“Worth seeing, but overpriced”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

There are a cluster of religious attractions to be seen in Bago, but if you started your round at Shwemawdaw before 5pm, you would be asked to pay USD$10 (fee to see all of the Bago attractions). There was hardly any curation, English textual commentary or explanation, and even maintenance in the case of some of the exhibits, so the USD$10 is excessive for the zero value-add. Apart from Shewmawdaw, no one seemed to be monitoring the other exhibits. If you had looked at all the other attractions first, then ended up at Shewmawdaw last after 5pm, no one would have asked you to pay the $10 fee. You can't pay to just look at one site, and supposedly, you could look at the sites over two days (but it doesn't say so on the flimsy admission card you're given). You could easily look at all the sites well within one day.

“Beautiful and peaceful Pagoda”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

We called in to Shwemawdaw Paya on our way back to Yangon from Golden Rock on a scorching hot day. The tiles were burning hot and we had to hop from shady spot to shady spot.
Much quieter than Shwedagon.

“I missed the point.”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

I didn't find the tiles to be hot. In fact, I think that the material they use to line the surroundings of the stupas/pagodas which are out in the sun is specifically meant not to burn your feet.

Nice, but nothing special here. Unless you wish to have your palm read, in which case there are half a dozen shops which will do it for you. Apparently, the Buddha likes future readings. If you want to avoid the $10 fee... use your brain and your feet. Take off your shoes!!

“Impressive Entrance”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

Similar to the Shwedagon in Yangon but taller & visible from all over Bago. Theres not many tourists here. Around the central stupa are the remains of the previous top which fell during an earthquake. Take time to appreciate the entrance of this pagoda - it has one of the best pair of Chinthe - half lion, half dragon guardians you'll see in all of Myanmar.

“Taller than Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

This pagoda is every bit as impressive as Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda but not as busy. Over the years it has been damaged by earthquakes but it still stands as a regal monument that is easy to wander around.
As with all Pagoda's, no foot wear at all is allowed and the tiles are hot and when wet are slippery. A camera fee of 300ks (30 cents) is payable to help with maintenance.
