The view from up the mountain is spectacular! The tram ride is ok as well!

Only: We are a family of four. After queueing up, buying tickets for two adults at their office, waiting, and queueing up to enter the tram, i.e. in the very last moment before the tram is leaving (your tickets are only valid for the time indicated on them), they tell us that we need to show them the passports of our two children (3 and 5 years of age). This took us by complete surprise as we never needed to bring along our passports anywhere in the last three months in South America and they did not mention it before.

So we try to explain the situation (that we don't have enough time to go back to our hotel) but they impolitely only give us the choice to buy tickets for the children as well (as we can't prove that they are small children and how old they are) or to have bought the expensive adult tickets in vain. Not much of a choice, right!?

Ok, so far our problem. We should have studied the terms & conditions of their company up front in detail!

But then a female member of the stuff, apparently in some supervising role, tells us to 'SHUT UP' and go away!
Is this their understanding of consumer service? If people dare to ask a question, why they need to pay even more money, they are told to SHUT UP and leave?
Considering that this impudent woman (see the attached picture) was acting as role model in this situation, we got a clear idea what it is that counts for the tram company: pay or f... off!
Human resources of the tram company should really do a better job of checking who they employ and raise their requirements!

Rode the cog train as part of a Gray Line tour. The train ride up the mountain was a very scenic ride through the Tijuca Forest. While there are other modes of transportation up to see Christ the Redeemer, I doubt they are as pleasant. Time well spent.

This train leaves from the bottom of the Corcovado Hill up to the statue of Christ the Redeemer. Unfortunately there’s only one train per hour and it can get fully booked very quickly. We’ve been very lucky because one employee there traded our two tickets with two for the previous train, since two people had quit...! Many thanks to this guy, since we could spend more time up there. :)

When I was going up Corcovado this looked like the best option to go there for me. There are other ways but this probably is the most relaxing one.

You buy your ticket and during the slow ride you can enjoy the view you have. You drive through the jungle and reach Corcovado after about 20 to 30 minutes.

The train itself is small and little old. But still alright. And if you reach the final destination you are able to see one of the best views in the city ;-)

The train is a great way to get to Christ the Redeemer Statue provided that you go early, to avoid the worst of the queues and the midday sun, and book ahead online to jump the queue. I unfortunately did neither, arriving at the ticket office at 10.30am and having to wait for the 11.40am train which got us up to the top in the midday sun when it was very crowded. Each train accommodates 540 passengers seated - no one stands - and during our trips up and down all the seats were taken.

The train line is 3,8 kilometres long and winds up the Corcovado Mountain (710 metres high) through the middle of the Tijuca National Park to just below the summit. The train line was inaugurated in 1884 when the trains were steam hauled. The railway was electrified in 1910 with the current Swiss-made trains coming into service in 1980.

There are a number of souvenir shops and a couple of cafes at the Cosme Velho Station, the starting point and ticket office. Sit on the right going up for the best of the views, which aren't many.

The train made a couple of stops on the way up, no one got off, waiting for the other trains to pass on two way rail line stretches. Most of the track though is one line rack railway.
