“A good hotel at a good price”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

When the second half of a business trip was cancelled at short notice, I ended up living in the Mercure for a week with little opportunity to escape except for dinners and lunch etc. This could have been a recipe for cabin fever, but this great hotel looked after me well.

The room I had (and those of my colleagues) look just like the professional photos and were modern and clean and welcoming. Also, of the three hotels in Brazil we have stayed in on this trip, the Mercure is both the cheapest (about £80 per night) and the best.

The only criticisms I would have is that there are no face towels in the bathroom and no complimentary bottled water, and also very few English language channels on the TV, but for the price, hardly big issues.

The bed is large and comfortable.

Reception staff were friendly and spoke good English.

Overall, a good hotel.

The Mercure Jardins is good value and in a very safe neighbourhood with lots of good walk-out to upmarket shops and affordable restaurants. The hotel is a little tired around the edges, but the friendly staff go above and beyond to ensure guests are not inconvenienced by some of the maintenance problems which are quickly attended to (we had problems with plumbing, the safe and the lifts were also briefly out of action). The rooms are large, very comfortable, and quiet.

The breakfast is reasonable value, with a wide choice of food. There is also a very small swimming pool which is barely large enough to swim in (comparisons to a bath elsewhere on TA are surprisingly accurate!).

We had been warned that our personal safety might be an issue in Sao Paulo, but we felt very safe in this neighbourhood and really enjoyed our stay.

Tip: You can get the airport express (Ave Paulista hotel loop) bus from the International airport (GRU) to the Renaissance hotel just one block away from the Mercure for BRL$36.50. The hotel offers a fixed price taxi back to the airport at BRL$110 which is good value if there are 2 passengers.

The only reason I left to go to another hotel is the internet is very slow and unreliable with speeds of 15 years ago In fact the internet at the Starbucks nearby is faster, though still slow by Western standards. If they provided high speed internet and even charged for it. this is the place to stay as the price is very reasonable. But they need to provide fast internet.

Over the past several months, I have had extended stays at this hotel at least 5 times. The staff have come to know me well and have been exceptionally nice and helpful in arranging drivers for the day and resolving other small problems. My only complaint is that as such a frequent visitor, I would think I would get upgraded to better rooms due to my loyalty and huge amount of money my company has paid for my visits here. Instead, you only ever get the room you booked and there is never a suprise upgrade or any other special recognition. I think this is a general problem with the Accor hotels (vs. Starwood or Marriott, for example). All that said, this hotel is a very good choice for the business traveler, good value for the center of Sao Paulo and the rooms, while not really fancy, are well designed and always spotlessly clean. I will continue to stay here primarily b/c Starwood does not have any conveniently located properties in Sao Paulo and the staff are personally so friendly and helpful. Also, the breakfast in the restaurant is normally quite good.

Room Tip: You will want to book a superior room on an upper floor, to get a Nespresso machine, free bottled wa...

I stayed here with my nephew for a week from 2nd to 9th Sept 2013. There are many aspects of our stay that made me title my review as I did. People at the hotel are extremely friendly and willing to serve you. They know you by face and greet you each time you make a eye contact. Then, when you ask them for information or guidance, the staff just do not throw a map or a literature at you. They talk to you, understand your need and then will a variety of tips and suggestion. Sylvia at the front desk was very special. She guided us with great patience on our shopping needs. She even offered to accompany if it was in her off duty time. truly unbelievable. She also guided us on various eating options that we could easily get to. Then, when we got back, she had the time and the interest to find out how things went . It was sad that she was not on duty the night we left and I could not thank her one last time. However, as a token gesture of thanks, me and my nephew left a few traditional bangles for her. Hopefully, these small things would tell her how much we calued her help. Similarly, other hotel staff too would come out of their desk and coordinate with the drivers to explain our needs in Portuguese . The staff at the breakfast table, the housekeeping etc all made you feel wanted. That is why you feel that you are staying with a family. At the same time the service and amenities re top notch. The hotel staff would always attend to your room when you are not in - be it for the evening service or the one in the morning. The breakfast too was though a repetitive buffet, but, was well stocked. The choice of fruits, yoghurt, meats, breads, juices etc was as good as any. The hotel had a taxi stand just outside the gate and this was a very big help as the hotel staff could explain things to the driver. I must say that a lot of hotel staff who came in contact with guests had a reasonable understanding of English. This is a big plus.

The hotel is also beautifully located if you wish to venture out for a meal after your business meeting. The hotel staff would guide you. . There are some very fine Italian restaurants at walking distance (4 minutes) . They have some amazing preperations and at a good value for money price. Please do bear in mind that Brazil is a very expensive destination. Even a basic meal for two people and a drink at a non - fancy restaurant may cost Brazilian Reals 150, but, you cannot do anything about that except for budgeting these in your budget for the Brazilian trip.

There is a very very good Brazilian restaurant at about 5 minutes away from the hotel. Walk right, cross two blocks. Onthe 3rd block, turn left towards the Pualista. 75 yrds away , it would be to your rght. Amazing food, but, be there sharp at 8O clock when they open as the place packs up quickly. Again, it was the hotel staff who guided us to this place. They are always willing. A great part of our good memories of Brazil are to do with our stay at this hotel. I will always recommend this hotel t all. Next year when I return, we will again stay here and look forward to re-connecting with the friends we made here. All the best !

Really nice hotel. We stayed here in June 2013.
Very friendly staff: Silvia, who checked us in, was very helpful. She even tried to help us when we met her in the corner store the next day and were having difficulty.
She signed us up for the frequent stay program and even ordered a pizza for us when we weren't sure what to order.
Great location, a few blocks from Ave Paulista and close to shopping and restaurants. We felt very safe here even walking after dark.
Hotel room was very clean, larger room with very comfortable bed, soaps and shampoos provided. Breakfast was not provided but there is a Starbucks a block away.
Free Wifi in our room.
Would definitely stay here again.
