Just returned home last night from the Samokov Hotel where we spent 7 nights on a ski holiday. There were 7 adults and 1 child in our party (3 rooms). We all thoroughly enjoyed our time spent in this hotel. I thought the food was lovely, ok maybe not as warm as you would have at home but i had previously read reports stating this so was expecting this when i got there. We all enjoyed our breadfasts and there was always plenty to eat.

Ours rooms were basic but clean and i thought the beds were lovely and comfortable, however the pillows werent so good, we all had great nights sleep. The rooms were also very warm. They had hairdryers in the bathroom which were not too powerful but did the job.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and would not hesitate in booking it again in the future.

hope this helps you to make your mind up !!!

Outdated furniture, lazy, sullen personal , tasteless breakfast , old and broken TV in my room (629) , noisy toilets ,uncomfortable beds... this is hotel Samokov. Looks like hostel! Definitely doesn't deserve even 2 stars. It should be noticed only good location of this hotel.

Had great week in borovets. Traveled with a group of 9 age range 11 to 53. We arrived let's evening and restaurant still open. Food generally only warm but fairly good choice and tasty. One of our party coeliac and had food prepared especially for him every night with no fuss. You can eat in the restaurant upstairs for free once in your stay, this is well worth doing as food is lovely and views great. Hotel dated but clean and warm with plenty of space. Good position opposite gondola lift. Staff were helpful and cheerful. Most of our party used the samakov ski school, their instructor was the lovely Svet. They had a great week with him, he was a patient teacher with a good sense of humour. Ask for him if you can. We all hired equipment from the samakov which was good enough for us and having the ski store under the hotel was very convenient. The slopes are good up the gondola although the area is not huge.We went sledging one night, the bars by the nursery slopes let you use their sledges for free if you buy a drink. All in all we had a fantastic holiday.

I stayed at this hotel in February half term 2013 with my daughter and son. When we arrived we were given the keys to our room promptly. Our room was clean and tidy It was not brand new but adequate for our stay. The bathroom was clean. There was slight rust in the sink but it was clean. The bath was clean but the shower did leak water onto the floor. This was not a problem though as I put a towel down and this was changed daily. when we went to breakfast there was cereal ,toast cooked breakfast fruit and juice. There was plenty, although the breakfast was warm (not really hot) The evening meal was warm there was plenty of food soup (warm again) main course Not the best quality chicken and fish but adequate. there was also salads. Deserts were mainly cake but there was fruit on offer too. There was a large reception area where you could buy drinks and sit down. The swimming pool was not warm but ok if you kept swimming. We played table tennis and the children played bowling. Overall the hotel does need updating but we really enjoyed our stay. We did not expect it to be the same standard as in England and it was not but we had. no complaints . It was very convieniant that the ski hire equipment was all on the lower ground floor. Although it was a bit caotic on the Sunday morning getting the equipment and finding the group we were in for our ski lesson we were made welcome by the ski instructor. My daughter and I had Svets as our ski instructor and he was really good. He gave us extra time when we did not start on time and when we had to wait for the ski lifts. He was excellent when I had a skiing accident and called the doctor straight away when I was on the slope. I was impressed with the staff who looked after the ski equipment as when I returned after my accident one of the staff called my rep on his mobile phone. Kiko was my sons ski instructor and he had a great time in his group. I felt we all improved our skiing technique, especially the children as they had only skied on dry slopes and my daughter did do a red run.

Just returned after a week skiing at Samokov Hotel, Initial impressions were not good, dated decor and a bland looking plate of food served up on first night, which we duly left and ventured out to find an alternative option in the many bars/restaurants just outside the hotel. Again first impressions of Borovets was what have we come to ? everyone trying to entice you into their hostelry together with a couple of seedy (erotic) bars not what we expected.
But after the initial impressions both Borovets & the hotel grew on us. It was the first time my wife had been skiing and 30+ years since I had been when at school. We picked Bulgaria mainly because of the cost of ski hire, lift pass & tuition when compared to France/Italy and would certainly recommend it as value for money.
The Hotel is dated but is located in a great position between both the lifts at the Rila and the Gondola, it has its own ski school and equipment is collected and stored in the basement. Food did improve breakfast was satisfactory with choice of hot or cold options or both, we did eat once in the restaurant in the evening which was a hot buffet style with about 4 choices all edible but the restaurant itself lacked atmosphere was more like a canteen, so for that reason we choose to eat out on every other occassion, There are various activities to do Bowling etc we did venture into the swimming pool once but considering the hotel and rooms were always very warm the swimming pool was a little cool.
Outside there are many bars/restaurants and you do not really notice the seedy ones unless you go looking for them. We ate in the Red Lion and watched "Elvis" which is worth the effort, Mama Mia for Steaks and on a lunch time find Avalanche for great Pizza's just opp the Rila button lift.
If you want a live place to drink try BJ's or if you want a quiet drink go and meet Chris aka "Mario" at White Magic, and if you want 121 skiing tuition as group tuition is not quite getting you there, speak to Mario ex Olympic Skier either he or his daughter will help you out, as they did with my wife as she was lacking confidence when being taught in the group after a couple of days and everyone learning at differenet paces. 80lev (£40) for 2 hours private tuition great value
Would certainly recc Borovets if looking to try skiing for the first time or those on a budget, spoke to many people who were returning year after year including experienced skiers as they say the variety of runs plus the apres-ski is as good as anywhere in Europe. We shall certainly be returning

Me and my boyfriend just got back from a fantastic week at borovets, we absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back next year! The hotel; our room was clean and comfortable, we had hot, running water and a balcony that had a lovely view :) the staff were friendly and helpful, we didn't have any problems with rudeness, like some people mentioned? The reception staff were polite, as where the restaurant staff and ski depot staff. I personally found the food to be ok, there was a variety, it was fresh, and it filled you up! You can't expect 5* dining when you pay for a 3* hotel! Even if you don't fancy the hotel food, there are plenty of good value restaurants and bars, literally across the road and we heard good reviews about those. The alcohol was very cheap! And decent stuff too, not just the super strong local spirits!
The skiing was fab!! Our instructor spoke brilliant English, as did most of the instructors, and he was a brilliant teacher! We went on the 24th feb for a week and the weather was very good, the sun was out on the top of the mountain for the last few days and the snow was good, however our instructor did say the best time to go would be the last week of january, as the snow is better and it's much cheaper. Our whole skiing group were English, so we made lots of friends!
So, overall we had an amazing time and we really can't wait to go back next year, the same was said by all the friends we met! I would defo recommend this resort/hotel to everyone, 10 times over! Go!! Have fun :D

Myself and two friends have just returned from a week in the Hotel Samokov and loved every minute! The decor is a bit dated and the food is a bit hit and miss, but for the price we paid we were more than happy with our stay.

The hotel is located in the centre of Borovets across the road from the gondola and close to plenty of bars and restaurants. The bottom of the slopes are a bit of a trek up a slight hill, especially when you're carrying all your ski stuff, but you get used to it.

The rooms were clean (to begin) and fresh towels were supplied every other day. As the week progressed we noticed that the maids didn't clean the floors or bathroom at all which was a bit annoying but we were only in there to get changed or sleep so didn't really bother us that much. The rooms are perfect in size for two people; it was a bit of a squeeze with three but we managed ok. The third person had to sleep on the sofabed which was likened to a metal fence laid horizontal with a very thin mattress over it. The rooms were always warm and inviting after a day in the cold and the shower was hot and powerful. It was also nice to have a hairdryer supplied that was powerful enough to dry hair unlike in many hotels I have visited. The view from our balcony (towards the gondola) was beautiful when the sun was shining and there was still snow on the trees!

The many bars in the hotel are all clean and spacious; I never once struggled to find a seat or table. The bowling alley in the hotel makes for a good night, so long as you can throw a bowling ball hard enough that it goes straight down the uneven lanes! The shooting gallery is also good for a laugh. The swimming pool was clean and not too cold. We also had a session in the jacuzzi which wasn't particularly amazing but so cheap you can hardly complain!

The majority of the staff were very kind and helpful, bar the odd one or two that were a bit miserable. We used the Samokov ski school and found all the staff there to be brilliant too.

I will almost definitely be returning to the Hotel Samokov in 2014. My only major gripe was with being unable to keep our rooms on until later in the day; we had to check out at 12pm and wait around in the hotel lobby for 5 hours and I would have much preferred to spend the time in our room but the hotel was full.
