“Good location, safe area, good hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2010

I stayed four nights at this hotel, very central, metro station 3 blocks away, the area seems very safe, I felt safe walking back from nearby restaurants at night.
Receptionists were professional and friendly, no complaints.

Location:
My wife and I stayed in the Mercure São Paulo Jardins for several nights on a couple different occasions. It's an approximately 20-story high-rise hotel in the tony (and hilly) Jardins neighborhood of São Paulo. Three blocks to the northeast is Avenida Paulista (the Wall Street of Brazil) and four blocks to the southwest is Rua Oscar Freire (the 5th Avenue or Rodeo Drive of Brazil). Needless to say, the Jardins neighborhood is one of the most expensive parts of São Paulo. The location is good for endless shopping opportunities or business trips and has many upscale restaurants. Everything within walking distance is acutely overpriced. The Consolação Metro stop is right on Avenida Paulista, if you're interested in using public transportation to do some sightseeing in other parts of São Paulo.

Neighborhood:
Although feeling safe is highly subjective, I'll take a stab at offering my opinion. Strangely, some of the surrounding streets are clean and well maintained, while others are littered and the buildings are covered in graffiti. The well-maintained streets felt safe in the day and night and I was comfortable going out with my wife. However, I was wary to take my wife on the littered/graffitied streets, especially at night. I'm not sure why there is such a stark contrast from one street to another. Obviously just use common sense and good judgment. As an aside, litter and graffiti are commonplace in São Paulo.

Room:
The room was clean and only showed light wear. The bed was king size and the room was sizable. Internet was free, wired, reliable, and the speed was impressively fast (mid-tier broadband). The rooms had flat screen TV's and the typical standard minibar with some overpriced candies and drinks. The air conditioner was helpful to tame the summer heat and humidity. The bathrooms were immaculate (one toilet did need some minor repair work, nothing big). However, I was particularly annoyed by the ceiling-mounted shower heads, which force you to awkwardly lean backward or forward whenever you stand underneath them, just so you can continue breathing.

Staff:
The staff was very pleasant and responsive to any needs or requests. Although everyone I spoke with at the front desk was conversant in English, unfortunately, some things did get lost in translation on a few occasions (which I only realized after the fact), leading me to have to return to the front desk periodically. Even then, they remained exceptionally friendly.

Amenities:
There was a small pool, a sauna, and some fitness equipment (none of which I used), and a business center. The hotel's breakfast and is self-serve and all-you-can-eat. Breakfast options included a couple types of cereals, Brazilian pastries, fruit, sandwiches, sandwich meats, cheeses, juice, scrambled eggs, cakes, yogurt, and few other things. I believe they also serve lunch and dinner there, although it is not complimentary.

After a seven night cruise in South America, my partner and I chose to stay three extra days in Sao Paulo to explore the enormous city. I booked two nights at Mercure Sao Paulo Jardins because of reviews on Trip Advisor and am so grateful for everyone's reviews, they were very accurate. From check in to the time we left we were given the service of a hotel beyond the three-star rating they hold. Being only English speaking was a huge challenge throughout Brazil, but the staff at Mercure spoke great English and were extremely helpful at all hours of the day. Upon check in we requested a room with a view and were given the center room on the highest floor of the hotel. The room was very clean, had modern amenities: a refrigerator, safe, and even wireless internet free of charge, which we were not expecting. Also, the hotel is in a prime location and close to Oscar Freire street for excellent shopping as well as walking distance to parks, museums, and close to the subway. Great location, great service, highly recommend!

Nice, modern hotel in a good location. Front desk staff was very helpful and accommodating. The rooms were modern with an extremely comfortable bed and a large bathroom with an overhead shower.

I don't understand why this is listed under B&B/Inns on tripadvisor.

The Mercure was recommended to us by friends who live in Sao Paulo. It was a very clean and comfortable hotel, with a decent price tag. It was also well located... walking distance to all the nice shops/restaurants, as well as the Avenue Paulista.
The best thing about the hotel room was the shower, although the bathroom was a little on the small side, the shower was awesomely powerful and left you feeling relaxed, especially after a days worth of sightseeing! The gym was also useful, although the equipment could use some updating.
For people on a budget, this was a great choice!

I was set to be disappointed on walking into my room, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Modern furnishings, comfy big king size bed, a roomy bathroom with a large shower, a nice city view, great location, and free wi-fi. What more could I really ask for? The staff was very friendly and helped me a couple of times with directions and whether it would be feasible to walk or take a taxi.

There was noise at night with emergency vehicles, buses, car horns, and partyers, but if you already live in a big city this is not unusual for you.
I would not recommend eating at the restaurant for dinner. The food wasn't that great. I didn't try the breakfast though.

Avenida Paulista is a 5 to 10 minute walk up a hill on Augusta. Consolacao subway station is right on the corner once on Avenida Paulista and there is also a shopping center. MASP is also not far ..maybe a 10 to 15 minute walk up a steep-ish hill but is a really nice walk as you pass by a couple of parks. Your legs will definitely get a workout from the uphill walking.

As far as safety is concerned, Augusta has a bunch of little stores and people, most likely workers or just loiterers, tend to stand in the doorways and people watch.A bit busy during the work week with people catching buses or making their way up the hill to Avenida Paulista. Itu is a nice street with some newsstands and nice condos. Both are perfectly fine to walk during the day. At night, not sure how dodgy these streets are as I took taxis if I went out.

All in all it was very good value for the money and would stay there again in a heartbeat.
