has a very exclusive touch.
Villas are spacious with DVD-Player (movies for free), fridge, walk in closet and a georguous bathroom. The pool area ist nice and if you want to go to town (which is not very appealing, to be honest) there´s a WWII-Jeep bringing you to the central market for free. They give you a mobile and you just call when you have enough and want to be picked up - amazing!
You can order every meal to your room without extra charge and the prices are ok.
You could sleep at the "Royal Hotel" in town for less but if you want to get a real Sanctuary spend the 50 USD - it´s more than worth it!

Very nice spot, very clean and brand new villas. Service very attentive, sometimes a bit too attentive.. All in all I would definitely recommend. Only small negative was the lack of privacy offered by the villas all next to each other. Had to close all curtains or would be like fish in a bowl.
