Owner description: Dating to the 12th century, this strategic fortress is one of two highly fortified hills (Trapezitza being the other) that protected Bulgarian rulers living on the site in the tsar’s palace.

It cost 6 lev to go and takes, respectively, 2 and 1/2 hours to see. It is a very old fortress for obvious reasons. The interior, boasts very different artistic works from Western Europe, darker, more Slavic themes. The views of the surrounding town and hillsides is spectacular. If you are interested in Balkan or Slavic history at all, it is a must see. You go back in time when you yep inside. Between the river below and the surround city and cliffs it is breathtaking. You won't be sorry.

Tsarevets is the star attraction of Veliko Turnovo, but honestly it looks much better from the outside than the inside. There's really not much reason to go in except to spend an hour or two walking around and seeing the rest of the scenery from the walls. But everything within the fortress itself is poorly restored. The chapel is actually quite disappointing, and they make you pay again to go up in the tower. If interested in Bulgarian fortresses, Belogradchik is where it's at.

The fortress is the most important one in Bulgaria, often compared with Rome and Constantinople in magnificence. This is the major attraction in veliko tarnovo. At the top of the hill there's a church.

It's an interesting enough place to scramble around amid the ruins and walk along the walls for a couple of hours. There's a church inside too that is quite nice. There's also a viewing tower which gives some panoramic views, and you can go up by lift.

The downside is that they didnt have any signboards in English explaining the history of the fortress or the significance of the ruins. So it becomes more of an excursion for the adventure and the views, rather than for history.
