“Excellent Resort!”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

We went as a group of three, all first time skiers. Was a little bit apprehensive about going as it was our first time but relaxed as soon as we got there. Such a friendly place! Plenty of beginners slopes for us to learn on. And the apres ski was pretty good too. Plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from. The nightlife was a bit hit and miss; some nights were dead quiet while others were brilliant. Probably done us a favour though as we were able to get a decent night kip on the quiet nights.

Tip: On days when the weather is forecast to be good the queue for the gondola can get horrendously long so make sure you get there early!

“Undiscovered gem...”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

We wanted to book a 'last-minute, cheap, short' ski break and all the usual suspects were either full or too expensive - we had to book half-term week, not because we have kids but due to work commitments...

Bulgaria came up and having never been before we weren't sure - reviews were mixed but Borovets is the 'top' ski resort in Bulgaria & luckily an acquaintance had been there previously & gave it a good review.

On arrival at Sofia we were picked up by a private minibus & driven to the resort - just an hour or so which makes a change from the usual 2-3 hour transfer in Italy or France.

Day 1 was a search for rental skis - it pays to shop around, not for the best price but for decent skis... several of the places we tried only had ropey looking skis that were clearly several seasons old & the staff were disinterested to the point of rudeness. We eventually found a pair of decent condition Volkl's in a shop on the main 'high street' 80 Leva for 4 days vs. 60 Leva quoted in other places but definitely worth the extra £10ish .

For what looks like a small resort there were plenty of runs for the 3 day passes we bought & probably enough for a full 6 - you'd be looking to 'bag' all the runs if you were there for a week.

The whole resort is mostly reds and I would say they are 'French' gradings i.e. usually a little tougher than an Italian piste of the same grade, in particular the 9km long 'Blue' Musala Pathway down from the Markudjik Ski area is a narrow, twisty path through the woods - more red than blue but really fun & pretty.

The lift system is good - reasonably quick & the runs & lifts connect well, we never found ourselves 'stuck' at a dead end and as a snowboarder I was pleased not to have to use a drag lift at any point.

Morning queues for the Yastrebetz gondola are massive - either get there really early or give yourself a break & roll up around 10am, keep an eye out for the free minibus service that'll take you to the Yastrebetz Express chairlift from the road near the gondola station - often a much quicker way to get up the mountain.

We were there over half-term & I couldn't believe how empty the slopes were - one of the biggest plus points of the trip.

There's a snowpark on the Yastrebetz side, accessed from the Yastrebetz Express lift - mostly rails & other such toys & the kickers are a bit on the big side for a beginner like me.

Runs on the Yastrebetz side are all pretty long and the slope:lift time ratio seemed better than most French and Italian resorts I've been to.

Beer was pretty cheap & as we were in a self-catering apartment we also bought food at any of the several well-stocked mini-markets.

At the weekend the locals seem to go for the half day (afternoon) lift pass so it's worth getting out early & planning a lunch/coffee stop around 12 when the lifts from the village get really busy for 30-45 minutes as they all arrive & head up the mountain.

Overall a really good resort for intermediate skiers & snowboarders, we'd definitely go back - maybe as a sneaky second trip of the season.

Final thoughts... slightly weird that there are a number of sex shops and 'erotic show' establishments throughout the village plus the whole place has a "timewarp to the 1980's" feel about it but good lifts, nice pistes and very good value.

“Great for beginners”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

Half term skiing, plenty of beginners slopes, not much for experienced skiers if you want lots of variety in your runs. Plenty of places to improve your technique though, if you don't mind passing the same tree every 45 minutes.

Queues were OK for half term week. Pistes groomed well.

So cheap it was rude not to have an extra beer whenever possible.

“Crazy Crazy Borovets!”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

Brilliant apres ski and brilliant night life. Check out Deers Bar - excellent, especially if you like karaoke! Pleanty of choice of places to eat and drink and all very friendly. Remember the guys out on the strip who are there to entice you in are working 12 hours a day in the cold. A polite thank you will stand you in good stead and if you need to know anything these chaps are very helpful.
