The views from the top of the lift at Grand Targhee Resort are worth the visit, in spite of their less-than-desirable accommodations. This past August we grabbed a little get away sans kids. Grand Targhee was close enough to avoid hours in the car but far enough away to make it seem like a real escape.
The trip up the mountain held numerous jaw dropping views. The resort itself, while not located in the most scenic location, is pleasant. However, the management seems to have lost their zeal for cleanliness.
Our check in experience was great. The receptionist was friendly, prompt, and pleasant to work with. In fact, all our contact with the staff in the Branding Iron Restaurant, at the lift, and everyone else was very friendly and helpful. However, when we checked into our room in the Sioux Lodge we were quite disappointed.
We had chosen to 'upgrade' to their 'nicer' lodge room. The room's layout was comfortable but the location was noisy. And, the room was dirty (dead bugs in the corners of the room and window sills, large stains on the carpet, and hair on the bathroom wall - to name the most obvious). In addition, the bed was so poorly made (severely wrinkled) at first glance we thought it had been slept in. Furthermore, while the sliding door had blinds, the other large window had no blinds or curtains which allowed the sunlight and moonlight to stream in unchecked - and greatly diminished our privacy.
In addition, the walk from our room to the restaurant required us to pass open and stinky garbage containers. Furthermore, right outside of the pool there were dozens of porta-potties. While I believe they were empty (and perhaps there temporarily to service a coming event), the smell (from them or the garbage or both) was quite unappetizing. There was room elsewhere on the grounds so I am not quite sure why the management chose to locate these in such a strategic area. However, it certainly detracted from the whole experience.
While I would highly recommend the lodge for the views from the top of the tram, I cannot recommend it for cleanliness. In fact, were I not on an outing in the middle of summer (with little chance of getting a room somewhere else), I would not have stayed. It was such a disappointment!
