Maybe the best spanish food in the city.
I had a paella, which was fabulous, delivered to my house two
weeks before and went there to give them
back the pan("paellera").We had squids just as appetizers
which were wonderful. My surprise was that they do not
accept visa cards even debit cards.Another curiosity
was that the waiter did not know what kind of rice is used in the paella.

Although the prices aren't cheap, the "paella" is worth it..

Don Curro is a Sao Paulo classic. The bar tenders explained that it’s been open for over 50 years and its owners are clearly trying to maintain look and feel of an establishment haunt. Their barmen wear white jackets (not uncommon in SP) and expertly service the patrons. Somehow, perhaps because of their old-school polish against the white Moorish architecture, for me the dimly lit bar area evokes Rick’s American.

It's all about seafood at Don Curro. This past trip we spent several hours in the bar area socializing with friends and made a meal out of tapas. We had plates of octopus, cured ham, muscles, fried manjubinha (a local white fish – terrific with just a squeeze of lemon) and lots and of cold beer. Beer is sold in large bottles that they keep on ice behind the bar. They refill as needed without being asked. Again the expert service. They also offer delicious complimentary snacks that I could easily fill up on; simple little crostini with slices of frittata on them. In the past we have ordered a fish that they bake in salt. Excellent.

According to locals, the founder was a minor league bull fighter and there is a diorama featuring a matador (mannequin) in full regalia with painted bullring backdrop. There are also tanks containing enormous lobsters. One of the massive tanks sits atop a massive paella pan. It’s the kind of kitsch that an old establishment can get away with, but would be tacky someplace else.

The food is wonderful at Don Curro, but it will set you back. Word has it that some Spanish restaurateurs send their cooks here to learn technique. Regardless, you will eat well if you like Spanish food. I love this place!
