“Good choice for Sao Paulo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2012

First of all, you cannot compare Sao Paulo with other big cities, most of all not the hotel offering.
The service level is in general lower than what you'll be used from Asia or Europe.

Taking that into account, the Mercure at Rua Pamplona in the Jardim Paulista district is a good choice on the overpriced Sao Paulo hotel market.
From outside it looks like another of these 60s/70s tiny skyscrapers (a bit "vintage"), but the inside was recently completely renovated which is very welcome in Sao Paulo, where a lot of hotels still have the questionable look of the 80s. The Mercure looks fresh and tasteful, like a modern Mercure should look like. This is not only valid for the public areas like lobby and restaurant but also for the rooms.
There are only 2 slow elevators to access the rooms which are located on levels 1 to 16 (4 rooms per floor, privilege rooms on levels 8 and 14), on the roof you have a little gym, a tiny pool and a sundeck.
Each room is decorated in light colours with a comfortable bed, a working area, sat-tv and free wifi (which is -common in sao paulo hotels- quite slow sometimes). There is individual air condition which thankfully is relatively silent.

Breakfast selection is -also as usual in sao paulo hotels- quite simple. Don't expect a variety of cheese or fresh jam.
The restaurant is also open in the evening, during my stay there was never a lot going on there. But I tried the food for room service and it was actually quite good and not overpriced.
Service in general is a mixture of good, unattentive and untrained. But when approached, they always try to assist you as good as they can. Again, nothing new in Sao Paulo - also happens in more expensive hotels.
When it comes to languages, most of the staff only speaks portuguese. Some understand also spanish. But no reason to be afraid: When it was necessary, they always found someone who understands english.
They also offer underground parking in case you like the challenge of driving a rental car in this crazy traffic…

The location in general is quite good, you can reach a lot by walking: Ave Paulista (10-15 min), Rua Oscar Freire (10-15 min) and Ibirapuera Park (20-25 min). There is also a big Carrefour supermarket 200 m down the street. The surrounding is said to be quite safe and after my 2 weeks here I can confirm that.
Some restaurants and bars are close by.

Room Tip: Try to get us high as you can get to avoid the traffic noise!

The Mercure Sao Paulo Pamplona is a great option for a stay of multiple days. The rooms/appartments are big and have the sink seperated from the rest of the bathroom. The rooms were very clean, and the AC was quiet (a relief from some other places in Brazil). The pool on the roof is small, but does the trick. During our stay there was constantly a person at the desk that spoke English and they were very helpful (but not always too fast). I cannot comment on the breakfast, as it was not included in our room rate. However, the bakery/breakfast place on the corner of the next block toward av. Paulista is great.

The area of the hotel is great as it is close to Av. Paulista en has some good restaurants in the area. I must disagree with one of the previous reviews that said that one gets easily winded due to the hill. If you are used to walking, you will have no problem walking up this hill either. This area of Sao Paulo is comparable to San Francisco.

All in all a great stay for us. I booked this for about $100 for two persons per night (excluding breakfast) (via Orbitz) which it was definitely worth. However, they normally list the rooms for R$649 per night (about $300), which would definitely change my value assessment.

It's really a great choice in the rich area of Jardim Paulista. Close to Paulista avenue - yes, you gotta walk uphill, but it's just a couple of blocks - and the pretty trendy streets of Oscar Freire and Augusta, if you stay here you'll be able to go on foot to great restaurants and theaters.
Ok, the hotel doesn't have couches or armchairs for you to chill at the reception, but who cares? All receptionists have been very quick and polite so I could get to the room faster. And surprise: it's awesome. Huge and new bed, a great study /work area, a cute armchair for me to read my book peacefully, 32' LCD TV set with cable, a fair bathroom and a nice bathroom detached grooming area in case you're with your wife and wanna get dressed at the same time.
Free wi-fi at the room - never failed, at least on my smartphone.
In short: I really don't get it why people always complain about everything, 'cause I haven't seen any of the problems some people mentioned here.
Maybe I'm just lucky :))
It's a keeper, definitely.

The good:
This hotel is in a perfect location close to Paulista. |Even though it's a busy area, this hotel was silent. Even on a Saturday night.
There are plenty of inexpensive options to eat near by. Try the amazing bakery up the street.
The room we were in was very big. It's hard to find a king bed but this place had it and it was comfortable!
Nice big desk in the room to work at.
Very clean.
Air conditining worked well and wasn't too noisy.
Nice front desk staff.
Free internet, WiFi and wired.

The bad:
There's a pretty steep hill to walk up to get to Av. Paulista. Walk too fast and you'll get winded easily.
They took our towels every day and replaced with only one towel several times. We had to ask them to bring another up each time.
They missed our wake up call one morning.

So that's about it. Not a lot of bad. I've read some reviews about the breakfast being bad and expensive. We never tried it. The bakery up the street has seating and is cheap.

Room Tip: We were in room 113 on the back side of the building. This may be the quiet side.

The location and facilities of this hotel is good for the price. There are many restaurants in the area, and the hotel is a short, uphill walk to shopping. The service at the hotel is fair as well and could be better. The internet service is very poor, which for a business traveler these days is akin to death. The solution is the Ofner coffee shop which is a block away. Decent internet and very good coffee/espresso. Thumbs sideways for this stay. Will likely stay there again unless I can get a better deal.

It´s a kind of boutique hotel, very well located in the Jardins area, not far from Av. Paulista. Spacious rooms, but they need better maintenance, my room the TV did not work out, the blackout would not close. Bathroom good, clean room. Breakfast ok. You can stay in the same region without having to pay so expensive

Room Tip: Avoid front apartments and prefer higher floors

All in all the service and cleanliness is very good. The problem for a business traveler is the free on and off internet and the 1 mbps speed!!! Having this type of problem you are obligated to purchase the "better" service for Brl$25.00 per day. However guess what, the service is the same and you lose your money. The other problem is one of the elevators, you hit your floor button but it delivers you to another floor! So I learned that if I want to go the the 7th floor I must press the 9th floor button. Once this elevator starts to move you experience a one foot free fall that scares you the first time. The breakfast is very limited or at least it is not what I am used to in Brasil. There are a lot better hotels and less expensive in the area. My stay this time around is 13 nights, after the 2nd night I checked out and moved to another hotel in the same area saving myself 102. Reais per night and a lot better. Internet is free (54 mbps), the breakfast spread is plentiiful, very clean and the elevators work properly at the Royal Jardins Boutique Hotel on Rua Jau.
