“A great place for a highway break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

A nice break from being on the road all day. Hiking around the rock is a perfect opportunity for a half hour to stretch and exercise and learn a little history. Perfect place for RV'ers to park for the evening. Nice restroom facilities and quiet areas at night.

“Magnificently Preserved Americana from the Oregon Trails Times”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

This gigantic rock was one of the most significant markers on the Oregon Trail for it stands out as a monolith on the trail and it was known that you had to reach this rock by July 4th in order not to be trapped by bad weather along the trail as the days progressed. The rock contains a number of signatures of peole who stopped there back in the mid-1800's and the signage in the area explaing the significance of this monolith is excellent. There is a restroom at the site and picnic benches but no place to buy food which is a bummer. So bring sandwiches with you to the site.

“Interesting stop”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

Independence Rock was a very important landmark for those emigrants during the middle 1800's. If they arrived at the rock by July 4th, they were pretty sure they could make it all the way to the Utah Valley before the winter storms began. It was interesting to see the names carved in the rock, the earliest I found was 1849. It is amazing to me, that the carvings have lasted this long. Fun place to stop!!

“Very historical, but you have to like history to enjoy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2012

I'm from Wyoming, and have visited Independence Rock many times. It has a lot of historical significance from the standpoint of the Westward Migration, Oregon Trail and even railroad surveying.

This would be a five star experience if there was more signage showing where key names and dates are located on the rock. As it is, you have to scour and spend a lot of time on the rock to dig up the history.

Because it is in the boonies, there are no amenities other than the Rest Area.
