I just love the eclectic and artsy Santa Tereza neighborhood. This delightful B&B has the perfect ingredients: extremely helpful service from both Lance (owner) and Sergio (manager), large room (#4) with very comfortable beds, great fresh breakfast selection, free internet, etc. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is not fixated on staying close to the beaches (in which case the sister property in Ipanema is the right choice).

We stayed here recently and from the minute we checked in until we left, the staff was nothing but helpful! Sergio stayed late and checked us in, made us feel at home, and even made dinner reservations for us. I was skeptical about the room at first because it was next to the breakfast area, but we never heard any noise, and it stayed dark and cool at night. Great breakfast in the morning! I liked the fact that the staff would visit you during breakfast and help plan out your day and give you good advice. The neighborhood is quiet, historical, and has a great local/non touristy feel to it as compared to Copacabana/Inpenema. Everything you need is walking distance, and we felt very safe walking around at night. Lance was great, and helped us with everything we needed. We had a later flight out in the day, and since our room wasn't booked, they allowed us to stay until our departure time and even threw in a beautiful parting gift! He even went the extra mile to give us suggestions on places to see on our next trip to Brazil. We can't wait to come back again!

We arrived to a lovely reception from one half of the hotel's owners, Lance. Immediately felt welcome, safe and at ease. The hotel is in Santa Teresa, not the tourist end of town, but that's only to its benefit. We loved the area, especially the bars and restaurants, not to mention the scores of friendly locals helping two obvious travellers through.

As a base we used it to get the bus into town then hop on the subway to our chosen destination. Really not a problem if you're relaxed have time on your side and out to enjoy a unique city.

Casa Cool Beans is excellent all round. Very secure, the pep talk from Lance stood is in very good stead for experiencing Rio. The manager Sergeo was also fantastic, going as far as posting our postcards for us after we'd left! Simple things like providing you with a travel adapter as their sockets have been changed to the new South America standard make your stay hassle free.

Great breakfast, Lance's eggs with everything are awesome alongside the expected fruits, breads and coffee. At breakfast the staff will help you plan your day to get the most out of Rio, really helpful if you're time poor.

Rooms are spotless, fans and great bathroom. There's no safe in the room.

Places like Casa Cool Beans are the reason why complacent, tired corporate chains can surely only fall when you compare the service, humanity and warmth of an independent hotel run with passion.

We loved every minute in Casa Cool Beans! Lance and Sergio were amazing hosts and extremely helpful in the planning of our days and making sure we were on the right track. We loved being in the quaint neighborhood of Santa Teresa and having many local bakeries, restaurants and bars within walking distance was a huge plus. Casa Cool Beans itself is a wonderful, colorful, artfully decorated oasis from the bustle of Rio. The breakfasts each morning were wonderful with everything you could want and special order omelets (we loved "the Works"). We would highly recommend Casa Cool Beans in every way - by FAR our favorite place we stayed in all of Brazil on our two week adventure.

This place is rated #1 in Rio and it totally lived up to the expectations. Beautiful property and amazing service. Lance and Sergio make sure you have everything covered for your stay and go the extra mile -- every day. And yet, they strike a good balance at not being overbearing, which can happen in some B&Bs. And property is large enough that you still have your privacy, while meeting lots of interesting people ... including the owners.

Breakfast was great; shower the best we had in South America, WIFI is the most reliable we experienced, even better than a 5-star corporate hotel we stayed at in Sao Paulo.

Location was absolutely perfect for us. A very "local" and yet safe neighborhood. One of our favorite bars of all time; great restaurants. We enjoyed seeing the sites in Rio, but really loved just hanging out in Santa Theresa.

Would not hesitate to come back. Highest recommendation.

Earlier in our trip we stayed at their other location in Ipanema, but decided to stay up here for a different experience. If you have more than a few days in Rio, I highly recommended dividing your stay between the two locations as they are both awesome but different. Santa Teresa is removed from the beach area of the city, but is an awesome neighborhood to explore in its own right. Between the laid back neighborhood bar, seriously delicious restaurants, and interesting architecture sprawled out over the hillsides, you could spend days in this neighborhood alone. Plus it is walking distance to a cool park with a view and the famous tiled steps, as well as a short cab ride away from Lapa, a neighborhood known for its samba music and nightlife. The B&B itself is much bigger than the Flats, with lots of greenery and a rooftop pool. The breakfast was the best we had in Brazil, with made to order omelettes, lots of tropical fruits, fresh squeezed juices, and sweetbreads. Our room was one of the smaller ones, but it still was very spacious. It was clean and decorated stylishly with local art. Plus it had a hairdryer, the only time I got to use on in Brazil! We had trouble with the hot water in the shower, but that was the only downside to an otherwise fabulous stay. Sergio (the manager) and occasionally Lance (one of the owners) was on hand each day until 4 p.m. to help us with whatever we needed. The level of service was amazing. For example, we decided we wanted to buy a painting from a local artist that was hanging in the Flats. Lance picked the painting up for us and let us keep it at the B&B until we returned to Rio a week later, all without any commission to them. The best part is that this place is a great value compared to other options in Rio. I'd stay here again for sure.

My boyfriend and I spent 4 nights at Casa Cool Beans and we really enjoyed it. We stayed in room 7 with its own balcony which was nice and we enjoyed an evening spent drinking champagne here before dinner. We barely saw Lance or David but Sergio, the hotel manager, was very helpful.
The hotel is located very well in Santa Teresa with only a 5-10 minute walk from the centre. However, if I went back to Rio I'm not sure I would stay in Santa Teresa. It is a lovely neighbourhood but you have to get a taxi to all of the sights & beaches which is normally R$30 a ride, which quickly adds up. Think the transport links may have been better when the Bonde was running but it is currently closed for the foreseeable future. Also it is worth remembering that the hotel staff always say "just pop down to Bar Gomes and you'll easily get a taxi", this isnt the case. Santa Teresa is quiet during the day and at times we had to wait over 1/2 hour for a taxi which meant we nearly missed a couple of reservations.
Sergio was very helpful and had loads of advice for us but staff are only available from 8am until 4pm. He was great in organising hang-gliding, dinner reservations and the tram up to Christ the Redeemer.
The hotel is very funky and bright and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The breakfast was also good, with bread, fruit and cooked eggs. I would recommend Casa Cool Beans if you want to stay in Santa Teresa.
