“Great Location - Disappointing Room”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The views from the top of the lift at Grand Targhee Resort are worth the visit, in spite of their less-than-desirable accommodations. This past August we grabbed a little get away sans kids. Grand Targhee was close enough to avoid hours in the car but far enough away to make it seem like a real escape.

The trip up the mountain held numerous jaw dropping views. The resort itself, while not located in the most scenic location, is pleasant. However, the management seems to have lost their zeal for cleanliness.

Our check in experience was great. The receptionist was friendly, prompt, and pleasant to work with. In fact, all our contact with the staff in the Branding Iron Restaurant, at the lift, and everyone else was very friendly and helpful. However, when we checked into our room in the Sioux Lodge we were quite disappointed.

We had chosen to 'upgrade' to their 'nicer' lodge room. The room's layout was comfortable but the location was noisy. And, the room was dirty (dead bugs in the corners of the room and window sills, large stains on the carpet, and hair on the bathroom wall - to name the most obvious). In addition, the bed was so poorly made (severely wrinkled) at first glance we thought it had been slept in. Furthermore, while the sliding door had blinds, the other large window had no blinds or curtains which allowed the sunlight and moonlight to stream in unchecked - and greatly diminished our privacy.

In addition, the walk from our room to the restaurant required us to pass open and stinky garbage containers. Furthermore, right outside of the pool there were dozens of porta-potties. While I believe they were empty (and perhaps there temporarily to service a coming event), the smell (from them or the garbage or both) was quite unappetizing. There was room elsewhere on the grounds so I am not quite sure why the management chose to locate these in such a strategic area. However, it certainly detracted from the whole experience.

While I would highly recommend the lodge for the views from the top of the tram, I cannot recommend it for cleanliness. In fact, were I not on an outing in the middle of summer (with little chance of getting a room somewhere else), I would not have stayed. It was such a disappointment!

Room Tip: Rooms in the Sioux Lodge near the parking area are noisy.

Thank you for your recent visit to Grand Targhee resort and your feedback. We strive to provide exceptional service. Since your visit we have had all the carpets cleaned in the Sioux Lodge and we have met with our housekeeping team and reviewed our standards. Throughout the summer we have three different festivals requiring porta-potties. The location of the porta-potties has been brought to our attention and we are working to solve this issue for next summer. Thank you again for your comments and feedback, Grand Targhee Resort

Not worth the money! Started off on the wrong foot when I checked in and you sign the disclosure form. Don't even think of checking out late at this resort. It will cost you big time.

We were off to check out our "suite". My first clue to the condition should have been the spray painted numbers on the suite door. Nothing about this "suite" gives this impression except for clean white sheets and towels. The carpets have no padding, stains, dirt and they look like they are about five years past their prime. I was afraid to walk around without my shoes on. My cardinal rules for hotel rooms are that the rooms are clean and updated. This "suite" failed on both points. Walls are in need of painting. Bathroom paint is peeling. No bathroom fan. No sink in kitchenette. Fixtures are builder grade cheap. Bed is way too soft. Nothing looks like it's been updated or maintained in years. My in-laws stayed at condos down the hill from resort and it was a much nicer place to hang out.

Breakfast was okay. Wish they could have had different items at the buffet each day. Got tired of same old eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, and french toast for the three days we were there. How about some pancakes? No selection on cereal either. They only had Corn Flakes for the kids. We were informed that was because it was the end of season. So! Again, cleanliness was an issue. Clean your windows.

Best part of trip was location. Great views. My family loved the hiking and frisbee golf.

Thank you for your recent visit to Grand Targhee Resort and your feedback. We strive to provide exceptional service. Since your stay we have cleaned all the carpets in the Sioux Lodge and are now working on touching up the paint in the rooms. We are also in the process of ordering new room numbers for all of the doors. Your comments about the daily buffet have been brought to our Food and Beverage team and we will be evaluating our breakfast options for the future. We do not advertise our suites to have kitchenettes. We do advertise them to have a coffee maker and mini-refrigerator. We apologize if this may have misled to assume that each unit had a kitchenette. Once again we thank you for your comments and bringing them to our attention, Grand Targhee Resort.

Our family really enjoyed the location, the ski lift, hikes, and pool. We stayed in the suite that could sleep 8. This was a 2 story room. The room had a microwave, fridge, table, 2 person couch, toilet/sink, and pull out bed upstairs. Not enough seating and odd not to have a sink with the "kitchen" area. The pull out bed was very comfortable but the edges of the bed were bare metal. My husband sliced his toe pretty badly on the corner of the bed and my children banged the corner many times. We had to put pillows on the floor to protect our feet and ankles. This could be a cheap fix with a plastic corner guard.

Downstairs had two bedrooms: one with two bunk beds and the other with a queen. At night we discovered the bunk bed room had no lights due to an electrical problem in the room. A lamp was brought in.

A plus is the quiet rooms, you cannot hear the ppl in the adjacent rooms. A minus is 1 shower for a room that sleeps 8.

Breakfast came with the room. The food was good but the service was terrible. Both days we had to ask for drinks. Both days we were told excuses, "we only have 1 person working or we just had a rush." It's not to hard to know the occupancy rate and be able to staff for it. The servers were friendly when you finally were able to get service. I heard someone ask the waitress if there was an ice machine and she didn't know where it was.

I wouldn't go there again because I thought the price of the room wasn't worth it. I'd stay down the hill in Driggs, ID.

Very clean room, affordable, free hotbreakfast was excellent bonus. The grounds are beautiful in summer and the staff super friendly and accomodating- a little off the beaten path, but that is what we like in a resort. A+++

Room Tip: Teewinot is a little nicer than the Targhee

On July 24th, 2013 my wife, nephew, and I arrived late to the lodge. If I have a tip to give it's arrive while there's some sunlight left, because driving around the backroads of Alta can be very tricky. Once when we realized you had to weave around the mountain there sat Targhee Lodge. The rooms were older, but cozy. Thank goodness for the fan, because there was no air conditioner. The breakfast wasn't great...at least in my opinion. The pool was a nice surprise. Looking around there seemed to be a little for everyone...a climbing wall, ski slopes, shops, a general store, etc..The views from where this lodge sits are amazing.

-One last tip don't count on the GPS to work all the time.

Stayed one night in July 2013 in the building to the left of the registration building. These are very basic motel rooms. A bit musty, a bit outdated, the beds were not the most comfortable, but the room was clean and served its purpose. There is a full sized hair dryer in the room. No bath tub, just a stand up shower. I would lean toward 2 stars based on the room alone, but I'm pushing it up to 3 because of the prime location (at the base of the ski lift) and because the staff couldn't have been nicer. They were very welcoming.

This is another one of my fav's as far as a places to snowboard go, I have been here many times and its always a good time. This is a fairly large mountain and they get a LOT of snow every year which is what keeps me coming back. Most of the lifts are fast, they have on that's pretty slow but that doesn't bother me much. Its not all built up like it neighbor Jackson Hole, and it doesn't get nearly as crowded. I would take this place over Jackson any day, I recommend that day trip cat skiing as well, that always a good time, and on a clear day might be the most stunning landscape that you will ever ride.
