They have rooms to suit every budget. The staff are more than friendly and I had a nice experience here. It is within walking distance of most places in this town and they also organise tours. They also have a resident doctor. I recommend this place.

There are two distinct parts to Mr Charles. An older house with funny stairs and basic rooms and a newer building.

We were in the older house with an internal bathroom. The plumbing was interesting but functional. At $30 a night its pretty good value.

Staff here are delightful and exceedingly patient. Guides are present in the late afternoon to discuss options for the next day, whether it be trekking or a boat ride. If there's something you want to do, ask and one of them will be able to help.

Breakfast in the moring is n the newer building. The food was good, but we were a little bemused by the tourist feeding frenzy that occured.

If you get a chance, visit Fleur at the East Haw and you'll have a great chance to hear about the political history fo the region and also the changes that are occuring. If you are going to visit, Fleur is an avid reader of good literature and welcomes new material.

A well known busy meeting place for travellers exploring the area. The rooms (in the new building) are clean and comfortable. Hot water was a bit tempermental. The staff are extremely helpful and will organise local treks.

Room Tip: New building is better

I stayed at Mr Charles as a solo female traveller, the staff were really helpful, booking treks, bus tickets etc. breakfast in my opinion was the best I gad in Myanmar, a buffet with both local and western foods on offer, fill your boots! There are 2 sitting areas and it's really sociable and easy to meet people to explore the area with. Special thanks to Nilar for safely delivering me to the bus station and organising my shoes that I left to be sent to me.

We stayed for two nights last months at Mr Charles and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Mr Charles Guesthouse seemed to have generated a worrying flurry of negative reviews a few months back and we were slightly apprehensive as to what we might find, however we needn't have worried and reviews seem to be picking up again.

Mr Charles Guesthouse is just that: a guesthouse. We had a lovely light and airy room with a king-sized and single bed, sitting area, separate bathroom and small balcony overlooking the breakfast room. The bathroom was a little basic with not a lot of space for toiletries, but the water in the shower was piping hot as long as you left it running for a few minutes before stepping in.

The bed was so comfortable and we slept as well, if not better, than we did in far more luxurious hotels during our Myanmar trip. We were woken up on both mornings by the sound of children singing and chanting at the school opposite.

Breakfast was a bit of a scrum as everyone seems to arrive at the same time and as the crowds increased the staff were busy placing more and more tables in the courtyard to accommodate everyone. There wasn't a great selection, especially if you arrived at the same time as everyone else and the kitchen staff hadn't had time to replenish the trays, but the aim was more to fill the stomach than to linger as most people were keen to get off trekking.

Bottles of beer are available from the fridge just outside the main reception area, near to where the trips/treks are organised. These can be taken to one of the outdoor tables, or taken up to the communal balcony on the first floor overlooking the road outside.

Staff were smiling and helpful, especially when we couldn't open the door to our safe.

There is a handy pharmacy right next door which recommended a soothing lotion to ease my incredibly itchy mosquito bites.

There really isn't a lot of accommodation choices in Hsipaw though there seems to be a lot of building work around, but Mr Charles is a fine guesthouse for a couple of nights.

Amazing customer service, staff who are proactive and know what you want before you do. Excellent advice on treks and best use of train back to Mandalay (get off at Pyin OO Lwin and take a share taxi, to save 3 or 4 hours). We were only sorry they were so busy, we could only stay one night, but they booked us in somewhere else and moved our bags for us. Yes, they now have groups (as well as groups of Chinese working on the new pipe line) but we had to best breakfast in Burma here. A model of how Burma should be developing.

We stayed 2 nights. As a hotel it is very good: Large nice room, comfortable bed, very good stable Wi-fi in the room. Excelent buffet breakfast with Myanmar dishes as well as western to choose.
Second thing is the staff: very friendly and the special is thier effort to help you plan the trip and especialy the trek in the villages.
We recommend very much the full day trip!
