“A GOOD VALUE HOTEL”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Third time in Borovets and the first time at the Iglika Palace, previously stayed in the Samokov and the Rila Hotels. The Iglika is smaller and friendlier, and being round the back of the Rila, much quieter than being on 'the strip'. I am sure that having the Police Station attached to one end of the hotel provides a deterent to being rowdy on nthe way home.

Rooms: We stayed in the 4* bit where you get a balcony, a bath in the bathroom (which does leak all over the floor) common for hotels in Bulgaria in my experience. Under floor heating and the rooms were hot, good for drying ski kit, but needed the window open. Comfortable beds with quilts. Overall the rooms could do with a spruce up, but worth the 30 odd quid extra for the 4*.

Food: Good compared to what I have had in previous years. Hotter than the Rila and Samokov, not as much choice, but always something decent. Food at the Bulgarian themed night on Wednesday was excellent. Hotter Coffee from the RH urn at breakfast.

Bar: Happy hour is 24 hours long!! As cheap as anywhere else so if you don't want to go out there is no problem.

Staff: Very friendly and helpful, could not ask for more.

Value for money: Excellent, I saved over £300 for 2 of us by going there instead of the Rila this year, money that can be spent eating out in the evening if the food in the hotel is not to taste. We did twice, but only for a change of scenery. Both times at the Happy Duck (down past the Samokov on the RH side of the road) outstanding hospitality, food, drinks and entertainment.

In summary: A smaller, more intimate hotel then the Rila, would always choose as long as the price differential remained. If the prices were the same, the Rila would edge it for the bigger rooms (as long as you forsake the view - and the noise and have a room at the rear of the hotel.

Room Tip: The hotel's Wifi is not much good unless you are in the lobby. We had Room 209 in the new part...

We travelled between 9 to 16 March with Balkan Holidays. This was our 5th stay at the hotel and we stayed in the 4* section and requested a room in Section A which was granted. We were very lucky and we were upgraded to a suite room on floor 5, room 501. There only seemed to be 2 suites on the floor and it didn't seem as though room 502 was occupied so we basically had the floor to ourselves.

The room was very hot and due to temperatures being above 10 degrees we slept with the balcony door open.

22 of us travelled in a group and 18 of the group had never been to Borovets and some had never skied. They all had a great time and are already talking about going back next year.

The hotel as always was clean and tidy. Our housekeeper came in every day and done a great job.

There food in the hotel is an OK standard for Bulgaria. Please note that hotel food is not always hot. We have always found this to be the case but being our 5th time to the Iglika we have never been put off by this. There is a microwave if you feel the need to use it.

The hotel bar is still 24 hours and cocktails, spirits are still BOGOF which is great value.

The ski conditions were still OK considering the time of year but this is the latest that we have ever travelled to Boro and to be honest when we go again we shall be going earlier in the season. We have trallved a few days prior one year and went on 5 March and the ski conditions were alot better but the snow fall can never be predicted. It is a lot nicer when there is snow in the trees and in the town centre and the bottome slopes not slushy.

Overall had another great stay at the Iglika and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Spent a week here in March 2013, with Balkan Holidays. As mentioned elsewhere this a good value spot for a skiing holiday in Borovets. The rooms in the 3 star section (316) are basic but clean and warm. The wet room was quirky, but not an issue. The beds were pretty ropey as were the sheets, but that was the only down side.

Food was fine, plentiful and hot enough, always something suitable. The bar area was good , with friendly service. The Wi-Fi was sometimes unreliable, but was free.

One tip, if you don't get your Ski gear from the hotel, you can still store it downstairs, if you don't mind carrying it another 100 yards. The guy in the store was very friendly and helpful, and it’s cheaper.

We went as a couple and had a pretty good week here. If you are looking for luxury, pay for it and stay somewhere else, but if a good value base for Skiing is you objective, I would happily recommend the Iglika.

For Skiing, go to the Gondola, the pistes are much more extensive up there, and higher, so the snow is usually better quality.

After booking this holiday a year in advance and after multiple changes to our booking, myself and friend visited the Iglika for a week in February. The location of the hotel was superb. Only the imposing Rila stood between you and the slopes. We travelled with Balkan Holidays and the service was excellent from start to finish.

We stayed in the 3 star part of the hotel which as many people have stated on here included a wet room rather than a conventional shower however anyone who moans about this are just being petty. Dig deeper in your wallet and pay for the 4 star rooms if this puts you off. We stayed in room 208 which was just up the stairs from the bar so very well located. We chose to use the hotels bar due to the 2 for 1 on spirit and mixers and cocktails all day every day. Football was constantly on aswel so you will never miss a game. Food was great and we found something everyday to stock up on.

On to the skiing......
Bottom runs of the mountain was slightly slippery in parts and kept you on your toes. It dumped around 10inches of snow on one of the days however and this saw out the rest of the week for decent skiing on the lower runs. However, a short walk to the gondola and this opened up a whole new world. The runs higher up were fantastic and provided a decent challenge for any level of skier. I had only had one week skiing before this trip and by the end of this week partly thanks to our brilliant Borosport instructor, Igo, we were competently skiing reds and had a few go's on blacks and even some off piste.

Overall i would recommend both the Iglika and Borovets for a cheap and very cheerful holiday....

We will be back

We booked this as recommended by a friend, through Balkan Holidays. Hotel warm, clean and food was fine. Plenty of it, never needed to heat it up good value for money really!
Our room was too hot so we just had balcony door/window open and found that fine.
The skiing instructor Rado was great very patient and understood that we all progressed at different rates (or not at all!) I gave up and went horse riding in the snowy mountains with Helen at Bulgaria on Horseback. There are many bars to choose from pretty much all ok,we did the skidoos which is an experience! people we spoke to were not impressed by the donut rides so we didn't bother.
There is bowling and massages available, quite a lot to entertain you whether you ski or not, we were with our son & his partner and they both enjoyed it.

Only moan really was Thomas Cook flight very squashed and minimal leg room but I guess this is the way things are going to stay at an affordable price.
Would book and go back to Iglika and use Balkan Holidays again, want to take grandson there to learn to ski!

Room Tip: we stayed in 306 L & 309L 4+ balcony rooms with bath & shower

Just returned from this hotel after a skiing holiday with family and friends.was a little apprehensive as booked with balkan for the first time.the hotel was clean, comfortable and warm especially after a day on the slopes. The food was plentiful tasty enough and there was always something for all tastes.the service was efficient and prompt, the 24 hour bar had a good range of drinks and the staff excellent ( and no we didn't manage an all night session). Borrovets itself is excellent for skiers of all abilities with a very good ski school, there are loads of ski hire shos for those who don't have own equipment although booking lift pass and ski hire in uk was a bargain. I would recommend this resort and especially the hotel and will be returning ASAP

Room Tip: We booked 4 star which have balconies but think all rooms are good

Was a bit dubious at frist becuase of previous reviews, however prepare to be pleasantly surprised! Our room was not in the actual hotel but in a seperate block so basically we had a whole apartment to ourselves. It was clean warm, piping hot water all the time from a very modern bathroom with shower enclosure that included glass screens. The food was a bit repeatative but there was plenty of it and the staff were like most bulgarians reserved but very respectful. We booked our ski hire via balkan ski but porbably could have got it cheaper from the Iglika. However when out on the slope we met an absolutely brilliant ski instructor called Jordan who I can't recommend highly enough his number is +359888548771. Brilliant holiday would definitely recommend this hotel as its big enough but not like the Rila where basically every meal is like a bun fight.
