Suplicy has always benefitted from it's location in upscale Jardins, amongst people who frequently mistake attitude for quality. São Paulo doesn't have a long-standing coffee house tradition, meaning that people didn't have much of a reference point to allow them to judge Suplicy's coffee on it's own merits. This coffee is terrible. Every espresso that I have had over too many visits (free WiFI) has been sour, thin and lacking in even a modest crema. The place itself is increasingly crowded and raggedy looking and they have now added the tacky call buttons at each table that I associate with the Fran's coffeehouse chain.
As an American who frequently visits São Paulo, I have had to resort to the large number of Starbucks that are popping up in São Paulo like boils. And I HATE Starbucks; but not as much as I hate Suplicy!
