“Lily's makes you feel at home in Hsipaw”
Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at Lily's for five nights, not in the least because she makes your staying feel like home. Super friendly and funny, helpful and willing to organise things for you. The rooms are clean, cool and the beds are comfortable. Breakfast is included and they rent out bycicles. Forget about Mr. Charles, this is the place to be in Hsipaw!

The same person in Hsipaw owns two guesthouses under the Nham Kae Mao name. We were first put in the old guesthouse by the clocktower. The room was overpriced, noisy and unpleasant. Also the older staff member (owner?) was money-focussed and unhelpful.

After returning from a trek we changed to the newer guesthouse around the corner, called "Lily The Home". This was a much nicer stay. The room was much better value, at half the price (US$15/night twin shared bathroom), yet it was more pleasant. There is a nice courtyard area to relax in and Lily is a fantastic, friendly host. The best value place we stayed in Myanmar (but be sure to get the newer guesthouse!)

I happily recommend Lily to anybody travelling to Hsipaw, a laid back small town in the Shan hill region. The guest house is impeccably clean, everything seems brand new and is in perfect order. I paid 10 USD for a nice room with a balcony (great for drying washed clothes), including a very basic breakfast. Staff was very friendly and spoke English well enough. There's WiFi, too - very slow, but it's free. An important feature for all travellers is the yard with some benches and tables that makes it easy to meet other people and get organized for further moves.
Special praise goes out for the trekking tours - there is considerable flexibility to tailor a tour according to your wishes. We did a four day hike into the Nam Sanh region lead by softspoken and intelligent Mr Zaw Myint whom I can wholeheartedly recommend as tour guide.

It's a new place and has beautiful buildings. The rooms are nice and bed very comfortable. The bathrooms are new, clean and with very nice hot showers.

They can arrange some very interesting trekkings here and are very helpful in telling where to go to around and where to eat.

The owners were very friendly to me, I stayed here 3 nights and really loved it!

We staying at Mr. Charles, which was horrible, so moved into Lily the Home, after being directed there by the Nam Khae Mao guest house. The owner of Lily's (Dr. Aung?) made us feel so welcome, and the room was modern and clean, with our own balcony overlooking the central courtyard, where there were lots of tables and seats for communal use. We arranged a boat trip on the river and asked if they could find others to share the cost. A notice was put up, and 6 other people joined us, which meant we paid a lot less. Excellent organisation considering there was no profit in it for them (we would have gone anyway). They also arranged a minibus to take us to Mandalay. The guest house is very centrally located, not far from the river and market. Be sure to visit "Little Bagan" -ask for directions at the GH. Could have happily stayed here longer. This Guest House (Lily the Home) is new and they are really trying hard.

We stayed in this guesthouse 2 nights and both nights, they screwed up with our reservation.

We were supposed to get a double room with private bath but they gave away our room to other people. We were offered a triple room and the owner said that the room was normally at $35 and we should be glad that she gives it to us for the same price as the double room. I thought that since they were the one screwing up with our reservation, it's only fair that we are paying thr price of a double room.

That same day, Lily told us that she would give us another room the next night. When we left for trekking the next morning, she made us pack to change of room.

When we came back in the evening, she told us that she promised the double room to someone else so we couldn't change of room and will need to go back to the same room. Instead of giving us a discount for making up for the mistake she made, she told us that she was nice enough to give us information on trekking around Hsipaw for free and we should not give her any trouble!

To top it off, she then offered us to check in a tiny single room in which she would put another single bed for $5 cheaper!

We also heard that prices for trekking was much cheaper at Mr. Charles.

Overall, I would not recommend anyone to go there. It is not a good value for the price.

The staff is very friendly. The rooms are basic with twin beds, fan, table, thin walls. We had a room with our own bathroom for was $ 20. Breakfast inside or on the balcony was simple but filling (toast, eggs, juice, pot of coffee and big plate of papaya). The thin walls is no problem for the nearby main road. They have comfy mattress, good pillows and blankets.

This is by no means a backpacker hangout, like Lily's and Mr Charles, which we quite liked! The wifi not always work. And sometimes the electricity is also a problem but the great staff fixes it with the generator. You can arrange treks, book bus tickets etc. at the desk.

We had realy a good stay, thanks to the friendly staff.
