Owner description: Designed by prolific Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer as a monument to the sociocultural and political unity of Latin America, and punctuated by a large modernist statue of a bleeding hand, the Memorial da América Latina is one of the more underrated attractions in the city. The collection of pavilions and galleries houses paintings, sculptures and folk art, along with a rotating schedule of performances and events, like the annual São Paulo Latin American Cinema Festival. Don't miss the giant, whimsical relief map of Latin America underneath the glass floor.

Memorial da America Latina is running an exhibition called "Guerra e Paz," which explains the creation of the murals by Cândido Portinari that are on display at the United Nations in New York. The exhibition comprises two halves: the first contains sketches and paintings that were later integrated into the murals; the second is massive recreations of the murals, which -- I am guessing -- are about 30 meters tall, combined with a 10-minute video on an equally large screen. The video shows how the pieces in the first half of the exhibition are integrated into the final murals.

"Guerra e Paz" has been compared to Picasso's Guernica. After seeing this exhibition I understand why. Highly recommended.
